“Budget Accomodation in San Diego”
This is a Hostel, not a Hotel. This is clear when you arrive, but could be clearer during online booking. It has shared bathroom facilities and the rooms are small. Thats the negative stuff over with... It is well located for the Gaslamp quarter, Westfield plaza and Little Italy... The staff are friendly and the Grand Central Cafe serves a great breakfast. If you want to stay in the very centre of SD on a budget, then this could be a good option for you.
“downtown surprise”
For those travelers who don't need a posh room, this is the place. Location is the best. Plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby. Many people would be put off by the community bathrooms. They are, however, complete, private bathrooms with sink, toilet, and shower in individual locked rooms. I would recommend this hotel to any budget concerned traveler.
“Not impressed.”
I booked this hotel with a package, first time business trip in CA. I was scared. Did not feel safe. No bathroom in te room. No parking. Very primitive room. The elevator was scarey. I was treated very nicely when I asked to change to a different room that I felt a little more safe in I'm sorry but I would not stay there again.
“Would never go back”
This place was horrible. The rooms were nothing like the pictures on Expedia or the 500 West website. The private room was not much bigger than 8x10, more like a VERY small single dorm room. No air conditioning and with the windows open it is very noisy early morning. The bathrooms were horrendous. They always smelled very bad and you definitely need flip flops to wear in the old concrete showers. It was hard walking down the hallway to our room and seeing the Westin's rooftop pool out the hallway window- and seeing where we were staying. It was very old, not "modern" like the web says. We seriously considered leaving and moving to another hotel, but figured we would stick it out for 2 nights and save that money for gaslamp (or something). If you need to use the bathroom, I suggest going down to the lobby and using those ones; their nicer. All in all, I would never return here. There are MUCH better options close by within a decent price range.
“15 minute walk to San Diego Convention Center”
Its a hostel/converted YMCA/reminds me of my college dorm. Within a mile from the airport. Very friendly and helpful service staff. They'll loan you a hair dryer:) Bathrooms/rooms were very clean but I opted to wear flip-flops. They provide containers for recyclables! Great coffee shops nearby "Specialties" and "Newstand". I dont recall issues with late nite noise, but if you are a light sleeper I would assume you prepare pre-travel. The halls from time to time smelled of urine?? But I guess you cant control guests... Given a situation of event timing and budget I would stay here again.
“Never again!”
The rooms were small and the bathrooms were located down the hall. I don't recommend staying there. It was a waste of money!
“San Diego's Experiment in Austerity”
I chose this hotel (which is more like a hostel with private rooms) because I wanted to be off the trolley line in the cheapest place I could find that wasn't a heroin den. 500 West totally hit the bill. You enter to an expansive lobby with comfy seating for the times you just want to chill in public space. I had a small room with twin bed and no TV. (There's a community TV on the second floor if you need a fix) The room was definitely small with a desk, bed, and armoire it's only accouterments. The bed was super comfy, however, which is all I really wanted from the room. The shared bathrooms were fine and they were cleaned daily. The staff responded with "certainly's" to all my requests for extra blankets, towels, etc. The hotel also has a modern "smart" key locking system which made me fee secure that my stuff would still be there when I got home. For the money and location (cheap, downtown, on trolley line), I was very happy there, but then I appreciate austerity - I find it relaxing. By the way, the restaurant that adjoins the hotel is crap, don't eat there. I tried it twice for breakfast and both times got under-cooked eggs and cold bacon, although the hash browns were good... Actually, most all of the food I tried in San Diego was sub par, regardless of how much I paid. Lounge Burger in Little Italy was a standout though.
“DISGUSTED”
booked this hotel (hostel) online and the pictures are deciving to say the least!! I WOULD NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN!! at first glance we didnt think it would be to horrible.. we headed up to our room.. the elevator sounded like it was about to break at any minute, we arrived to our floor we couldnt help but notice large amounts of stains on the floor and a horrible smell (that lasted the 3 days we were there) we got to our room and were amazed on how small it was.. litteraly not even 10ft x 10ft.. so crowded that 2 people ran into eachother every time we tried to move around!! TV was no larger than 12in. the bathrooms were kept DECENTLY clean.. i advise bringing a pair of flip flops to wear in the shower so you dont end up with a disease!! one eve. we were heading out to eat and 2 men were in the lobby calling around to stay somewhere else because they found DEAD COCKROACHES in their room!! i didnt find any bugs in our room but i would NEVER walk in that place without shoes!! at night time the outside turns into skid-row.. bums everywhere and not nice ones either!! no air conditioning and a very noisy area, the bed was like sleeping on bricks &the pillows seemed to be more like a sheet with cotton balls stuffed inside.. we paid extra for the "city view" room.. not a city view at all.. i dont see how it could have been from only being on the 4th floor.. we had a view of an actual nice motel where we will stay next time!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!! YOU WILL BE BEYOND DISSAPOINTED!!!!!
“If your broke it Works”
The place will work if you have a budget crunch and are single. Would not go if I had children due to the bathrooms not being located in the room.
“College dorm room style "hotel"”
I would say that 500 West Hotel is a youth hostel or a college dorm and not a hotel. There is TV in the room and free wireless internet. The rooms are really cheap for that area. The shared bathroom is very basic, has soap and shampoo dispensers mounted on the wall for shower. Make sure to bring a pair of flip flops to wear in the bathroom because Friday night, there will be people throwing up in the toilet, on the floor of the bathroom and finding a clean shower/bathroom becomes difficult. The rooms have no AC and has a radiator that doesn't work. Wet/damp clothing or towels will not dry if you hang them in the room. Opening the window might work, but it will be loud if your room has a window facing the courtyard. There is a giant industrial fan/vent on the roof of a neighboring building, so there is a constant noise in the background. The noise isn't so bad with the window closed, during the day time or when the TV is on. However, at night, once things quiet down, it becomes noticeably loud. I had trouble sleeping at night. Ear plugs are highly recommended. Parking is difficult around there. There is a parking garage directly behind the building. It is about twenty dollars to park overnight. Street parking is free after 6pm but watch out for street cleaning days. The hotel doesn't provide drinking water, so buy drinks/snacks from Seven-Eleven a the end of the block. There are a few homeless people camped on the street corner every night.
