“Spacious Rooms”

A lot of hotels in Italy are small and the rooms in this hotel are large. The bathroom was a good size. The walls in this hotel are very thin and the floors are tile so you can hear everything going on above, below and out in the hallway. The roller wheels on the floors can be especially loud early in the morning when some folks need to leave for a cruise ship. The hotel caters to an older set but has a great location.

“Great choice”

Couldn't have been happier. Stayed six nights. Spacious room, beautiful tile floor, balcony, always clean. Free breakfast was a treat. Delicious breads, pastries, plus homemade yogurt, hot buffet. Every member of the staff was friendly and helpful. Easy walking distance to train/ bus station, main plaza, docks, many restaurants.

“Highly Impressed”

An impressively run hotel. Excellent staff everyone of them, eager to please and very sincere with first class service. Nothing too much trouble. Very conveniently situated near the centre of Sorrento with many bars and restaurants close by. Stayed 16 nights and enjoyed every one. Would highly recommend.

Getting around

Plenty of public transport by bus and boat. Roads good but can be tight with many tight bends on coast roads, made more dangerous by scooter and bike riders overtaking without care.

“Sunny sorrento”

Exceptional view from our room on the 4th floor of the bay of Naples and Vesuvius. Staff were helpful and very friendly. The rooms and grounds of hotel were exceptional. Didn't stay in hotel for the evening entertainment as was so close to town centre, although town centre very expensive. Sister hotel the royal is also very nice and made use of the bathing platform and swimming in the sea. Roof top pool is nice but water is colder than the sea.

Area recommendations

The best area was the back streets south of the square. Lots of shops and small restaurants. The food is so tasty and fresh

“A great stay in busy Sorrento”

Grande Hotel de la ville is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in.I could not fault it..If anything at all slightly too far from Sorrento town.(elderly mother in our party)but otherwise fantastic.Pool area overlooking Sorrento bay and Mt Vesuvius,great food,friendly staff,comfortable,clean well appointed rooms.It is also handy for trains and buses to surrounding areas.I will come back to sorrento and stay at this hotel.

“Excellent hotel with friendly staff”

Looks can be deceptive and from the outside Grand Hotel De La Ville looks a bit less than grand! Inside you will find all you could need for a pleasant stay in this beautiful part of Italy.Staff are very friendly, especially the waiters. Restaurant manager Enzo is a star. Location is really good too being just a five minute stroll from the bustling centre of Sorrento and close to the Circumvesuviana railway. We ate out most nights, but the meals we did have were very good, and the lunchtime pasta is very good value. Rooms are perhaps a little dated, but are clean and comfortable. Worth paying for the sea view, as you get to look out over the bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the background.

Area recommendations

On tha Amalfi coast I would definatelly recommend Sorrento. Lots to do within easy travelling distance, Pompei, Herculanium, Vesuvius are'must do's' and there are plenty of boat trips from the harbour (Capri, Naples, Amalfi etc) Sorrento has loads of restaurants serving good local food- pasta, seafood, etc and has many side streets to explore. It also feels very safe, but do watch out for the traffic, which can be very busy at times.

“Exceptional service at Grand Hotel de la Ville”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel de la Ville. The customer service was exceptional in every respect - the reception desk, waiters, bar staff, pool staff, porters ... The rooftop pool has stunning views of Vesuvius and the bay of Naples - we were always able to find a sunbed too. The pool itself is big enough to cool you down (necessary in the August heat!) but not for swimming. The garden pool was bigger but we left that to the families with their lilos and beach balls. Lunch menu was varied and tasty - not the cheapest but you are paying for the convenience. Eating underneath the shady orange trees was very relaxing. We only ate in the hotel restaurant one evening - but again the service was great and the homemade ravioli was delicious. The other food was good put probably not up to the standard of local restaurants - but comparatively very good value. (Try Carusos, Il Buco, Photo, Meating Place) Breakfast was OK but we have had better - the homemade marmalade is worth a try. The location was fab - an easy stroll through the nearby lemon groves to the main drag Corsa Italia, or walk along the quieter Via Coreale which ends at the popular Piazza Tasso. The train station is very convenient and the port isn't too far away. The rooms were spotlessly clean and well furnished and decorated - absolutely fine for a relax before heading out. We had a Classic room - yes it had a garden view but also faced the flats opposite. No noise but no view!

“Not worth the money!”

Not worth the money. Disappointed with quality. Encountered problems with air conditioning and refrigerator which were later sorted out but problem with ANTS was surprising for a hotel of this caliber and price. Rooms on top floor have great view but beware of ants!!!! Attitude of one of the hotel personnel was bordering on rude and had to ask for manager (got assistant manager) to get proper service. Have vacationed in Italy numerous times and have had better breakfast (don't order omelette - 6.50 Euros and eggs were runny, charged on bill though it could not be eaten!) and service elsewhere.....overall disappointed and will not return.
