Good location but hotel is 'tired'

Posted 22-Sep-2014
The location just off Union Square was convenient, the staff was pleasant, but the hotel is tired and the amenities could use upgrading. The historic appeal is there, but if you're looking for luxury, this is not the place. There was a lot of street noise (cable car bells, whistles, sirens) and the old windows in the guest room were not up to the job of blocking it. The bathroom was only slightly bigger than those found on a plane, with an ancient - chipped - cast iron tub squeezed in (with no counter space) and the fixtures were falling apart. The hotel restaurant, Scala Bistro, was very good, but somewhat pricey.

Our San Francisco weekend

Posted 14-Sep-2014
Pros: The hotel has a good theme, and we like the name. We also enjoyed the tasteful furnishings of the rooms, and other hotel facilities.
Cons: The size of rooms would be a hard one for the hotel to address, but our room was way too small. Having a shake up of staff is paramount.
Location: Absolutely the perfect location, it would be difficult to beat - unless you wanted to be nearer Fisherman's Wharf I suppose.
This was the second time we stayed at this hotel. I think, without realising it, we must have been upgraded the first time and this gave us a great impression. Our visit this time was disappointing, for two main reasons - our room was too small, well furnished, but just not big enough. The bathroom was particularly small, no room for two people and little room for one. And secondly, considering the projected standard of the hotel, the staff were too casual and the standard of dress not in keeping with what we would have expected.

The great stay in the city center

Posted 09-Sep-2014
The hotel is great, beautiful, clean, stuff is friendly and drinks at the bar are delicious. Bus and cable car stops right are right in front of the hotel. Walking distance to restaurants, shops and all u need while in San Francisco. I loved the view from my room I could even see the bay. I would highly recomend this hotel.

Too small for comfort

Posted 27-Aug-2014
Pros: It was clean.
Cons: Not sure if they can build out their bathrooms.
Location: There were several homeless people and the area was noisy. But it was walking distance to Macy's and some high end dept stores.
If you like a little space, this hotel is not for you. The room was so small and the bathroom literally only had a 2 x 2 area to stand. The toilet, tub and very tiny sink were all up on each other. It was quite challenging to apply make up. There's no counter space. I had to utilize the toilet lid and place my stuff on top of it. Ugh! The hotel is definitely historic and the rooms are filled with unique and beautiful furnishings, but in my opinion that did not make up for the lack of square footage. Overall, the area is boarder line seedy unless you head toward the shopping area where Macys is located. The hotel was overpriced and I will not return.

Dear Arlene, I appreciate your review. We listen to our guest comments. We are waiting for the shelves and once we have that in our hands, we'll be installing them to increase the storage area. Most importantly, Union Square and our hotel's immediate surrounding area is a home to the world-class shopping and dining. Thanks for visiting us. Jim Gross, General Manager

Pros: Nothing
Cons: Everything
Location: Don't go to Union Square - it is a tourist trap and the stores are in every mall in America.
I wrote a long detailed review and Expedia refused to publish it. So all I will say now is this hotel was horrible, loud, inconsiderate and overpriced. Never, ever will we return to this property.

One night wasn't enough!

Posted 20-Aug-2014
Pros: Beautiful, great location, clean
Cons: Nothing that I can think of
Location: Sears food may be a tourist staple, but it was beautiful and had fantastic food with great service. Trolley stops right in front of hotel!
We stayed one night so we could get in a tour of Alcatraz before our Cruise. We had to rush from the airport to the pier to make our tour, stopping quickly to leave our bags. My husband didn't even have to enter the hotel to check our bags - how wonderful! The staff couldn't have beem more friendly, the room was clean, well appointed and very roomy, and there are no words to describe how beautiful the hotel was! When we had to leave the hotel the next day to head down to our cruise ship, our requested taxi van was waiting for us. Great location and fantastic hotel!

Dear Trisha, It always bring our spirits up to read a review like yours! We always strive to provide the best service, but it's nice to get a positive confirmation from one of our guests! Our hotel has plenty of history behind it starting with our 'Prohibition Room'. On your next visit, please ask for a tour! Sincerely, Jim Gross, General Manager

great position, experience so so - Beware

Posted 19-Aug-2014
Pros: position great, bar, foyer and Scala restaurant great.
Cons: management and staff
we booked this hotel for 2 nights, paid A$828.00 for 2 nights. our room was small, which was fine as I had not paid a higher rate for a larger room. however I was not impressed when I found that they had put us in a room on the 20th floor, directly under the night club dance floor n the 21st , the bar and dance floor where pumping until 1.30am close. I was very annoyed as I feel the hotel should have advised us of this prior to accepting our reservation and the room should have been heavily discounted as a result thereof. I spoke to the night duty staff on the Saturday evening to raise my concerns, they were not very helpful and did not offer an alternate room. For the rate paid, I did not get any value . the staff had a no care attitude.

Dear Basile, I appreciate your candid comment. I'm mostly disappointed that you felt our staff did not show the care you wanted. We do offer to move our guest to another room when requested whenever we have other compatible rooms available. It is likely that the hotel was sold out. Please know that I will mention your experience with my front desk team. Regards, Jim Gross, General Manager

Nice historic hotel, unbeatable location

Posted 12-Aug-2014
Pros: ambience
Location: Location is right next to Union Square, on Powell St. where the cable car runs
We loved the Sir Francis Drake. The staff is wonderful and the rooms are funky and not over restored. By necessity bathrooms are small. We had a corner room with great views (2010), but on the20th floor, which means LOUD at night, because their nightclub is just above. They provided earplugs once we requested them, and a very nice gesture, took the breakfast charge off our bill. We would definitely stay there again, just not on the 20th floor.
