“Ok for one night in transit”
The room was clean and well kept, and the location is right in the center in the busy streets for shopping. However, the views from the room are over a shabby courtyard, the bathroom poorly refurbished. Not a big deal, but beware: the pictures on the hotel site are very deceitful...thank you Photoshop...
“Great Holiday”
The hotel was excellent. The staff superb. In had one minor problem with the phone. I contacted the front desk, and the problem was corrected in an hour. The daily free breakfast was on the American style, and was delicious. The restaurant, El Patio, had a variety of items both American and Costa Rican. Would definitely recommend this hotel to any and all.
“Overall excellent experience”
Overall excellent experience, great customer service, well English speaker, great restaurant, clean room and compare to other hotels, this was the best hotel around.
“Excellent service and friendly people”
I've stayed in this hotel a few times and have always enjoyed my stay. The hotel is centrally located in downtown San Jose and near shopping, museums and restaurants.
“Hidden Gem”
Very friendly, helpful staff. Right on Central Ave., close to all.. Renovations are almost done, rooms very comfortable and clean. Will be going back for sure..
“Mid-renovation but still good”
We recently arrived at the Balmoral Hotel late on a Sunday night. We had high expectations based on the online pictures and reviews but were slightly surprised when our cab pulled into the back entrance/garage of the hotel. Turns out they are currently in the middle of renovations to the front lobby and entrance which explained our disappointment when we initially arrived. The hotel staff were very friendly and gave us directions to a fantastic, local restaurant that was open late. The room was smaller than expected but still clean and comfortable. Since there were 3 of us, we were charged an additional $30.00 fee over the original price purchased on Expedia which didn't go over too well since we didn't require any additional services or an extra bed. However we discovered that our room did include a free breakfast at the fantastic hotel cafe the next morning but we still thought $30.00 was a little expensive. It could have been that our expectations were too high or the renovation, however all in all I’d recommend staying at the Balmoral if you are looking for a nicer hotel that is central in San Jose however I wouldn’t go out of my way.
“Out of Chaos Calm”
We were extremely disappointed by the fact that their website stated that ALL rooms were furnished with Sleep by Number beds as we were looking forward to testing them out for a future purchase. We checked with friends who were also staying in the same hotel and theirs didn't have oine either. We inquired with both the conceirge desk; and also at the front desk and requested a room with one, they said that they "did not have any, nor did they ever have them." If you weren't looking on testing one of these beds while on vacation, then the place is otherwise comfortable and clean; and the staff is otherwise very helpful and pleasant. Note - They are also are in the midst of updating & upgrading and did a great job of making the place look good dispite the renovations (no noise). There is also a restaurant off of the main walking street called El Patio - which serves very good food - friendly and accomodating. If you are looking to stay in San Jose it is a nice hotel, centrally located and well priced. Check out the Free all you can eat buffet at El Patio. I would not recommend staying in San Jose for more than a couple of days if you are visiting as a tourist as there are cleaner cities and prettier places to stay in Costa Rica.
“just fine for a short stay in san jose”
small but clean and comfortable room. our room was facing another building so there wasn't a view or anything, but it was right in downtown san jose and convenient to touristy spots and walking around in the city. a totally acceptable place to spend a night or two (we just stayed there one night - didn't find that there was a whole lot to do in san jose itself...)
“Probably the Nicest of the Downtown Hotels”
Balmoral Hotel is a very nice, clean hotel. The surrounding downtown area is not as charming as Escazu or some of the more modern, wealthier suburbs. If you are wanting to stay in downtown San Jose, Balmoral Hotel is probably your best bet.
