Prepared to get nickled and dimed at this horrendous hotel that is just blocks from the notorious mass lootings at Union Square and the Tenderloin. On top of the total nightly cost you pre-paid, you'll also have to pay $20. Of course, they don't make you pay this upfront so they seem cheaper than your other options, and once you're there, it's not like you're going to move hotels for $20. Literally 5 minutes after I booked, I called to request a refund and they refuse. Let's be honest-- this is a pure money grab, combined with a lazy receptionist. It's not like I blocked another customer from booking that room in the 5 min I held it. If you're going to force me to use your poor service, you think I'm going to be a happy customer?

I really like that the area what’s close to a lot of places! It was pretty easy to travel around the city. I didn’t like the breakfast, I wish there were more options!

The first night the safe would not open with my wallet inside. It ended up that the safe was broken, and It took maintenance around 20 to 30 minutes to get the safe open. Then the safe started beeping constantly as soon as the maintenance man left he came back and fixed it. I was unable to get ready for bed until after 10:30 PM as a result of the safe. Also, my room was super cold and it was necessary to bring in a space heater because the floor board heating was inadequate.

The Hotel was great! Very clean, comfortable! The room was very cool. The staff were friendly helpful and always smiling! The Building is very old and you can tell. But they have remodeled and renovated it with still keeping the charm and originality of the building. The area is right in downtown so it is very convenient for shopping and Chinatown and exploring the downtown area. The great part about the hotel is after a day exploring the excitement and bustle of the city. Being back at our room was like a quite tranquil oasis to recharge and relax! The one thing you should expect is parking in San Francisco is not easy or cheap! Fortunately the hotel has a deal with progressive parking around the corner that helps soften this blow. We were so impressed and enjoyed every minute at The Inn at Union square! We will stay here again next time we visit the Bay Area!

Inn at Union Square is always quite. There was some road work in front while there this time. I still was not bothered by it as the hotel had upgraded my stay this time. I travel to San Francisco three times a year for work. Worst thing about this area which hotel has not control over is that many shops are closed or closing due to the area a little ways away from where the hotel is. I would love to see SF clean up the city. Businesses and residents are losing out. As far as safety I have never felt unsafe.

I enjoyed my stay in a clean , quiet and well lit room. Thanks for accommodating my needs . The staff at the reception was always kind. My only recommendation is that a client should be told about the $20 when they book or have that amount as part of the price instead on learning about the changes after finalizing the booking.

Nice friendly and helpful reception. Quaint historic building with internal refurb and modern fittings. Comfortable bed. Very noisy heater (?) thing in our room that we fortunately didn’t need to use. Light breakfast included. Good location for BART and cable car.

This was my first time in Portland and on a whim, I selected the Heathman Hotel after looking at a few photos. Greatest investment ever! The location was super convenient and very walkable. The room was cozy. And the library lounge… a dream to sit in after a walking to get a morning coffee. I will definitely book a room again for my next visit because the Heathman Hotel began my Portland trip with flying colors!

First timer, but now I will stay here all the time? This lovely boutique hotel is historical, quaint and updated, without losing its historical charm. Love, love, love the fire escape! Sandwiched in between Morton’s Steakhouse and The iconic No. 3 Elks’s lodge, with views of Union Square, what’s not to love. ❤️

the bed was comfortable and so clean, but caused backache in the morning; in fairness we're used to a really top notch mattress at home. the people were all incredibly nice and made check in/check out personal and easy. the continental breakfast was decent but didn't look like photos on expedia. guessing that was the spread they offered before covid

Inn at Union Square is a small "boutique"-style facility, of which there are many in San Francisco. It's similar to the small, older hotels in European cities. Our room appeared to be recently renovated/refurnished (given the age of the facility), and the small common areas on each floor are clean and neatly furnished. Overall, we enjoyed the facility and thought it a very good value. The location a block from Union Square is fantastic for access to the heart of S.F. But there were a couple small glitches. First, the breakfast provided is minimalist (coffee, yogurt, bagels and some small pastries). The $20/night "amenities" fee that the hotel charges, on top of the listed room price, is in effect a "nuisance fee" that allows their advertised room prices to be $20 lower than the "real" price you pay. Second, our bathroom was clean with relatively new fixtures that worked well. However, the back of the sink cabinet is about 1.5 inches from the wall, and small items such as toothbrushes, soap bars, cosmetics items, can easily fall into the crack and be extremely difficult to recover. A toothbrush of ours fell behind the sink, and in recovering it I dislodged 3 bars of soap, two additional toothbrushes, and a number of small toiletry packets lost by previous occupants.
