Huge, beautiful grounds

Posted 18-Apr-2015
If we travel through San Jose again, I'll definitely come straight here. It's not very far from the airport and the city, but feels worlds away. We had dinner at the restaurant and the service was top-notch. They even made a dolphin out of a banana for the kids! It felt like staying at a fancy, expensive hotel, but at a moderate price. If you go, try to get a room that faces the garden. The street side can be noisy with travelers arriving and leaving both early and late. The only con of our stay was that our room was a little warm. And the water in the morning wasn't very hot. With a garden-side room, you could probably open the windows at night.

My hotel of choice in San Jose

Posted 06-Apr-2015
Pros: The staff really makes the difference. Many of them have worked with the hotel for nearly 20 years. That should tell you something!
Cons: The wifi is a bit spotty in the rooms.
Location: In a quiet residential neighborhood.
If you're looking for an amazing non-chain hotel, you won't regret choosing the Hotel Bougainvillea! It may be a bit further from the airport than the Alajuela and Cariari hotels, but it's well worth the drive. Spacious rooms with balconies, comfortable beds and linens, impeccably manicured gardens, a wonderful pool with spa and exercise room, free breakfast buffet to die for, a museum-worthy collection of artwork and sculptures in the common areas, and a hotel staff that caters to your every need. Believe me, this is a hotel you will come back to time and time again!

a beautiful place

The hotel has a wonderful garden. The staff is friendly, helpful and attentive - both at the reception and in the dining room. The rooms are spacious and clean. the interior of the hotel is special and beautiful - with all its paintings, artefacts and beautiful big minerals. I can fully recommend this hotel.

Comfortable and Pleasant Hotel

Posted 12-Mar-2015
This was a nice hotel to stay in if you want a quiet stay. (The time I was there, the crowd was 100% Baby Boomers.)The rooms were clean, the staff was wonderful and the garden was beautiful. The only issue we had was that the hotel was far from everything but if that is not a concern than this is a very comfortable place to stay. I like that there was a breakfast included in the price of the room. The food selection was decent but the coffee was too strong.

Great Find

Posted 04-Mar-2015
Pros: EVERYTHING!!!
Cons: Stay two nights - get the third night for free!!!
Location: The location of the hotel is obscure, to get around use either a taxi or rent a car. However if one is visiting national parks the location is fine.
After almost a month in CR starting in San Jose and traveling the pacific coast from south to north we spent the last three nights in Heredia/San Jose. We looked for a hotel where it would be possible to just unwind and found Hotel Bougainvillea. Our stay exceeded our expectation, the hotel offered everything we were looking for swimming pool, tennis, good food, fantastic service and as a bonus a magnificent garden with wonderful walkways. It was our second trip to CR and should we return we know where to stay "Bougainvillea" highly recommend it! OH almost forgot - bring your camera.

Oasis!

Posted 17-Feb-2015
Pros: Setting
After a long flight and a trip in rush hour traffic we were surprised to arrive at this great place. We had a wonderful stay at this hotel- the garden is like an oasis! The rooms were updated and clean- we enjoyed our patio with the view of the garden. They have a restaurant that serves local cuisine, nice breakfast buffet. We did take a cab to the city and checked out the museums (skip downtown shopping...) If you love nature and birds- it is a perfect place to start a tour of Costa Rica. We definitely would stay here again!

A pretty good hotel but very pricey

Posted 10-Jan-2015
Pros: It has some lovely gardens.
Cons: The restaurant utensils and glasses were consistently dirty.
The hotel is designed like a resort that you would fine around a beach. The hotel has some lovely gardens although the location is north of San Jose in the highlands in Santo Domingo. There wasn't much in terms of amenities within walking distance, so you are stuck if you don't have your own transportation. The restaurant is pricey for what you can get anywhere else in Costa Rica for much cheaper. The hotel is very safe, so if you want to avoid with sketchiness of San Jose but have a base in the Central Highlands then this is an option. But be prepared to spend a lot of money here.

Sehr gemütliches, friedliches Hotel

Posted 06-Jan-2015 on Hotels.com

Pros: The setting
Location: Nothing nearby, expect the bar/restaurant around the corner of the street the hotel is on is excellent.. Book some local tours
Wonderful Staff. Very helpful. Do NOT book the local jewelry tour. Its a scam
