“MOST LOUSIEST HOTEL I HAVE EVER STAYED OUTSIDE INDIA”
- PEOPLE ARE NOT AT ALL POLITE - DOES NOT KNOW EVEN BASIC ENGLISH AND SERVED SALT WHEN I ASKED FOR SUGAR - THE IN ROOM DINING WAS PATHETIC AND THEY CANT EVEN SERVE A GLASS OF MILK WITH SUGAR. - THE GLASES I USED ON THE FIRST DAY WAS NOT REMOVED BY THE HOUSE KEEPING PEOPLE TILL THE DAY I LEFT THE HOTEL - THERE IS NO 'NO SMOKING' FLOOR AND THE FLOOR WAS NOISY AND WITH FULL OF SMOKING PEOPLE - BREAKFAST SPREAD WAS VERY AVERAGE - I WOULD LIKE TO INSIST THAT THIS IS THE MOST LOUSIEST HOTEL I HAVE STAYED OUT OF INDIA AND I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND OR COME BACK TO THIS HOTEL EVEN IF THEY OFFER ME FREE ROOM
“Not recommended”
The hotel room smelled badly when we arrived and continued to smell badly for the first four days of our stay. The hotel tried to rectify the situation but to no avail. Secondly, the bathroom hot water faucets at the sink and in the bathtub were lukewarm at best even when they had been turned on for minutes. We were moved to a different, better room after four days of misery. For the price we paid, it was definitely a big disappointment. I would not recommend this hotel to others nor would I want to stay here again when I visit Shanghai next time.
“Right price, great location.”
Stay in a superior twin room from 11 Nov 2010 for 3 days. The hotel is a historical building so doesn't look flash from front but does have character. There are about 10 to 12 steps before you get to the reception so be prepared if you have heavy lugguage. Check in was relatively quick, only around 10 mins. Staff are ok but don't expect a smile or any enthusiam to help. Walking distance to most of the attractions with The Bund only 5 mins and the Nanjing Lu about 15 mins, there is an underground train (metro) station within 10 min walk as well. Use their Metro to explore other areas and attractions as they are quite easy to use. A day pass will set you back RMB$18. If trying local food is your thing then turn left once you come out of the hotel and walk 5 mins, there are 2 to 3 local restaurants there. Also lots of old heritage listed buildings that was built around the 1910 to 1935 can be found on that side of the hotel towards The Bund as well. Standard room is really small so worth paying a little more for a superior room. My room was clean and spacious but the water marks and the paint peeling off from the ceiling were very obvious. Considering the price and its location I certainly will stay there again next time when I visit Shanghai.
“Decent”
Hotel was decent. Very close to the bund. Staff could have been a little nicer, but they weren't awful. If you rlooking for a cheap convenient place, it works.
“great location, professional service”
great location. Hotel staffs are helpful and professional. Walking distance to Bund. Room is small but clean. Price is reasonable. Nearby neighborhood is clean and safe. Recommended.
“Pay the Extra to Upgrade to A Better Room”
Good location, clean & safe. Reception staff speak some english and taxis are easy to find. Walking distance to the Bund, Nanging Rd (shopping), YuYuan Gardens and the Metro. I stayed in both a standard room and a Deluxe room - the difference in quality is significant and worth the $$$ to upgrade. Breakfast is basic but sufficient, internet is a little costly (may be free if you upgrade) but fast, neighborhood is safe. Bed is hard (standard in China).
“2nd stay @ Metropole/Shanghai”
I stayed here three years ago in the summer. This time we stayed in November. We were very satisfied with every aspect of this hotel. Our only disappointment was a missed wake-up call even after three requests to the front desk to insure that we would be called. The art deco environment is beautiful and the location is central to walking to the Bund, Old City, Shanghai Museum and the Nanjing Lu shopping area. All in all it was a pleasant and quite place to stay.
“Great location + hotel, austere retro 1930s atmosphere of the Bund is experienced by staying here”
Initially stayed 5 nights in the superior deluxe room which was swanky. Singular weakness was the air con being 'turned off' for the season due to hotel policy [= inflexible beaureaucracy] but they offered us a fan to cope with the heat. Then moved to the cosy but clean standard room. Otherwise hotel nicely refurbished, conveniently located next to Nanjing Road East and the metro. Mixed neighbourhood with retro 1930s feel of the Bund side and crass consumerism of Nanjing road, together with more authentic Chinese enterprises of Fuzhou Lu and Jingling Lu. Would stay here again if I was coming back.
