Location: Very limited on foot as in the middle of a residential area. Closest bar/restaraunt down the road was very good.
Stayed 3 nights total on either end of our guided vacation around the country. Staff was excellent - friendly and helpful. Facilities were nice. Beautiful, well lit grounds with great paths but close at 8 pm so we could not see after dinner so wish they were open later. Our 3rd floor room was above the kitchen area so had several odors drift into our room, but not in there very long so manageable. Next room was 3-4 rooms in and no issues. Food from the restaurant was enjoyable.

Nice, friendly neighborhood hotel

Posted 26-May-2014
Pros: All of the staff were wonderful
Cons: At times the shower would go very hot or quite cool.
Location: Used this as a home base, but didn't check out the neighborhood too much.
The hotel was a nice, neighborhood hotel with an exceptional staff that really went out of their way to please. Ask for a room overlooking the gardens and I would advise arriving during the day to allow for daylight hours to find the hotel. It is difficult to find in the dark. Overall, quite nice.

People to People-That is What Makes This Great!

Posted 12-May-2014
Pros: it is beautifully landscaped with unique gardens and sculptures. The butterfly garden is very beautiful. The staff is very professional and remember
Location: I can spend a couple days just enjoying the beautiful property. San Jose is about 15 minutes, the closest volcano is 35 or so minutes.
Close to the airport, quiet, calm and refreshing for travelers. The price of this hotel is great--so much value, great food, atmosphere and service. This visit we were traveling International-- in the very early morning-- the wonderful people arranged for a wee hour taxi, coffee before leaving, got me exact change for the ride and gratuities, our departure info was prepared and taxes paid in a jiffy. The trip went so smoothly. I looked around the airport and watched stressed out travelers and thought " this is why Bougainvillea is my choice hotel!"

Beautiful Amazing Garden Setting!

Posted 22-Apr-2014
After week in the rainforest and nicely hot and humid beach trip - Hotel bouganvilla was a perfect cool hilltop full service and perfect place to rest and wait for flight next day. Very friendly staff, pool, really amazing gardens well worth a trip to see anytime you are in/near SJ. 20 minutes from SJ airport and just so very nice. $30 cab ride, maybe share if you are in a group. Super gift shop. Thanks for everything.

Great hotel in city.

Posted 24-Mar-2014
Location: We had easy access to get to La Paz Waterfall and Poas Volcano Parks, as well as the airport.
The staff was very pleasant and welcomed us as if we had stayed at the hotel many times. Our room was very clean and the bed was excellent. We ate at the restaurant and the food was above average. Overall we would recommend this hotel and would happily stay again!

Great hotel

Posted 16-Mar-2014
Pros: I liked everything about this hotel and after seeing some of the other hotels in San Jose while picking up others for day trips, it's the best.
Cons: For my taste, the beds were too soft but that's a personal choice.
Location: The location is about 20 minutes outside of San Jose, depending on traffic so it's only a taxi ride away.
This is a lovely hotel just out of San Jose with a friendly staff and the most beautiful garden I have ever seen. The staff is always trying to make your stay better. You can book all your day trips, which we did and the restaurant has excellent food. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who loves a quiet walk through a 10 acre garden and I polite, helpful staff. The rooms are clean and comfortable with the garden view being the best.

Good place to stay on first night in Costa Rica

Posted 04-Mar-2014
Pros: Proximity to the airport, beautiful grounds, on-site gym and pool.
Location: We didn't spend any time in the immediate area, which didn't seem very inviting. This was a great place to recover from our flight before moving on.
We stayed at Hotel Bougainvillea on our first evening in Costa Rica, after arriving at the San Jose airport in the mid-afternoon. The hotel is conveniently close to the airport. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the hotel's beautiful grounds. We had a very tasty dinner in the hotel restaurant -- probably the best steak I ate in Costa Rica. We were traveling with our two children, who were welcome in the restaurant. There is a large and gorgeous garden behind the hotel, with interesting tropical plants and many birds. Really whet our appetite for the rest of our trip. There is also a nice pool and a good gym where my husband and I fit in a morning workout before hitting the road on day 2 of our trip. Overall, we were very pleased.

Second choice hotel will be first choice from now

Posted 02-Mar-2014
Pros: Besides the beautiful accommodations and the grounds, the hotel is heavily involved and invested in local community charities and educational support.
Cons: Not much.
I recently stayed at the Hotel Bougainvillea, as my second choice, when the recommended hotel closer to the airport was fully booked. Thank you hotel number one. My only regret is that I could only stay one night. As other reviewers have stated this is a beautiful garden that just happens to have a first class hotel on its grounds. Had I gotten in earlier I could have spent hours wandering around the gardens and admiring the beautiful plants, flowers, and other items of interest (as it was getting close to dusk I even said good evening to the iron statue sitting on a bench). The hotel staff was first rate (especially the very sweet young lady at the gift shop), the room was spacious and clean (hint: get a room with a garden view if staying a few days), and the food was delicious. The only negative for anyone catching a flight is the distance from the airport. The cab fare is about $25 and during the day the traffic can be fairly daunting, so leave early. However, the hotel will make cab arrangements for you, and they will be promptly waiting for you at the designated time. An additional bonus is that you can by your exit permit (yes, Costa Rica makes you pay a fee to exit the country) with a $2 hotel fee.
