Beautiful old world hotel

Posted 10-Dec-2014
Location: Very near the central avenue and about a 30 minute walk from the market and other tourist sites.
Usually when you stay in a hotel with "old world charm", you sacrifice cleanliness or modern conveniences. Not so with Hotel Grano de Oro. The room was comfortable, clean, updated, well decorated, and incredibly charming. The open air spaces and lush courtyards make it a stand out. The service was exemplary as well. I would recommend to anyone.

Great place to eat too!

Posted 17-Nov-2014
Pros: How different every part of the hotel is. The building is so beautiful.
Location: The hotel is a stand-out in a very uninteresting section of the city.
We had the most amazing meal here as well as a very nice stay here. Very unique. If I need to say in San Jose again, this is where we would say. It was worth the splurge.

The gem of San Jose

Posted 16-Nov-2014
Pros: The rooms, friendly staff, food, secure entrance and self parking.
Cons: I did not get the sense that there was a full time concierge, however all the hotel staff were friendly and helpful.
Location: The location is a bit sketchy but so was most of San Jose. We enjoyed the National Museum.
As you drive to the hotel you get a feeling that you are in the wrong neighborhood. The immediate surroundings are not a place you would think to take a stroll in. However once you arrive the hotel itself has a grand old hotel feel, the staff is excellent and welcoming many of which speak English well. There is parking if you have a rental car and the hotel has 24 hour security watching the entrance and Parking area. The rooms are a comfortable size and have a bed and breakfast feel, they often overlook or are attached to small gardens. The restaurant and bar at the hotel are top notch, the food and service is excellent... I had the duck breast our first meal there and was duly impressed. While I did particularly enjoy the city of San Jose if you have to stay these you will love this hotel and restaurant.

Very charming hotel. The restaurant is AMAZING! The staff was great, very helpfull in setting up transport and anything else we needed. Rooms were very nice, clean and comfortable. Only complaint if you can call it on is the beds are a little smaller than we like, but we are used to sleeping in a king. Overall great experience and would definitely go back.

Excellent hotel with fine dining restaurant

Posted 20-Sep-2014
We had such a nice experience at Hotel Grano de Oro. The entire staff went out of their way to be helpful. I believe there was also always someone on hand at the front desk who spoke English fluently. For our first night in a Spanish speaking country, this was such a big help! The rooms were very clean, and the restaurant was delightful. Would not hesitate a second to stay there again.

thank you for your comment. Our hotel has been in operation for almost 23 years, but the original house was a Tropical Victorian mansion (about 115 years old). We have remodeled the building and the rooms in such a way that we are able to provide all the comfort expected at a fine hotel, and yet keep the charm of the old house. We realized that some of the rooms are somewhat small, but this is no different as many other mansions that have been restored to become a hotel, I'm talking about average home bedrooms. Also every year during our low season we take a week or two to work in each room, so this is something we are doing right now, taking all the precautions so none of our guests notice the work or get disturbed because of it. Again thank you very much for your comments!

Oasis in San Jose

Posted 09-Sep-2014 on Hotels.com
The staff were all very helpful and the room was immaculate and very pretty. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Our only issue with the staff was during breakfast the waiter totally ignored modification requests and we had to send it back to be fixed. The hotel is quite elegant, however, we stayed while it was raining and it does rain a bit in the halls (there are open areas that are covered with clear plastic but rain still gets through). Not a big deal - just a little surprising. We were also a ways away from the "sights" of San Jose. I was hoping to walk to museums and such but we chose to drive. If I could do it again I'd book a tour of the city through the hotel; we were unable to find much of what I had wanted to see on our own due to the chaos in the streets.

Thank you for your comments, I'm very sorry for the mix up during breakfast, we will take actions to make sure something like this doesn't happen again, thank you very much for your feedback. We are 15 blocks west from Central Street, most of our guests take a taxi into town (the drive would take 5 to 10 minutes depending on the traffic), and then they get to visit the museums, parks, churches and markets, and as they do this they walk back towards the hotel. And you are right, taking your own car to downtown is not so good because of the one way streets, the many pedestrian bulevars and because it is so difficult to find parking. Thank you very much!
