“SOFIA 2011”

Great Staff , Great Location , only down side tv connection poor and poor wi-fi connection in rooms , rugs warn & table cloths also warn in restauarnt with poor breakfast . However this is my 5th year in different rooms and i am stii very satisfied and will return again next year.

“Nest on Pirotska Street”

As before during my five or six earlier visits, the staff and service were friendly and prompt. Location is superb in the old Jewish neighborhood but now home to a large mosque, a new Catholic Church a Romanian church, an othodox church and a huge Temple. On a pesdestrian mall the hotel is quiet and very Balkan in character.. At their price, Sveta Sofia is a good value.

Area recommendations
I would recommend the neighborhood around Pirotska street because it is truly a Balkan experience rather than Miami Beach scene at the first class hotels. As a pedestrian only street it is quiet and relaxed. Most importantly is is only a couple of blocks by foot from the main square with the Zym store and office building, the Sheraton and the Spaghetteria restaurant. and Vitoshia the main shopping drag. If you are interested in a real Bulgarian experience, this is the neighborhood

“Not 4 star”

The Sveta Sofia in Sofia, Bulgaria, is centrally located, making it very easy to visit themain sights in central Sofia. However, beware, it is nowhere near four star standard more like three. There was no tea or coffee making facility and the toiletries were very basic and sparse. The decor is faded Soviet era and very dated. The fridge in Room 101 (perhaps a warning there!) was extremely noisy. I reported it but nothing was done, and in the end I had to switch it off.

Area recommendations
Sofia has a way to go before it becomes tourist friendly. It is easy to walk around the centre as it is a small city, but taking excursions out of the city is very difficult, and ver expensive if you are travelling solo. There are no coach excursions available, at least not in the Autumn, and the only way is to share a hire car. Using public transport is made very difficul simply because all the signs are in Cyrillic script (although most of the main street signs are in Latin script also). So you can't make out where a bus is headed, and not many passersby can speak English (and why should they). They are expanding the metro system so there are major roadworks in the centre. It istill a nice place to visit, but easy at present. I hope it changes, but I suspect it will take quite a while.

“Good budget hotel in close proximity of tourist and commercial locations Central.”

The map which I selected from mislead me but it was still within 5 Mins walk from the centre. It was good value and the food was good. I was happy to have selected this Hotel. I have stayed previously in other Hotels in the area and this was the best for me. The staff spoke English and were well informed on the area therefore ready and able to help. The Hotel is an older building with a dated layout and decor but value for money it was excellent.

Area recommendations
For me the ideal location would have been on the opposite side of the centre. Vitoshia Sreet was more open and upmarket. Anywhere between The Stadium and the Old City Centre. There is currently lots of infrastructural projects under way so many areas are either closed off or limited access. This appears to be a medium term problem but will be an asset later.
When to go
I understand May is the best month for visiting. I had a gret experience 19th to 14th September. Sunshine, Blue Sky and 20 degrees. Definately not in a rainey or snow time as the roads, footpaths etc are dangerous and generally not in good condition.

“Good value, great value, real Bulgarian flavor”

Excellent location in old Jewish neighborhood with churches and temples for all principal religions including Romanian orthodox; quiet pedestrian street. Very good value with expedia discount; nice ladies at reception; Near subway and Sheraton as well as government buildings; gypsy market nearby; It is does not have the glitz of the Sheraton but it is a fraction of the price. with some rooms having balconies overlooking very Balkan pedestrian street; For an intrepid traveller it is very satsfactory.

Area recommendations
The immediate neighborhood of the hotel on Pirotska Street for real Balkanophiles. Nearby Vitoshka Street for shoppers and the cultural center for those who have nostagia for architectural dynosaurs from the era of Stalinist gothic.

Good value for the traveller who seeks a genuine Bulgarian experience.

“good base to see a beautifull city”

good hotel as a base just 2 mins from the main attractions in the city, very very freindly staff and very helpfull, the breakfast wasn't up to much but thats just the bulgarian way i think. the rooms were pretty basic (no kettle) and a little old but comfy enough with a mini bar fridge and cleaned everyday. also try and get your hands on "the insiders guide to sofia" which should be on the hotel receipton as its very in depth and help us a lot with addresses of restaraunts and attractions. and remember relax and go with the flow its a not as bad as many books say!! and the flea market near the raddison & alex nevadsky church is an awsome experiance and has some very interesting people (who speak english) just be carfull of cheap inports for tourist!

Traveller's tip
if you have young kids (still on bottles) then take a travel kettle as it was worth its weight in gold and made life very manageble with our 13 month old (joe) also the pavements in Sofia and very rough and not up to british standards so bring a light buggy as there are plenty of steps and no changing facilatys anywere so be prepard to change nappies comando style!

“substantial and clean”

Hotel was fairly central for the sites and shops. Breakfast was sufficient . Rooms very clean but fairly basic. I would not say it was a four star hotel more like a three star.

“Not a 4 Star Hotel”

I booked this hotel for the Gym and it was closed as was the sauna the 2 nights I stayed.Phone did not work in room and the breakfast was basic and not very good at all. The hotel Location is good centre to all sights. but that was all that was good.The bar in the hotel closed at 9pm. Rooms are small and is in need of face lift (its old and dirty looking).

Traveller's tip
Dont walk around at night on your own in sofia. watch the taxi drivers always want to rip you off. Ok cabs are the cheap taxi firm only about 10 Lev from airport to Hotel. Dont get sightseeing bus tour of city you can walk to all stops in a day and it may turn up or again it might not every hour.

“Charming City with Delicious Food”

The location is fantastic for walking to the historic and cultural sites - cathedrals, museums, churches. The hotel staff was pleasant, friendly, and knowledgable. However, my air conditioner was broken three of the four nights I stayed there; my requests for repairs were not met.

Traveller's tip
There's a fantastic, authentic Bulgarian restaurants just down the street - "Bulgarska Zavera". I returned night after night to try something different on the menu. The manager even gave me a few recipes.
