“A nice alternative to a city-centre hotel”

The hotel is part of the turn-of-the-20th century development that gave Stockholm Skansen (which is right next door), the countryside and folk museum in the old royal hunting park across the bay from the Old Town. It was modernised c. 1990 in a way that preserves its turn-of-the-century character, especially in the restaurant and terrace. It's a 20-30 minute walk from the city centre, but there is an excellent and frequent tram that runs until late at night, and in compensation you can walk straight from the hotel on rustic paths where the city seems miles away. (There are also ferries if you want to go straight to the Old Town.) Well worth considering as a distinctively Swedish alternative to the fairly anonymous chain hotels in the centre.

Area recommendations
Djurgarden (where the hotel is) including Vasa museum, Skansen (outdoor folk / countryside museum), Rosendals slott (royal hunting lodge in beautiful grounds), walks on the shore of the archipelago, and direct ferry to the Old Town. Well worth spending a day here.

“Nice hotel to stay with kids”

This hotel has a beautiful interior, outside restaurant and play area for kids, and is a walking distance to a whole number of Stockholm attractions for kids. It serves great breakfast too, which was included in the room price. The only bad thing was small room and no space to unpack our clothes into, so we had to live out of the suitcases. The room was very clean until the last day of our stay, for some reason that day they goofed. It was still not dirty, just not as spotless as before and also no hand towels.

“Friendliest EverStaff and Great Breakfast”

Had a very pleasant stay at the Scandic Hasselbacken in Stockholm and was very impressed with the friendly and very helpful staff for our getting around town needs. The hotel is a great location for many of the Stockholm sights that are within easy walking distance - especially if you have children to see the Wasa museum, aquarian, Rosedale, Skansen and the nearby amusement park. The only downside was that it was quite noisy (our window was open as there is no a/c) from street partying and loud music. But - our stay was overall so positive - I'd return!

“Reception staff need to be more welcoming for me to go back”

Reception not very friendly. Great location. Enjoyed skansen park which is great for the kids. Restaurant area has beautiful dining area.

Area recommendations
Skansen and grona Lund good. Can be quiet in the evening since it's slightly remote if you want to go to club or bar

“Not Impressed with Poor Reception Service”

Great location but some of the girls at reception were cold, unwelcoming and at times abit rude. Maybe it wasn't intentional but Scandic definitely need to send some of them to a 'how to make customers feel welcome' course. Stayed in lots of other hotels in stockholm where the staff have been excellent.

“Quiet and green place”

I stayed in Haselbacken for 3 nights together with my wife and 5-year old kid. Location is a key feature of this hotel. They are of course child-friendly with a Playstation and kid's playground where kids can stay while you are dining and generally very nice but all Scandinavian hotels are. However being located within a walking distance from Grona Lund, Junibacken and Skansen is a killing feature you are going to appreciate a lot if you like me are coming to Stockholm to entertain your kid. By the way don't miss the park on Djurgarden behind Skansen. It is not specifically mentioned and any guidebooks but is actually very nice with long alleys, kid's playground and a labyrinth. Despite Djurgarden being somewhat remote city center isn't actually far and can easily be reached by Stockholm's only tram line and you can take a ferry to Gamla Stan. I would certainly recommend this hotel to any families and I'm definitely going to stay with them again.

“Tired hote; in beautiful surroundings”

Hasselbacken is located in the big Rotal Park Djurgarden. It has amazing views from the garden terraces facing the water. It is perfectly located for talkig a long walk in the park. The restaurant is lovely. But the rooms are tired and in desperate need of refurbishment. The minibars are empty for some reason, and there is only a soap dispenser in the shower and one by the sink. The Scandic hotels are not priced as budget hotels so not sure why there is a lack of hospitality there. The hotel shop is well stocked with papers, books, snacks and toiletries but surprised that there is nothing in the minibar whatsoever. The staff are helpful and attentive.

Area recommendations
Gamla Stan for hotels in the Winter (as too noisy in the Summer with windows open). Mosebacke and Fjallgatan up on the hill on the south side of Slussen has breathtaking views of all the islands. Take a ferry out in the archipelago. Beautiful all year round. In Winter, go for a roundtrip/cruise as most facilities are open in the Summer only. The bigger boats do lunch cruises. Go for a boat trip on the big lake on the other side of Slussen, have lunch on the boatr and visit Drottningholm Castle. Take the bus to the Haga park (north side of town, you pass it on your way in from the Airport to town). It has a lake and the 18th century Haga Castle has recently been restored to accommodate the newly married Crown Princess Victoria and her husband. Beautiful walks. Then finish with a lunch or dinner at the picturesque 18th century inn Stallmastaregarden by the lake. Similarly, Ulriksdals Wardshus is another 18th century inn, situated in another Royal Park just outside the city centre. In the Summer, there are opera performances close by. The Inn has the most celebrated smorgasboard in Stockholm and the Christmas version is just fabulous - come hungry! Finally, don't miss out on the food halls. There are two - Hotorgshallen by Hotorget Square and Ostermalmshallen by Ostermalmstorg Square. They have all Nordic delicatessen and cosy cafes serve great fresh fish and seafood.
When to go
May - August or Dec -Feb are my favourites. May-June has the extreme daylight, Dec has great Christmas spirit, Jan-Feb you will experience a wonderful winter landscape. In particular, the archipelago is amazing both in Summer and Winter.
Dining
Swedes love to travel and Swedes love food. There are restaurants from all over teh world in Stockholm, representing both the favourite destinations for travelling Swedes (Thai, Vietnamese, Italian) and the ethnic minorities living in Stockholm (Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, Eritrean). But if you fancy something typically Swedish, you need to go elsewhere. Sweden is blessed with excellent fish, seafood and game. For nice traditional food (with a twist and maybe a bit of French influences) try Grodan (lively bar as well), Sturehof, Marten Trotzig (Old Town), Gyldene Freden (Old Town), Stallmastaregarden (Haga Park, 18th century Inn), Ulriksdals Wardshus (18th century Inn), Wardshuset Carl Michael (18th century Inn), the cafees/bistros in the food halls. The other special treat in Sweden is the "Konditori" - a traditional cafe/coffee house, where they have amazing open sandwiches, lighter lunch dishes, cakes and chocolates. There is a reason why the big coffee chains have only recently opened in Sweden.
Family-friendly activities
Visit the Astrid Lindgren world - Junibacken - at Djurgarden. A wonderful children's museum with all the character from Astrid's books, like Pippi Longstocking, Emil, Madicken. Most musuems have special areas for children, for example letting them dress up and experience being a child iin the 1800s.

“GREAT LOCATION”

Had to wait until 3pm to check in - we arrived at 7am after being up for the day before. Would have been nice to take a nap in the room. I was hoping for at least a 1pm check in. Room was very small, but clean. The location could not have been more perfect. Will likely stay there again.

“Disappointing.”

Not for people with limited tolerance for heat,as there is no AC. Breakfast buffet was great and staff was friendly and helpful. Hotel is child friendly with both in- and outdoor space for play.
