“Excellent little Inn on Exmoor”

The Royal Oak is located in a small village in the middle of Exmoor, yet it is convenient to reach all areas of interest & has some beautiful walks right on the doorstep. The bars and restaurant reflect its 300 year history and vary from rustic public bar, to comfortable country pub lounge, to delightful restaurant room where you also take breakfast. The hotel is successfully managed by Jeanette who skilfully ensures all are welcome and comfortable throughout their stay. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she was always ready with a smile. The rooms are clean, comfortable and very well maintained. When I noticed the crooked doors I did think that noise privacy might be a problem but this was certainly not the case. Our room was above the restaurant/function room and was quiet during our stay. The radiator was constantly on but open windows made this more comfortable and the surrounding area is quiet. A good choice of breakfast & always cooked perfectly. Plenty of tea & coffee. Dinner varied from excellently cooked venison on our first night to average quality and varying portions on our remaining nights when there were larger parties of diners. The bar serves Exmoor Ale and the usual lagers etc plus a selection of wines. The Bar Manager was professional, but it was definitely a challenge to get him to offer a welcome or take our order. Overall a lovely Inn in the middle of Exmoor, with a warm welcome from Jeanette & beautiful surroundings.

“Staff are fantastic - lovely old pub”

The Royal oak is a lovely old pub and restaurant with very friendly staff. The room was quite small but nicely decorated with a lovely bathroom. A couple of little errors like unclean tea pot and biscuits that were open that could do with attention, but apart form that, it was lovely. They reserve a table for you in the dining room and the food was really great and very reasonable. Very large portions! I would recommend asking for a table in the pub though as it has far more atmosphere. The restaurant is silent! Breakfast was very nice. The staff are the real stars of the show here though.
