“Hut in the Jungle”

Your own personal hut is surrounded by luscious foliage. The birds in the morning will make sure to wake you up, but worth it for the beautiful surroundings. However, the air conditioning was more like a fan and most of the time in the evenings it was cooler outside than inside and the beds were rather hard. You will see a few ants crawling around, but hey, you're in the tropics, what do you expect?

“Will Visit Again”

Warm, friendly and inviting. The staff was par excellence and the meals were wonderful.

Getting around
Getting around is relatively easy. You have a choice of using the bus system, which is quite reliable, or a rental car.

“Pretty grounds, great food, nice staff, great excursions, okay accommodations.”

Nice enough place to stay, fairly clean rooms, beautiful grounds, and delicious food. The excursions to Tikal and ATM were fabulous and the hosts can arrange for great guides. Be warned that the pool is nothing special and they don't serve alcohol. Conveniently located just off the Western Highway, easy to find.

Area recommendations
San Ignacio and Santa Elena were interesting -- would've liked to have had time to go to the market, which takes place on Saturday. The river also looks inviting to play in. Restaurant we ate at was okay, parking is tight in the town, but there are lots of supermarkets where you can pick up supplies. This was an easy two hour drive from the International airport, and is easy to find.

“Excellent Service”

The owners, Bart and Suzi provide a very welcoming setting and good food. The grounds are beautiful and heavily planted with exotic plants. A very plsant place to base your Cayo activities from.

“Tropical Adventure”

The best thing about Maya Mountain is the personal attention and the personal service you will receive. The guided trips arranged through the Lodge were a little pricey but the trips to Tikal and Barton Creek Cave were excellent. We also rented a canoe for a trip down the Macal River. The water level was perfect in early December, and the wildlife viewing extraordinary. There were very few mosquitoes, which is a good thing, since the windows have wooden shutters and curtains, but no window glass or screens. The roof is thatched, which kept us dry and made a soft patter when it rained. The room was air-conditioned, but we kept the windows open until nightfall. The bath is separated from the bedroom by a curtain, which was a little weird. The only problem was the bed was hard, my pillow lumpy, and the porch chairs are bare wood. After 4 days I was in need of a soft place to rest. While dietary needs are accommodated, there are not breakfast and dinner menu choices. Everyone is served the same meal, featuring local cuisine. The meals were very nice. The portions were not huge, but I was always full after dessert. The dining area and cottages are surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. We could always watch hummingbirds working the flowers. It is a fun place to stay, just don't expect it to be a luxury resort. It is a really good value, and a great base for adventures into the surrounding country.

Traveller's tip
We traveled to Belize the first week of December, which had several advantages. Lodging and tourist destinations were not crowed. The water level on the Macal River was excellent, since it was just after the end of the rainy season. There were almost no mosquitoes in San Ignacio, Belize or Tikal, Guatemala. The "cool" weather meant highs in the low 80's and low's in the mid 60's. Perfect weather for climbing Mayan temples.

“Maya Mountain Lodge, San Ignacio, Belize”
