“Great location, mediocre rooms”
small, noisy room didn't allow for any movement or relaxation in the room, but ok if its only a place for resting. will probably try another hotel next time.
“Value for money, basic hotel, not glamorous but practical and in a good location for a short stay.”
Had 2 days in San Francisco and wanted a cheaper hotel in a good location. This hotel met that requirement.
“Close to union square”
Simple hotel but decent price close to union square shopping and cable cars. but not very luxury. the air conditioning kinda sucked. old part of hotel better than newer part.,
“Disappointed at the Handerly in San Francisco”
Old hotel and it felt that way. Also, too expensive for the condition of the hotel and parking was about $40. If you can put up with the drunks and the smell of weed in the area, you might enjoy the local shopping. I will not stay at this hotel or area again.
“The world's tiniest bathroom! AVOID ROOM 210!!”
I had stayed here in 2008 and loved it. So, when planning this year's trip I considered staying at the Handlery again. When my first choice (The Orchard) didn't fall within my budget, I decided to return to the Handlery. First, you can't beat the location. It's on Geary just off of Powell, so you have good access to cable cars (NEVER call them trolleys!), buses, shopping, taxis, and restaurants of every stripe. Chinatown is a few blocks away and you can walk to North Beach and even the Wharf if you are ambitious. Second, the staff is gracious and pleasant. There were a few hiccups (my feather free room still had the down comforter on the bed when I arrived, and I had a devil of a time trying to get a knife so that I could slice some cheese when I wanted to have dinner in my room one night) but the room was clean and the front desk staff very helpful. My chief complaint--and it's big-- was my bathroom. I had stayed here before so I knew the room was small, and in many old fashioned hotels the bathrooms are not very big, but THIS WAS OUTRAGEOUS. The shower was so small I could not turn around under the water without being up against the curtain. I do not see how an average sized adult male could shower in there. For a 5 night stay, this was VERY uncomfortable. 3/4 baths are NOT mentioned on their website. It was a case of "stick it to the Expedia Guest." I doubt I would ever go back.
“Convenience to shopping good”
Room was extremely hot. I reserved king bed, got a double.
“The surprise GEM!”
We loved our stay at the Handlery. The room we were given was sooo large it actually felt like a two room suite compared to most in the city. The kids had their own area and we had ours, each with our own tv's. The hotel was very quiet and a perfect location for food, shopping and the tree lighting. The pool was actually heated too at the end of November. The hotel is older though but well kept. It actually has character and some unique things to explore for kids. The only drawbacks...small bathroom and the view. We hardly spent time in the room though so I really didn't mind. Our room number I will keep secret though because I will request this room on every return visit:) We were very happy and we will be back.
“would definately book again at the Handlery when in San Francisco!!!”
the Handlery is very CLEAN and EXCELLENT location!! everything within "walking distance" , nightclubs, union square, restaurants/coffee, shopping, china town, the trolley and F train that both take you to Fisherman's Wharf and boat tours for Alcatraz and Golden Gate bridge also a bus stop that takes you to Candlestick Park aswell, all this so easly accessable from the Handlery!!!!
“Great hotel great location”
The room size and location were great - I had heard the hotel rooms in San Francisco were small but ours was big enough for both of us and our two teenaged sons. The room we had faced the pool area, which I would recommend if possible because the city is very noisy. The service was very good and all the staff extremely friendly. When we asked about a corkscrew they immediately sent someone up to open our wine and also provided us with two wineglasses. You can't get much closer to Union Square and the shopping in the neighbourhood.
“Great location but very tiny rooms.”
The location is fantastic. This hotel is right smack in the heart of union square. Excellent for those who plan to do a little shopping while on their trip. However, the rooms are a bit cramped so be prepared. We didn't spend much time in our room though so it wasn't a huge concern. Not far from cable car and bus stops. I would definitely stay there again.
