“Comfortable hotel with a lot of character and great location”

The wireless network didn't work and there was no ethernet cable--also there was just one computer in the main lobby. Other than that, I liked the retro feel of the hotel and all of the photos in the hallways. The location is ideal, near the coast, restaurants and other attractions, and not far from other parts of San Diego.

“Very attractive hotel in a great location”

We enjoyed our stay very much. Free parking is very close. If we had realized that the first night, we wouldn't have spent $22 for valet parking.

“2nd time around not as good”

Stayed her with my daughters last year and it was perfect- great room and large bathroom. Came back with my husband and kids - the room was smaller, the bathroom was 1/3rd the size( that is NOT an exageration) - I paid for 4 people in the room - we only got 3 towels. Sad after having such a great first trip. We will most likely be returning to La Jolla, but not this hotel.

“Great location & service”

Staff was very helpful and we were near all the shops, great restaurants, and the shore. Only issue was that I could hear the guy in the next room over who was only talking at a regular volume. The is mainly caused by the door they have between the two rooms (so some people can book two adjoining rooms). The guy left after a day an luckily there was no one else that moved in, but I could see it being a common issue.

Area recommendations
La Jolla and Del Mar are cute towns with great shopping and dining options, as well as being close to the beach.

“Book it for location, not personal service”

Ideal LaJolla village location, walkable to shops, restaurants, scenic coastal walk along various types of beaches. Beautiful hotel but seemed to be light on staff... Guest rooms very late to be ready for many. Probably would look elsewhere for lack of professional service. Just expected more.

“Would go back to Grande Colonial, perfect spot, people friendly”

Excellent, quainte hotel, gives feeling of home. The staff very friendly and accommodating. The only complaint I have is that the pool area is not serviced with staff. Had to try to find someone to take food and drink order, once delivered no one showed up to see if we wanted more drinks. The other is that the bar closes at 10:30p.m. on a Saturday night...too early.

Area recommendations
Lajolla , is perfect spot, on the water, restaurants and shops within walking distance and also would recommend Carlsbad for same reasons, very quaint town, not too commercialized.
When to go
Definitely would not go in June again, weather was cool, needed a jacket everyday and no sun, unless you go inland, was told May is the same. They call it June Gloom .
Dining
Restuarants are great, would hightly recommend Aroma for breakfast, lunch and even dinner, staff great and food is fresh. The Brick for a fast breakfast. Dinner would highly recommend Vigilucci, a little expensive but good way to treat yourself. Brentini's is awsome, great friendly staff with great food, and moderately priced. Everyone suggested George on the Cove, went but would not recommend unless you're a light eater and like fusion cooking, overly priced, atmosphere wonderful view of the water, but very expensive. Suggest go for lunch or dessert just for the experience. Would not recommend Dolce Vita, set in a cute alley way with shops, staff not accommodating and with an attitude, called for reservations 3 times and when we got there no reservations, food OK not great/

“Great location!”

I was very satisfied with the hotel but I found that some ares in the cleanliness area need to improve. The carpet in my room was very worn and not vacuumed. Papers were not picked up off the floor and I did not get a bathroom rug until the second last day. The location was excellent due to its nearness to the boutiques, restaurants, cafes and the beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful and always tried to please. Overall we had a wonderful stay at the Grande Colonial. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

“A lovely boutique hotel”

This hotel was absolutely beautiful. Built in 1913 with history and a central location in La Jolla. It was a jewel with impeccable service, decor and views of the ocean. Can't beat it! We will stay there again.

Area recommendations
Stay on Prospect Street. You can walk the village of La Jolla, walk to the beach, caves and beaches full of seals and wildlife.. The most beautiful spot in Southern California.

“Excellent location; friendly staff; small room”

The Grande Colonial was as advertised. The location is excellent, with stores and restaurants right outside and the ocean just 2-3 minutes away by foot. Front desk and valet staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome. The hotel is a boutique hotel and has been around for a while but has been kept well, with tasteful, contemporary furnishings. The only downside is the size of the room, which would be expected with a hotel such as this. The bathroom is quite crammed and there was really no place to put toiletries. The room itself was sufficient but also a little tight for three people.
