“Excellant Hotel”

This is a 5 star hotel with excellent rooms and great views down the Bund. There are two restaurants in the hotel and breakfast is an extensive serve yourself arrangement with a good selection of western and asian food. The hotel is in an excellent position at the top of the Bund. It is only a short taxi ride to Shanghai International Airport (SHA) Overall a good place to stay.

“Not Impressed”

We were put on a smoking floor, & our room smelled of stale cigarete smoke, as did the corridors when you entered the floor. Our friends were given the choice when they checked in, so beware!! Breakfast was diabolical, running out of food at 0800hrs, 20 mins to cook an egg, don't book breakfast as good restaurants far cheaper nearby!! Location excellent for tourism, easy access to the Bund & shops.

Area recommendations
The Bund is full of activity, & nearby Nanjing road shopping precinct is good. Also old part of Shanghai.

“Think twice if this is what you want”

We came to this hotel based on the feedbacks here, and we were very disappointed. We stayed there 4 days in deluxe river view room. The location is great (no metro nearby), but for this rate there are many great hotels on the Bund. The hotel is old but not in a good sense, the carpets are not clean, the bathrooms are moldy. There is an unpleasant smell. There are two small elevators. The reception desk is very small and there is always a line up. Although we stayed in a non smoking room we constantly smelled cigarettes near our door. Internet rate is expensive and very slow in the evening. The connection is not Wifi!!! Food is also very expensive. Nevertheless we wanted to try the “French restaurant”. It was very embarrassing. Food was very poor, not french and not tasty. The restaurant’s decoration is pathetic, nothing that reminds a high quality restaurant. The waiters are unskilled. One of them kept running with her high heel boots confusing the meal order. We didn’t eat most of it. We were never asked about our satisfaction even when we left most of it. We came to this hotel after visiting in another hotel, which was wonderful - Eton hotel. Very clean and shiny. Internet cost. Breakfast was AMAZING!!!! The only problem of the Eton is the location, but Shanghai taxis are so inexpensive and also the metro is easy and very very inexpensive. We often wondered about the 4 star rating it has. We would certainly not go back.

“Historic Art Deco Hotel in Shanghai on the Bund”

We enjoy older Hotels with a history and if you are like us then you must stay at the Broadway Mansions Hotel in Shanghai. Built in 1934 this Art Deco beauty has a few stories to tell. It sits at the beginning of the Bund right across the Bridge and faces the Huangpu River. Our room faced the the river and the beautiful skyline that includes the World Financialenter and the CCTV Pearl in Pudong. SO at night the view is simply breathtaking. The Hotel has bell hops who actualy wear pill-box hats! The service is superb. There are several restaurants to enjoy and even a British Bar. But we really enjoyed the authentic Chinese Tea House on the second floor, Do take the time to enjoy the Chinese Tea Culture lesson at this tea house before you venture to the city. We were treated to a tea tasting and learned the mannerism of the tea ceremony. The leson was taught by two lovely ladies who showed such excellent appreciation for Chinese Tea Culture. Even the General Manager joined in! We really appreciated the lesson once we reached the Huxinting Teahouse in Yuyuan Gardens where we were complemented for our "civility".

