“Average, good enough though.”

The service was pretty average, staff weren't that friendly. Condition of hotel was adequate and the location was pretty good. Except theres a really ratty street right next to the hotel which wasn't great for atmosphere, but overall it was fine.

“Great Place”

Have stayed in a quite a few hotels in Shanghai, and this might be my favorite so far. Great central location, very large rooms with good views and tastefully decorated. Nice Chinese flair, knew I was in China! Would recommend to anyone.

“Great Value, Central Location”

Hotel is situated in a central (5-10 minutes walking distance to the Bund and the East Nanjing Pedestrian Mall), and safe location. It is also 5 minutes from the metro and hence it is easy to get around by metro (in addition to taxi options). I actually liked the neighborhood around the hotel and thought that it added a nice local flavor (real Shanghai), and great options for meals near the hotel. In fact, I liked the locality around the hotel in comparison to E Nanjing Rd pedestrian mall as it was way too touristy and tacky (in my opinion). The Bund was spectacular and the city wonderful.

“Central Hotel with very clean, spacious and well appointed rooms and excellent breakfast”

We booked the Business Deluxe for a very reasonable rate. We had an amazing view. The bed was huge and bedroom was in a separated off area to the living/office space. Bathroom contained separate shower and corner bath. The breakfast had a wide selection of choices which we had prebooked as part of deal and an even better view of city as restaurant is on 31st floor . Not many hotels in Shanghai seem to offer breakfast included deals so I would strongly recommend this hotel for value and 4/5 star accommodation. There was a working computer in room with completely free internet access. However hotel demanded a large deposit which i was not prepared for. They did accept a credit card deposit which was refunded at end of stay but this could prove expensive depending on your credit card company and its charges.

Area recommendations
The HuangPu area is very centrally situated and very safe. Walking distance to Nanjing Road, Peoples Square and The Bund.
Getting there
Only 10 minute walk (if that) to Nanjing Road East metro station. You can either get from Airport direct on train to Nanjing Road East for 7 yuan but avoid rush hours. Alternatively its quicker to take Maglev to Longyang Road metro Station for 50 yuan then metro is 4 yuan from Longyang Road to Nanjing Road. (If you have suitcases the Maglev is OK in rush hour but then maybe take the taxi instead of the metro) Ten yuan approx £1. When buying tickets on metro there is usually one machine which has instructions in English.
Getting around
Buses you can pay on entry. The buses are going over to environmentally friendly electric battery and are very frequent. They also operate an oyster card system if you are there any length of time. Trains frequent and cheap, usually someone about to ask if you cant understand the ticket machines and if you know how to use tube in UK you should have no problem. Maglev is a must.
Must see
The Bund (or Waitan) is a must see for all visitors. Nanjing Road , if you like shopping - think of Oxford Street in the January Sales all year round! . Peoples Square up above and below a huge underground Mall which has a typical 1930s Shanghai Streets and Shops mock up. Also YuYuan Gardens consists of the 9 corner bridge with Palace and Gardens inside, many souvenir and tourist shops good for haggling. Maglev high speed train from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road metro station.The Expo Commemoration Exhibition was very fascinating and very cheap and running till well into 2012.
Shopping
If you like shopping this is the place for you but you will never have enough time to see all there is to see.
Dining
Our hotel (Salvo) included free breakfast when we booked. It is very good with a large selection of choices. Not many shanghai hotels include breakfast so this is a really good hotel to choose.
Other
Public toilets getting better but if you're not sure use a MacDonalds or a restaurant's toilets. Airport toilets very good.

“Return customer and not disappointed to stay again!”

The Salvo Hotel Shanghai is an excellent value comparable to the 5 star higher priced hotels in the same area. Great location just a short walk to the Bund, Nanjing Road shopping, People's Square and the Metro. My executive suite had a fantastic view of the river and Pudong with plenty of room, a comfortable bed and large clean bathroom. The staff all speak very good English and are attentive to guest needs. Western breakfast a big plus too. Will definitely stay at the Salvo again!

“Beware the Bund View promise.”

We booked many months in advance. The room was described as Business Suite Bund View. I complained that our room was too low to view the Bund (which is a nearby river), but there was apparently nothing that could be done. Apart from that the hotel was fine, nice location, nice price, not too shabby.

“4 stars!? Not a chance!”

First off, internet is too slow...hardly useable. The restaurant for breakfast never has enough seating room, forcing you to sit at the same table with strangers. If you get up for seconds, someone will be sitting there when you get back!? The "do not disturb" sign on your door apparently means "please do come on in". Overall, good location...you can walk to Nanjing road, Yuan garden and the subway system, among other places, but the hotel was a let down. Would not stay there again.

“Great view from our window!”

We stayed on the 20th floor in an executive room and we dont regret booking this hotel. Although our aircon broke down and flooded the room, we were moved next door with equally good views. I was surprised one evening to be approached by a man asking me if I wanted to see some girls.....I refused but he was persistent. I held my ground and said NO!!!! he got the drift. Nanjing road was a disappointment...highly over rated and expensive so we went to Qi Pu market where we had a great time shopping.

Area recommendations
Huangpu is where Salvo is located and I was extremely happy with this location.
Shopping
QiPu costume market is the place to go for fashion. Very crowded but what a place to go and bargain! We finally had all the shopping done in 2 days in this place. Just take a cab which cost 14RMB from Salvo Hotel or walk for 30 minutes and you are there.
