Elegant hotel

Posted 12-Feb-2015
Pros: appearance, staff and restaurant.
Cons: air conditioning in room, we had to open windows to cool down, which was a little noisy.
Only stayed 1 night as we prepared to head back to the U.S. The hotel has wonderful ambiance and the staff is great. The bright spot was the dinner. The hotel is rated in the top 5 restaurants in San Jose, and our meal lived up to the expectations. Excellent wine list and food was prepared to perfection. I had the Sea Bass and my wife has the Lamb Chops. Great way to end a wonderful 2 week vacation in Costa Rica.

Beautiful boutique hotel with a very fine and equally as beautiful restaurant. Staff are warm and friendly and seem to genuinely enjoy being part of the Hotel's team.

This old Victorian mansion wasn't renovated it was restored to like new condition! The added benefit was that the bathrooms weren't restored but replaced with modern bathrooms.

Nice hotel in a city without many great choices

Posted 01-Feb-2015
Pros: Clean.
Cons: Free breakfast would be nice for the price they charge.
Location: The Gold museum was quite good. There is a Jade museum but we did not get there. Galerie Namu for indigenous crafts. Not much to see really.
We stayed for one night at the Grano de Oro at the end of a week in Costa Rica because we needed to be in San Jose for our morning flights. If you don't have to stay there for a flight, I would just skip San Jose because it is not that nice a city and there is not much to see or do there. The hotel is refurbished from 2 large mansions on a quiet street, 2 blocks from a bigger street that has dining options. It is a short taxi ride from the major museums and center of town. Its decor is decidedly old-fashioned, with dark woods, paneling, lace etc. Personally I prefer a light modern spa-like space, and this type of decor simply does not appeal to me, but that is personal preference. The room was comfortable and large. The bathroom was nice and clean, though ours was quite small with a tub/shower combo and one sink with a small counter. The beds and linens were great. There is no pool, but there are 2 jacuzzis set on a nice rooftop garden. The restaurant is very good and it was almost full the night we went in midweek, so be sure to make a reservation if you want to eat there. Overall, this hotel is quite expensive. The rooms are expensive for what you get. My friend and I each had 2 drinks at the bar and our bill came to $60, and dinner was also very expensive. The whole place is rather formal and I found the staff to be a bit stuffy rather than warm.

A nice place

Posted 30-Jan-2015
Pros: Nice place. Good food in the restaurant, although the staff is a little snooty and inattentive.
Cons: Ridiculously expensive laundry service. $80 for a load? Yikes. This is nothing like the rest of the city.
Location: Nothing in the area. 20 minute walk from downtown.
Nice place with a good restaurant, although expensive.

Hôtel de caractère

Posted 10-Jan-2015