Area recommendations
This Hotel is right on the Bund. From here we had access to the entire city either by bus or taxi if we didn't walk. The neighborhood is safe and clean - as well as breathtaking for its view.
Must see
Yuyuan Garden is a definite must see. We booked this trip to admire the architecture since we are fans of the Art Deco style. Shanghai will not dissapoint on that part but the "shebuki" style of ancient Chinese architecture found in the neghborhood surrounding Yuyuan Garden s equally superb and must be explored. Shopping and dining is the thing to do in Shanghai and we found this superb teahouse called the Huxingting Teahouse just outside of the Yuyuan Garden. Queen Elizabeth took her tea here and it was built primarily for the merchants to make their deals during the silk trade days. Also the shopping in the Xiantian District is amazing - my wife had lots of fun. Nanjing Road is also for shopping and it is sort of the Shanghai answer to Barcelona's "Las Ramblas" only with high tech lights. The memorial to the site of the first Chinese Communist Party meeting on Xinye Road is worth seeing if only for the irony of its modern surroundings - its near Xiantian with all its fashion stores and the Rolls Royce dealership is right down the sidewalk.
Dining
The crab dumplings at the Nanxian Bun Factory in Old Shanghai (near the Yuyuan Garden) is a must. There will be a long line as locals wait for their turn to score a large dumpling that must be eaten with care. Watch how the locals do it so as not to mess up your shirt. Grandma's Kitchen has Cantonese fare at the far east section of Nanjing Road. Try the Beggar Chicken or Dongpu Pork. Also try Yang's Fry Dumplings on Wujiang Road - superb! Don't forget to go to the Huxinting Teahouse for your traditional Chinese Tea Culture experience.

“Great hotel...shame about the smell!”

Wonderful hotel, great staff, incredible view (we had a river view room). The main down-side was the unpleasant smell of drains that pervaded the lobby area. It seemed to coincide with the raising & lowering of the river barrier, out front, so perhaps there were storm sewer problems?? Other than that it was a wonderful place to stay.

“A Classic Beauty Restored”

This is a marvelous old hotel that has been renovated and refurbished, yet has managed to maintain its charm. In many ways it reminds me of another grand old hotel, the Shoreham in Washington D.C. (in its better days). The rooms are large and comfortable, the amenities are modern, and the staff go out of their way to be both pleasant and helpful. The coffee lounge (ground floor with a window view) and the restaurants are first rate. Also, this hotel has one of the best equiped exercise rooms I have seen - and I am a serious strength and endurance trainer. The location is perfect- off the main drag of the Bund (just a couple of blocks down from the Peace Hotel in a slightly more residential area) with an incredible view of the entire waterfront (I took a slew of pictures from my windows) Would I stay here again? I most certainly will, next year!

Area recommendations
There is an awful lot to see in Shanghai - the Bund area and its surroundings are very Westernized, but the tourist attractions such as the Yu family gardens, the Jade Buddha, the City God temple (Cheng Huang Miao) and the Old City are very much worth seeing - and Shanghai is very much like New York in that it is just a great city to stroll through and see what catches your eye.

“Good Location”

Very pleased with the location on the edge of the Bund. Stepped out the door to many photo ops of the city. Subway is about a 15 minute walk so the use of a taxi may be better for some. Staff was friendly and service was good. Slight language barrier but nothing that patience couldn't overcome.

“Not as good as before”

I stayed at the Broadway Mansions two years ago, in 2009.Sadly, the hotel seems to be riding on its reputation - general condition was slightly worsened, though it's hard to put my finger on any one aspect. Internet access is not free - 8GBP per day which is excessive. Breakfast was good, but little touches which were there before were missing. Of course, the location is excellent. I was meeting a colleague and reception was unable to locate him, and indeed he had asked for me the previous evening (I had booked in at 2 pm) and they could not locate me either! May be to do with the chinese spelling of western names. For the price, I felt disappointed and will try another hotel next time I visit Shanghai.

“Would definately return”

Broadway Mansions was a fantastic hotel to stay in - clean, staff were great and always eager to please and location was excellent. The hotel was located at the northern end of the Bund and only 2 blocks away from Nanjing Rd. Alternatively a taxi cost a minimal amount to go anywhere. Easily accessible to the Bund area and great views from the Executive suites. Would definately return.

Area recommendations
This area was great as it was within walking distance to everything if you like walking or alternatively a taxi was cheap. The Bund was a very short walk across the bridge.

“Without question - highly recommend”

Outstanding location. Very nice room. Hotel staff was so helpful. I was only dissappointed that the on-site "British Bar" was closed. But that did not detract from the overall experience. I really enjoyed this hotel. For the price - I cannot imagine anything better. I will be returning to Broadway Mansions without question.
