Tired hotel but ok for overnight stay

Posted 13-Jul-2014
Pros: Traditional character of the building and grounds. Pool was very good.
Cons: Maintenance needs serious attention, there is no excuse for damaged, broken fittings low standards of bathroom finishes, dodgy garden benches etc.
Location: Ok base to explore, Bury St Edmunds beautiful, v.expensive to park and old town can only park 2 hrs! Amazing market towns Long Melford, Aldeburgh : )
We stayed at the Belstead for 5 nights as a base to explore Suffolk. The staff were generally friendly and efficient & food was good. We were a little disappointed with the overall condition of the building, poor maintenance e.g. handles all loose in room, mould around bath seals, discoloured tile grout. Hotel has a certain charm but has seen better days and unfortunately now surrounded by housing estates which detracts from it's charm. Ok for overnight stay but much better hotels on the coast for longer stays.

Nice hotel, rude staff

The hotel's staff should be polite and welcome the guests with a smile, we felt they were annoyed every time we needed to ask something at reception, their attitude is not the best.

Overall, good value for money.

Posted 10-Apr-2014
Pros: Food, pool, jacuzzi, parking
Cons: General decor of rooms
Location: The rest of Suffolk is easily reached, but the hotel itself is hidden in a nondescript part of Ipswich
This hotel could do with a facelift in places, but overall its great value for your money. Its a relaxing place with good facilities, a decent breakfast and use of the pool and gym is appreciated.

Good location, Quiet, Welcoming, Excellent Food.

Pros: I liked the setting the surroundings and the location, and the decor. The history of the building, and how it has evolved over the hundreds of years.
Cons: The bathroom shower fittings and tiles need deep cleaning and tiles replaced.
Location: Good central location to Ipswich town, for leisure and business, and shopping and site-seeing local historic buildings and places of interest.
I found the hotel to be comfortable, and catered for many tastes. The room was airy, and homely. The bed was a good size, and all bed linen fresh. The facilities spa, pool were excellent. The bar was pleasant and the restaurant excellent. The food was very well prepared and the breakfast selection catered for all taste and dietary needs. The staff were attentive. However could do with brighter lighting in the bathrooms. There were a couple of things which I feel need addressing. The shower taps need clearer instruction as to which way to turn the temperature dial, which I found difficult to adjust. I also noticed that the shower temperature dial did need a deep clean, and that there were some cracked tiles. I have been a guest at the hotel before at a couple of weddings. The latter bathroom issues were noted by me then also. However I enjoyed a glass of wine in the garden. My partner and I will stay with you again. I have also attended business meetings, and I have recommended these facilities to other business colleagues.

For square pegs.

I've stayed in lots of places with my bicycle and everywhere so far has happily managed to store it somewhere safe for me including the scraggiest town centre pubs with rooms. However this hotel on a '9 acre' site had "absolutely no facility for bicycles" on the basis that, and I quote: "No guest has ever turned up on a bicycle" Obviously not keen on the fact that I didn't have an mid range German car with me. The rest was okay.

Need more than one person on the bar if people are ordering food. Very slow service. Bathroom needs updating.

Lovely old hotel

Unfortunately, I was a bit unwell when I stayed at Belstead Brook so I wasn't able to fully appreciate the hotel. The room was warm and comfortable (just what was needed). Breakfast was a bit limited compared with some buffets. Hope I get the chance to return again to check out the gym and pool.
