Disappointed

Posted 23-Jun-2014
The A/C did not work in one room and they moved us to another room only to find that this one did not work either! The staff was nice and the place was clean but over all I would not stay there again. They tried to claim that it was not the same as "USA" A/C but I have stayed in many places in Costa Rica without that problem. For the price I expected more.

Phone Service

Posted 27-May-2014
Pros: Convenient location, good shopping, restaurants. casinos and famous Blue Marlin Bar nearby
Cons: Phone service
Location: The city center is convenient.
I went to Costa Rica to meet the lady I had been writing to for months. She called my room 4 times but there was not red light flashing on my phone indicating a call... Stayed in the hotel 2 days and did not see her.. Read her e-mails when I returned home..

Kind, accommodating staff.

Posted 19-Apr-2014
Pros: Kind staff and breakfast buffet.
Cons: The furniture and look of the hallways and rooms was a bit dated and tired looking.
Location: Very convenient to San Jose airport.
I found the hotel to be a bit dated. The lobby was nice, but it was a bit awkward to enter the reception area through a parking garage. We were here for one night, on our way home from the Arenal volcano area. It was fine for one night, but I don't think I would have stayed much longer. The free breakfast buffet was delicious and the hotel staff were very kind.

DO NoT recommend staying here.

The room smelled like mold, really bad. The towels looked like they were 10 years old. And we had a view of 3 other walls of the hotel. I would NOT recommend this hotel.

Great Hotel!

Posted 08-Mar-2014
Pros: Staff, Food, Rooms
Cons: Softer sheets
Location: National Theatre, PreColumbian Gold Museum, Central Market, everything.
I really liked my stay at this hotel! The room was really nice and the staff was excellent! My only complaint would be a really minor one, the sheets weren't very soft, and as me and my boyfriend like to do some um recreational activities, it was sort of hard on the knees. Other than that it was a wonderful stay, excellent staff, and breakfast! :)

Loud, loud, loud

Tons of early morning construction right outside window starting at 630am. Terrible way to be forced to wake up way too early. Breakfast was not good. Weak coffee and stale pancakes. Didn't see anyone making fresh eggs while I was in dinning room. The big plus is free calls to USA and walking distance to lots of nightlife

It was fine although we could not get clean towels sent up to our room. I did however leave stuff in the room and they were great about getting it back to me!

Close to all in central city

The room was very nice and spacious (superior room). I know some guests may not agree with me if I said I enjoyed the shower very much. It was pretty strong and it helped to relax my muscle after a long day of activities. The mattress was pretty good to my back, not very soft, just the right firmness. Convenient to explore around down town on foot. Although I read there's a safety issue; however we walked around at 7pm and I found it was safe to walk around. To find this Hotel was a little tricky because it's in the central busy town. The Breakfast items were awesome. The restaurant also served great food, a bit pricy however. I would stay here again if I ever come to visit San Jose, Costa Rica in the future.

Great hotel, especially for the price

Posted 02-Feb-2014
Cons: My room was on the side facing Avenida Central, so it got pretty noisy at times, though not enough to keep me awake.
Location: It's right in the heard of downtown San Jose, alongside Avenida Central. Convenient mini-mall on the ground floor.
I've stayed in numerous hotels in San Jose and other parts of Costa Rica, but this was my first time staying at the Balmoral, so I didn't know what to expect. It's one of the pricier hotels I've stayed at, but in my opinion, it was well worth what I payed. My room was spacious, well-kept, clean, and very comfortable. I never had problems getting hot water or good water pressure. All of the appliances worked; even the safe was easy to use. Friendly English-speaking staff. Nice restaurant on Avenida Central with a good atmosphere and fun for people watching. The included breakfast was decent, though it's a shame it ends at 9 AM and not 10 AM. This is the best hotel I've stayed at in San Jose for the price, and I would definitely stay here again.
