“Best Western San jose downtown”
Hotel situated sort in a slum area ( it was built before area became that way ) . Walking distance from center ect. Told us to allways use taxi after dark . Rates are low . They have changed the shuttle service from the airport . They pick you up but now drop you at Best Western Irazu where they pay the taxi to the downtown hotel . The return to the airport use to be $5.00 now you must pay a taxi fare around $25.00. ( so add $20.00 to your hotel rate ). Furthermore the breakfast has been reduced to more or less a continental type . Staff is real nice and helpfull .

“good if you wanna be in downtown”
the hotel was nice from inside but the neighborhood is not safe at all i liked the welcome drive that they gave me when i arrived there the clerk was nice
“Not the best neighborhood”
First impression wasn't great because the club across the street was blaring music when we arrived and continued into the night. Manager was kind enough to tell us not to walk outside after dark. He spoke english well, made dinner reservations for us, and called us a cab. Beds were comfortable. We were also given 2 free drinks upon arrival and breakfast was included. Walls in the room were all brick, old looking, and there was no soap for the shower.
“.Pat”
The hotel itself was OK. Appreicated free international phone calls. The immediate area was terrible. Locals told us not to walk in the area. We spent a lot on taxis.
“nice hotel...shady neighborhood, not for suburbanites.”
Close to everything but not safe to walk in area after 9pm. This is located near a weird part of the city but if you are from a big city the area should not shock you. Not for families but for adults its a great deal.
“A dangerous neighborhood”
The Hotel lobby was very nice and so was the dining area, but not so much the room. Needs to remodel, especially the bathroom. Upon arrival, the taxi driver warned us that the location is not a good place for Americans. Hence, we didn't leave the hotel at all. Thankfully we were only there for a 1 night stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They made the stay enjoyable.
“Not jumping to go back”
The Best Western in Downtown San Jose was functional for a short night before dropping off the rental car to fly out. The hotel was dark, but decently clean with ample towels. The walkways were covered, but open to the outdoors with a very nice courtyard and outdoor pool area that was like an oasis. The hotel felt secure with a doorman and gated parking. This was one of the only hotels on our journey that had absolutely no bugs, but I'm not sure it was worth the extra price we paid. The pool would have helped, but unfortunately it was raining pretty hard all night that particular night. This hotel was decent, but outside the gates and walls you are not in a very good area. It is very close to Central Ave with all it's food and shops, but not a safe or appealing walk at night. Also, buy any food or drinks before you get to the hotel, the price for a soda at the restaurant is worse than a mini-bar!
“Terrible area surrounding it!”
I stayed here for one night because I had to catch a flight out of San Jose early the next morning. The ride to the hotel was a ways from the airport and when I arrived at the hotel, the neighborhood was awful surrounding it!!! There is a loud bar directly across the street and other than that it looked like a bunch of run down buildings. I definitely would not be outside past dark around there. The rooms are dark, and they are not in an enclosed portion of the building, the door and walkway is open to the outside. About the only thing positive I can say is that the men working the desk were very nice and helpful.
“Hotel was good but bad neighborhood”
The hotel it self was nice, vary clean and basic. The Expedia rate was great. The hotel walls and security made me feel safe inside the hotel.....but all the area surrounding the hotel was unsafe. There is a bar across the street and some shady charaters were hanging out on the porch of the bar most of the day. Hotel scurity, cab drivers and locals suggested we not walk anywhere from the hotel. At night the security guard met us our vehicles and escorted us in and then locked the doors behind us. Again the hotel was simple not luxurious but I was impressed with how clean it was kept. The hotel took every measure to ensure guest safety but there is nothing they can do about the area around the hotel. Next time I would probably stay at the Irazu Best Western before this one.
