“Great location”

The location of this hotel is fantastic! The only downside was being able to hear the noise from the hall and outside. The room need a lot more attention in regards to maintance, but when you only sleep there it is fine

“San Fran Trip Nov 2011”

If you all you need is a place to sleep and shower that's close to the downtown area. Then this is the hotel for you. Some of the rooms don't have tables for you to do your work/eat on, if you opt to bring food back to the hotel. Bottom line is the hotel is really sold for its location, not its amenities.

Area recommendations
Recommend visiting the Hayes Street area lots of small local shops with some interesting items not available elsewhere; such as TAD Gears and the Blue Bottle Coffee Kiosk.

“A good place to stay, but nothing special”

It is a really good place to stay if you want to visit SF. Nothing special. The hotel is old, but looks very good and clean. The room was very small, but for me that was enough. I think that this hotel is not very good place to stay with kids.

“Clean, charming, perfect for my visit”

Business travel for me and vacation for my husband. The Powell is the perfect location vor convenience. Easy access to the financial district, shopping, and public transportation. BART entrance right at the door. The hotel is great, clean with 20th century charm. No air conditioning but you do not need it in San Francisco. I would stay there again.

Area recommendations
Depends on your reason for traveling. I like the Union Square area because hotels are more affordable, with easy access to many areas of the city.
Getting around
Bay Area Transit (BART) and street cars can get you to wherever you want to go. It is a wonderful city for walking. Renting a car for a trip to San Francisco is not necessary.
What to pack
San Francisco is cool most of the year so always pack a jacket.
Dining
Wonderful food to satisfy most tasts. My personal favorite is the Jazz Dinner clubs.

“STAFF WAS VERY GOOD.”

The Powell was a very nice 3 star hotel. It was build in 1908 but was clean and convenient. Many great places to eat. Only a short walk to Chinatown.

“scotch and other stuff”

It was a little noisy around 2-3AM, when the "drunks" returned and the restaurant/bar emptied their glassware. Other than that, it was not a bad place and it was a LOT cheaper than the hotel across the street, by far. ANd, its San Francisco. Fire Engines go by often and they have dumpsters at other places. Live with it.

Area recommendations
Its not easy to recommend an area because people come to the city for different reasons. It was almost $100 cheaper at this hotel than the place we attended an event, so it was beneficial to stay. Then, it was only 1 block from BART, so we didn't have to pay exorbitant rates to stay in SF for parking. ANd, it was downtown. So, I just recommend this site because
Getting there
We stayed three blocks from our event. it was cheaper there was adequate shopping, and the area, besides the "protesters" (about 10) it was peaceful and reminiscent of a typical San Francisco night.
Dining
The chieftain was extraordinary for the beer and the food. Don't go there when its rugby time or you can't get in. period.
