“excellent service and location”
Le Meridien Royal is an excellent hotel. Service is high quality, rooms very comfortable. It seems the entire staff speaks English (no chance to practice your Mandarin). Adjacent to the Nanjiang Lu (road) pedestrian walkway, it's location is great. Short walks to People's Park, Shanghai Museum and Metro station. Twelve minutes to the Bund. Recommended.
“satisfactory - thats all”
This is a 4 star hotel but 5 star in Shanghai standard. Difficult to communicate to staff in English. Should be better in a 5 star hotel. Staff show an attitude to Westerners. Hotel design is good for single/couples but not mixed guests due to see-thru bathroom ( no seperate room ) Inconvenient elevators - 2 stage to rooms. lift to Lobby, then another lift to room. Childrens room looked good. quality carpet and marble. modern design. Position is good to Peoples Park but 20 minute walk to Bund. Dining areas excellent. Previously stayed Le Royal Meridian in Abu Dhabi - much better.
“Very Good”
The room was very comfortable. The staff is very friendly and the food was very good as well.
“Probably Won't Return”
The hotel is clean, pretty, and upscale, but is very poorly planned from a space flow standpoint. The lobby floor is a confused maze of restaurants, elevator banks, and hallways. After being here for 3 days, I am still baffled by it and the confusion extends to the room levels, the layout of which are, well, just odd. Further, I understand the security aspect of having to enter my room key for the elevators to move, but they don't work and I've been stuck in there several times. And what's with the rain forest sound effects? It's nothing more than annoying noise that adds to the overall feeling of chaos that ones gets in this hotel. The room service menu is disguised as a "things to do" newsletter and I had to call the front desk to find it after searching the room for 15 minutes (It's not chic; it's stupid and not very user friendly.) The breakfast buffet is one of the weakest I've experienced in China, which is surprising given the scale and cost of this hotel. I've spent my free day today visiting other hotels in Shanghai so that I can make a better choice on my next visit (I come here about twice a year on business.) The service was fine and the staff friendly, but I doubt I'll return.
“Four-Peat return visitor”
This was my fourth trip back to this hotel and the service and accommodation just kept getting better and better. This is always my hotel of choice in Shanghai. Also, the location is flawless! Right above a central subway interchange at People's Square.
“Modern clean hotel in great location”
Wonderful modern hotel, clean and well situated for the sights, staff very helpful for a non Chinese speaking. Breakfast buffet was amazing and expensive. The room was quite and comfortable, large soaking tub in glass wall bathroom and unusual rain shower. I would recommend this hotel.
“Very impressed!”
Love the location of the hotel, very convenient to the shhopping area on Nanjing Rd Pedestrian mall. I had stayed there for a week to visit the World expo. I had eaten at the Ai Mei (Cantonese restaurant) twice and was impressed with food, quality, service and surroundings. I also ate at the Bistro once. Food was fine, not as good as the Chinese restaurant. I also had afternoon tea there as well. The chocolate cake was excellent. Most staff spoke English and was very helpful. Particular mention would be Max at the Concierge, very helpful and recommended us to go to a nearby Mixed Chinese cuisine restaurant in an old Art Deco building, Xian Chong Fang, which was excellent both in food and service. I would stay in this hotel again as it is close to many landmarks, the shopping district and many wonderful restaurants and eateries.
“Mostly great”
This hotel is in a great spot, close to the Shanghai Museum and People's Park, and the subway (although I didn't use that as taxis are so cheap). Breakfast was not included, as it rarely seems to be when you book on expedia, and we ate there once- 1000rmb for 3 adults and 2 kids. That's REALLY expensive for those not up on the conversion. The other days, we just went to the Starbucks around the corner - and that tells you how expensive the breakfast is if Starbucks looks cheap. Sometimes it's nice to splurge but this wasn't really worth it, for some scrambled eggs and blah coffee. The only other quibble I had was transportation. A car to meet us at the airport and were quoted 750yuan for the ride. Steep, but ok, - but then they said that as we were 4 people we wouldn't fit in the Audi A6 and would need to take a van - for 1000yuan. We used to have an A6 and 4 people plus driver fit most comfortably, but they refused to budge. Nuts to that. So we took the Maglev train to Longyang Rd Station and then a taxi, for a fraction of the price and time, and strangely enough we all fit handily into the tiny taxi, luggage and all... So take the train! It also goes 450km/hr which greatly pleases the younger set. The bar on the 66th floor is nice and has great views, but only from the smoking area, which is a real smoking area, this being china and all... The Grace Vineyards chardonnay from Beijing was a nice surprise! All in all, a good hotel, and I'd stay there again.

“Excellent hotel in top location!!”
Lovely well appointed rooms with beautiful views (ask for a view towards the Bund and Pudong). The staff were all exceptionally courteous, efficient and most helpful. We stayed in 2 other top hotels in Shanghai (one near the Bund, the other in Pudong) and Le Royal Meridien would be our clear choice for our next visit to Shanghai.
