“Excellent location!”
Great little hotel with all you need. All within walking distance, still quiet and cosy. reakfast in your room at no extra cost. The location is really excellent within walking distance from Nevski and the Isaks Cathedral. I will return!
“Great location, clean, comfy hotel, inexpensive. Don't be put off by the stairway!”
A very small hotel, but other hotels 400m away were at 3 or 4 times the price. Very clean, and the staff were excellent. Spoke better English than me (being Australian) and very friendly and keen to help. Internet wifi was free, reliable and fast, so good for Skype calls home. I had a shared bathroom, but this was never a problem - they only have a few rooms and the bathroom was cleaner than mine at home. Needs a better sign out the front as you pretty much have to find it using the street numbers. The lower floors of the building were almost derelict, so don't be put off by the stairwell. Once you get inside the hotel front door on the top floor you will be very pleased you booked. Would recommend to anyone who didn't mind walking up a few flights of stairs.
“Great Location, Great Staff, Fine Rooms and Breakfast, Creepy Entrance”
This is a less expensive hotel, but great for people who want a safe and comfortable place to sleep and don't care about amenities like pools, exercise rooms, room service, fancy lobbies, etc. It is a small hotel on the third floor of its building. NO ELEVATOR! The stairwell was pretty scary--lots of peeling paint, chipped plaster (being repaired as we left) and very dim lighting. Once into the hotel proper everything was very nice. This was our first visit to St. Petersburg, and we were there strictly as tourists. If we had the good fortune to return to St. Petersburg, we'd stay there again. The staff was extremely helpful and resourceful, with very good English. The staff was also very friendly: we were about ten minutes late meeting a tour guide at the hotel and by the time we got to the hotel the staff was serving complementary tea and biscuits to our guide and driver to make them more comfortable while they waited! I was very impressed. The wireless internet worked well and the breakfasts were typical Eastern European fare, yoghurt, luncheon meats, bread, cold cereal, etc., served in the guest rooms. The location is about half a block from St. Isaac's Square, and about a ten minute walk (one route is along a beautiful canal) from the Nevsky Prospekt. shopping district or the Neva River. From Northern Lights it's a bit of a hike to the nearest subway station, but it shouldn't be a problem for anyone who can negotiate the three flights of stairs with suitcases.
“Warm welcome, city centre location and very good value”
Firstly, it is important to say that this is not a hotel in the traditional sense; I would suggest it is more of a series of rooms with a small reception area. However, we did not object to this, as not having a bar or restaurant in the hotel, only encourages one to see the lovely city centre, which is only 10 mins walk away. The staff were not simply polite, but were extremely friendly and welcoming and all spoke very good or fluent English. We took a suite, which was clean, nicely furnished and large. The only point is that the shower was not always hot.
“Good for the price”
Very basic room, good location, helpful staff.
“See St Petersburg from Northern Lights”
This small but perfectly formed hotel is one of the best we have ever stayed in. It does not have the unnecessary facilities of a large establishment but delivers on service, cleanliness and room comfort. We arrived straight from the overnight train from Moscow and were welcomed like members of the family. On our departure day we were able to leave our bags until late so we could have a good meal at a nearby Georgian restaurant and then catch the overnight train back to Moscow. The location is great, just around the corner from St Isaac's Cathedral and other must see locations. I would recommend this hotel without hesitation as indeed it was recommended to us. When we can, we will return to The Northern Lights and to a very warm welcome.
“convinient!”
This mini-hotel is perfectly located for exploring the centre of the city. The staff was helpful and nice. Breakfast was served in the rooms, due to no common hall or foye. The room was clean and decent size. The bathroom was very spacious. You can also book a driver to pick up from/to the airport. Overall, I enjoyed staying in the hotel and would recommend it to those not seeking for a grand and expensive hotel.
“Very good value for money”
A small private hotel located in the hart of historic city. Very friendly staff.
“Pleasant and great location”
Once you climb the rather dingy stairwell to the third floor location, a pleasant surprise awaits at the Northern Lights Hotel: a light, bright, comfortable room comparable to a quality European pension. Northern Lights caters to an English-speaking clientele, with a very helpful young staff. The included breakfast is generous and tasty. It is only a 5 minute walk from St. Isaacs. We would gladly go back.
“This is NOT an Hotel”
The first thing folk need to be clear about is that Northern Lights is a B&B; it certainly cannot be described as an hotel. Had I not had a transfer service from the railway station I would have had difficulty finding the establishment as there is little by the way of signage outside. I was well aware from the time of booking that there was no lifts and that the accommodation was three floors up but even that little knowledge did not quite prepare me for what I found when I left the street. The dreary dank and poorly lit stairwell is a definite leftover from a previous era. I assume the stairwell is not owned by Northern Lights but they need to invest in this area to make the accommodation more welcoming. Certainly some work and lighting between floors 2 and 3 would mitigate the negative overtones of the stairs. The accommodation is fine and having free internet was a real bonus. Breakfast was adequate if meagre but the staff were pleasant and helpful. Having said all that it is a fantastic location and will be suitable for fit tourists provided your stay is for no longer than a few nights.
