Great location in the city

Posted 04-Jul-2015
The hotel was centrally located which made it easy to walk through the city and hop on and off different forms of transportation. The staff was very helpful with directions and recommendations. The hotel is older so it's not the fanciest but overall a good experience.

A place to stay in San Francisco city

Posted 04-Jul-2015
Pros: The proximity to public transport.
Location: Close to Union Square and the cable cars, street cars, BART etc.
An expensive old hotel with small rooms. On arrival one of the staff "stole" our bags off us as we walked to reception to check in. He was rude and pushy, we didn't need help with our bags. He then expected a tip for taking them to our room. Not a very good first impression for us of San Francisco. At least the room was clean and tidy and everything worked.

Close to Union Square

Posted 03-Jul-2015
Pros: The amazing staff!
Cons: Sound-proof rooms; update hallways and room walls and trim to look as up-to-date as the lobby. It's a bit of a let down once stepping off the elevator
Location: It's a few steps from Union Square and central to everything - food, shopping, taxis, art galleries.
Good location with up-to-date furnished lobby. Rooms are cleaned fairly well, but carpets need cleaning in rooms. Double rooms are rather small and do not have a lot of room for two to move around at the same time. Moreover, walls are thin and need acoustic work to eliminate room-to-adjacent room noise leaks. Bathrooms lack counter space for toiletries for two. One shelf below the mirror is not enough space for ladies, even with one person in the room alone. We had to use the toilet lid to provide enough space to put our toilet cases while in the bathroom. Staff is amazing! If you want to see top notch customer service in action, observe the staff at this hotel. Plus, you get free wi-fi.

Next to Union Square opposite Westin St. Francis.

Posted 01-Jul-2015
Pros: It is just across from Union Square and is very conveniently located. Safe and happening area. Very lively.
Cons: We understand the preservation of Historical Value but guest comfort needs to be focused as charged.
Location: Next to Union Square .
Stayed at the Historical Wing. And yes, it deserves to be called historical as everything in the room was ancient and outdated. Nice attempt on covering up the aging walls and more with a new coat of paint and furnishings. Room was stuffy as windows were not able to open. sticky handles and old carpets. Bathroom was clean and renovated but still outdated. Stayed on the pool floor before and really liked the rooms as it was spacious and well maintained. No more Handerly for us in the Historical Building.

Breakfast not incl. "b/c we booked with Expedia"

Posted 30-Jun-2015
We stayed for four nights in June. Our first morning they informed us breakfast wasn't included for us because we booked through Expedia, although foreigners booking through travel companies receive the breakfast vouchers. Given that letdown, and the fact that the weather was far too cold to make using the heated pool comfortable, I regret choosing this hotel. We also ended up in the "historic" part of the hotel. While the rooms were renovated, they are cramped--particularly the bathroom. CA has a water shortage, which probably explains the lack of water pressure in the shower. We did eat breakfast in the hotel the first morning and paid over $50 for one waffle, one yogurt with fruit, one tea, one coffee and one juice. The location is near Union Square and Chinatown, but we spent most of our time down near the water and at Golden Gate Park. The lines to ride the trolley are crazy long if you don't get there early. We waited over an hour to get on a trolley to return to our hotel one night and ended up walking all the way back another night (quite the workout on the hills). The room was clean, and the staff friendly, but I would choose a hotel near the waterfront next time.

Great location and some good rooms

Posted 30-Jun-2015
Pros: Location, pool, free wi-fi.
Cons: CONCIERGE
Location: Union Square has tons of shopping but also easy access to cable cars, 20 minute pleasant walk to piers for Exploratorium, etc.
Location is terrific. Hotel has 2 buildings: "historic" (old with small noisy rooms overlooking street) & "premier" (where you want to stay). Expedia booking got us historic building so we upgraded (negotiated from original quote of $40 per night to $20). This got us a significantly larger room overlooking the interior courtyard of the "premier" building where the outdoor heated pool is located. Pool was warm enough to use even with cool evenings, with heat lamps around it. Pool closes at 8:00 so being near it is not noisy, except in the AM but we were up by 8:00 anyway. Room had frig, toilet separated from sink by door, two fairly comfortable beds, updated fixtures, a sitting area so adults could sit up and read/work while kids slept. We asked for quiet room & got one at the end of the hall with no foot traffic past our windows like some of the others. Wi-fi was free but not very good. HUGE negative was the concierge--arrogant & unhelpful. Asked for a quick, inexpensive meal for 2 tired children & 2 casually dressed adults. Gave us names of 4 tourist traps with entrees priced $25-$35. When I challenged these prices as far from "cheap" he haughtily told said "this is Union Square." We proceeded to find a number of nearby places that fit our needs. Overheard him push same places on other guests. He apparently didn't like me publicly challenging his advice because he was openly rude to me for the rest of our five night stay. Other staff were better but not great.

Oh the stairs!

Posted 28-Jun-2015
Pros: Great service and friendly people. Very nice restaurant next door.
Cons: Better way to get to the lobby from the part of the hotel above the parking garage.
Location: Right off Union Square, lots of shoppig
Great room but hard to get to the lobby. Had to get to another part of the hotel and had to go past the pool and rec area and up and down stairs to get there and back to the room. Hard with bad knees. My room was fabulous though with a great view! Wonderful staff!
