“Conditional Recommendation (Know What You're Getting)”
We recently spent 6 days at the Sugar Bay Resort. The resort itself was reasonable. The room and it's amenities were "Good", especially considering the price. Our room had an ocean view and it was very nice. When you go to the beach however, you have to go down several flights of stairs. I believe the step count was something like 75 steps. This didn't impact our visit but it certainly would be an issue for a guest that had special needs. The service was only "OK", the on site dining staff (at all locations) seemed indifferent to guests. On the 2nd to last day of our stay we were awoke at 8 am with some noise in the room above us. We thought, "Hey, this just gives us a reason to get to the beach early, no biggee." However, the day of our departure - at 8 am the room above us was literally demolished, jack-hammers, the works. Our room was visibly vibrating, you couldn't have a conversation because the noise was so loud. When I called the front desk I was sent to voicemail 3 separate times. We ultimately had to depart early because staying in the room was no longer an option. When we checked out the manager explained that the rooms above us were indeed being demolished & renovated but since we were on a last day of the stay she didn't think it would be a problem. All of the other rooms had been purposely vacated. She absorbed our miscellaneous expenses (room movies, food, etc), which came to the tune of $200. Although we enjoyed our trip, we left frustrated and disappointed.
“Not Impressed”
For the price I'm not impressed!!
“Land of Beauty”
Only bad thing I have to say is that this resort is a little far from the airport & taxi's are too expensive to go to town so once you are here, plan on staying here. They do have a few things on the resort to do but most aren't included unless you book an all inclusive stay.
“Loved the shade tree on the beach!”
The beach is great with a large shade tree! The ocean views were stunning and the water was just like in the pictures. Lots of snorkeling and the kids were loving all of it. The rooms were ok - some deferred maintenance but the property was in the process of being sold. The people very nice and always helpful.
“Great place to stay”
It was a very nice hotel with a great pool!!!!! It also has the beach right by the pool which is very convient!! As well as the taxi base right beside the hotel!!
“So much Better than Reviews Say”
After reading some of the terrible review on expedia I was really nervous about our decision to stay here. They could not have been more wrong! My room was clean and smelled like new carpet. We had pool view, so I can't speak to the ocean view rooms. The 99 steps down to the pool and beach were no big deal. If you get the all inclusive package you will want to take those stairs every day just so you don't gain weight while you are there. The pools were clean and beautiful. The beach was nicely kept. It was a small beach, but plenty of chairs were there for the guests. Some of the staff were grouchy, but 90% of them were awesome (especially Ursula, the pool bar tenders, the evening wait staff at the restaurants and the evening front desk people). The food was good, the drinks were awesome - overall we were very happy with our stay! If you are look for a 5 star resort this is not it. If you are looking for an all inclusive resort that is really fun, clean, close to shopping, and the ferry rides to St. John this is the place to stay. Happy Travels everyone!
“Honymoon at Sugar Bay”
Great Beach, Great swimming pools, Great food and the staff was wonderful very beautiful hotel....
“Will Use again.”
The special offer lured me in. We usually stay in Charlotte Amalie for two nights prior to traveling to St. John. We have begun to enjoy Red Hook and this was close to Red Hook so we thought we'd try it. The Hotel Lobby is very pretty. I didn't like that I had to wear a wrist band even though I was not on the all-inclusive program. I really don't see the point. The pool was nice, beach is okay. The stair climb from the pool up was a bit much. I don't think an elderly person could do it. The bed was a little too soft, in my opinion. The room was clean, modern, Bathroom was set up nicely with a separate sink area outside the bathroom that had toilet, sink and shower. Two people could be getting ready at same time. The bellman was very nice, and helpful.
“A total disaster”
I have traveled all over the world and stayed in many different hotels but this was by far rated one of the worst hotels that I have ever visited. The staff was not helpful, no one answered the phones, food was outrageously expensive for such a poor selection, no internet except in lobby and no tables or desk to work from, not convenient to anything on the Island and when you said something you were just ignored. If you gave me a free ticket to go back I would give it away or sell on eBay----cheap.
“AC”
AC needs to be updated to cool the room better, the temperature wasn't cool enough at times during the night. The curtains need some maintenacne work as well.
