“Hidden value - highly recommended”

We stayed at Villa Marjela for 3 nights in May 2010. It is a small hotel in the suburbs between the Hayduk Stadium and the old town - which is a pleasant 10 min walk away. The rooms were a good size, clean and comfortable even though furnishings are slightly spartan. The breakfast was continental style - meats, cheese, boiled egg and bread - but all nice and fresh - and plenty of it. The hotel has really friendly & helpful staff . They provided directions etc and also pointed out good local restaurants away from the tourist areas that were mainly frequented by locals. (We loved the seafood restaurant on the marina - a very pleasant 5 - 10 mins walk from the hotel - where you can watch the "catch of the day" and "daily specials" being delivered at the quay side) It can be difficult to find the first time - particularly if arriving by car - so email when booking and get directions. Even the sat nav only took us within 200m and we could not see it. But the friendly locals pointed it out to us - without laughing!! The hotel is set amongst the old communist style apartment towers so the neighborhood does not look all that flash - however, everyone we met in the area were welcoming, friendly and helpful even at the local shop. The hotel can be hard to find if arriving by car - so email for clear directions - even the sat nav only got us within 200 metres and we had to ask locals where it was hidden. A great place to stay in Split, very good value & we would stay there again!

Area recommendations
Split is really worth some time exploring. A fascinating place - the old palace - plenty of roman ruins and history. Also a good setting off point to the islands.
