“Hotel Re”

New hotel, rooms clean and staff friendly and helpful. Location ok - not much in the immediate vicinity but less than a 10min walk to Clarke Quay. $20 breakfast was overpriced for what it is - v. average buffet fare. If you have time, take a walk to the river and find a cafe. Biggest plus compared to many Singapore hotels is the free wifi throughout.

“Hotel on the Hill”

A nice hotel but being located on a steep hill made access difficult, especially after a day of touring. The rooms were nicely finished, but tiny.

“Simple, but clean room and helpfull staff.”

This hotel used to be a dormitory so the rooms are rather small. The shower is great. They provide bottles of water, soda pop and snacks free of charge + a refrigerator & a safe. It's about a 10 minute walk from the MRT station that requires a hike up a small hill. I have no complaints and would stay there again.

Getting around
Buy a "tourist pass" at the airport when you arrive. You'll have unlimited travel on the MRT trains and busses for only $8 Singapore ($6.80 US) a day. The MRT trains are very clean, easy to use and safe.
What to pack
Don't forget a good umbrella. We ended up buying a couple of cheap-o unbrellas that really weren't up to the task.

“Average tourist hotel, despite the decor”

Although near to the quays and Chinatown, you have a hot 15 minute walk to/from the Outram MRT or from Clarke Quay across busy roads. If with luggage, arrive by taxi or shuttle bus. Despite the garish decor and the misleading shots on the hotel website, the standard rooms are small rectangular boxes, but clean and well fitted, comfortable enough and fairly quiet (no traffic noise, but some from nearby rooms and the corridor). Breakfast (at 21$ if not included) is not so good value, some Western and Asian hot choices from the buffet, fruit and cereal, but plastic bread and poor coffee. Staff helpful, but beware the 50$ a day authorisation taken from your credit card on arrival ('for expenses')

Area recommendations
Clarke Quay and Boat Quay have loads of restaurants of all styles but expensive, particularly for alcohol. You pay for the great evening atmosphere. Brewerkz does great microbrew beers, but at an extortionate 15-17$ per pint in the evenings, less than half that at lunchtime. Try the Lau Pau Sat market - great hawker stalls, cheap beer, and satay stalls nearby at the weekend.
Getting around
An EZ-link card is essential if you are in Singapore for a few days and plan to travel much by MRT or bus - it saves a lot of hassle and you get a discount.

“lq23”

If you like hiking about towns Hotel Re is a great deal and hard to beat at Expedia prices--you're within walking distance of China Town, Downtown, Robertson Quay and two and half subway stations. And there's always the beautiful Pearl Hill National Park and its unusual views of the surrounding city.

“Good price, good location.”

Hotel Re is situated quite close to Chinatown and the MRT, subway system. A short walk down the hill, go right when coming out of the hotel then thru a little side gate. The rooms were very clean and serviced daily. Beds were very comfortable. Good price considering the extras available in each room, eg safe, large LCD TV. Hotel staff very keen to help you and happy hour, about 4 hours not 1 is a good extra. Hotel is also close to the quays. Say a 20min walk or a 5 min taxi ride, cost very minimal. Catch train to the zoo or to the harbour or Sentosa Island. Hotel concierge is very helpful as well. All in all I had a good week at Hotel Re.

“Great value, will return again!”

The building is a former school dormitory which has been stylishly renovated. The rooms are fairly large even by US standards. The internet is wireless which is free but of average speed. The building sits atop a hill by a large public park which means it is in a quite location and has great views of the city. "4/5" for location because it is a 10 minute walk up the hill through the park from the Outram Park MRT station and shops nearby.

“Cheap Option for Budget Minded - Keep Your Expectations Low and You'll Be Fine”

Hotel is a little difficult to find, tucked off the road up a hill. It's much more basic than I thought it would be, more like the transit hotel in Chaingi. Price was cheap so you get what you pay for, but don't expect you're getting a "bargain". If you're staying 1-2 nights and just need a place to crash this will work. Hotel was pretty clean, but it looked like they took an old hotel and repainted it and put some really flashy - pink, purple, orange designs everywhere. The shower was covered in glittery purple and pink tiles floor to ceiling and there was a large purple silhouette of Marilyn Monroe behind the bed if that says anything...
