“Excellent value and location in the high rent district”
I loved this hotel for several reasons - cleaniness and updated presentation of the entire facility; location: three city blocks to Riverwalk & Alamo Plaza where tourist transportation hubs, two blocks to RiverCenter Macy's (on way to Plaza), Rte 281 just out the door so easy find from airport and driving to many attractions; public transportation to the hub was just steps away (a key factor in summer, not so much during cooler months); free parking (beware of most downtown hotels fees $30/day); business office w/Internet & printing capability; very helpful, friendly staff. I found nothing second rate about this hotel and I can be hard to please when it comes to accommodations. I cannot comment on breakfast other than to say it is available for $3 or so and hot/cold food offered. I visited SA Nov 25-28, 2011 to attend the Holiday River & Lighting Ceremony, a fabulous event during which the Riverwalk is lit up for the Christmas season and decorated barges sail along the river with all manner of seasonal cheer & music. Prior to this event, the city sponsored wonderful musical entertainment in the Plaza as well as lighting up the city's tree. I highly recommend a visit during this time.
Area recommendations
Stay near the RiverWalk no matter where you plan to visit in SA. It is simply beautiful, a great atmosphere, alive after dark. SA was easy to get around by car though transportation geared to tourists is outstanding; a great feature and another reason to choose SA for a vacation not to speak of year round fun events.
If you love nature do not miss: Botanical Gardens; Brackenridge Park home to Japanese Tea Gardens, the Zoo, trails; the Riverwalk south & north away from the center hub. Each is pure delight.
If you enjoy art, do not miss: SA Art Museum (not only are the collections superb but the building itself, a former brewery, has been transformed into a spectacular showcase with attention paid to the finest details). The McNay House, a mansion build in the 20s on the most gorgeous piece of real estate in SA, is home to a fabulous art collection. Again, the house and gardens are as much art as the collections.
The Guenther House was the founders of Pioneer Flour Mill located on the grounds of the still functioning plant. It is tiny considering their wealth but nicely presented along with a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. Located in the same area is the Blue Star Art colony.
If you want to dive onto Texas ancestory history, the Institute of Texan Cultures would be of interest.
The Witte features Texas natural resources/wild life spiffed up with special exhibitions. A great learning center for children.
When to go
The River Holiday Boat Parade and Lighting ceremony is spectacular. When the switch is hit just prior to the floats sailing by, the River Walk transforms into a spectacular show. Held Thanksgiving weekend.
SA celebrates life all year round with fiestas and parades. Check their calendar for the type of event that tickles your fancy.
