“Ultra-convenient location, will re-visit”

Very small, unpretentious, friendly, historic hotel right above a restaurant in the midst of the Old Town. The location is quiet and extremely convenient for visiting the Alt Stadt and all its sights,(and there are many). Bedrooms are characterful, rather than luxurious with small, functional bathrooms. In our bedroom we had a useful table and sitting area. The very friendly receptionist multi-tasks by running the breakfast room, dispensing excellent coffee and ensuring supplies of bread, eggs, yoghurt etc. She and her afternoon colleague are fluent in several languages and are very helpful in dispensing local information and phoning to check the availability of tickets for events. The lack of air-conditioning was not a problem in sunny, splendid October. The independent restaurant downstairs serves tasty Austrian food with many locals eating there. Provided you don't expect english television channels and luxury products in the bathroom,(or to both get in the bathroom at the same time), the friendliness of the staff and great location should win you over.

Area recommendations
Der Alt Stadt (Old Town) is pedestrianised and constructed on a very interesting pattern with alleys lined with shops linking the wider roads. If shopping is your thing you will find lots of interesting shops. The Residenz state apartments, near the cathedral and the nearby funicular up to the castle are not to be missed. The castle is well worth spending an afternoon on as it is very extensive with wonderful views over the town and surrounding countryside.

“Friendly service, great location”

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and were very happy with the friendly and personal service. Location was perfect (heart of the old town). Room was small and a little lop sided, but understandable given the history of the building. Room was clean and tidy.

“Stay here”

Hotel Goldene Ente is located on a narrow street in the heart of Old Salzburg. It is run by Frau Ulrike who is friendly, charming, multilingual and extremely helpful. My father and I stayed here for a week while visiting the Salzburg Festival and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. The room was up-to-date and comfortable (an air conditioner would have been nice to have on a couple of warm nights but these are rare in Salzburg) and the bathroom spacious and modern. The included breakfast was copious and fresh. The wireless internet connection worked perfectly. On top of all that, they have a restaurant on the ground floor that is charming and holds its own for traditional Salzburg fare. There are also a few tables on the street for dining and/or drinking. A plus for beer lovers: they have Pilsner Urquelle on tap. Overall, one of the best hotel experiences I've had.

Area recommendations
Old (Alt) Salzburg is the part of the city you probably picture from the Sound of Music. It is very picturesque with the cathedral, a few other churches and many streets and squares to explore, surrounded on three sides by high cliffs, on one of which sits the famous Salzburg Castle (Festung). The fourth side is the Salzach River which divides the old city from the (comparatively) new. Some of the old city's other attractions include Mozart's birth house (now a fascinating museum about his family and early life), the Residence (the palace where the prince-bishops who ruled Salzburg in the 17th and 18th centuries lived), a "museum of the modern" on the Monchsberg that overlooks the city, several smaller museums and, of course, the music venues of the Salzburg Festival which runs every summer during the months of July and August and features superb performances of Mozart's music as well as that of other composers. Food in Old Salzburg restaurants tends to be traditional Austrian which is hearty and delicious but somewhat monotonous and not exactly haute cuisine. However, there are several restaurants near the old city that serve truly excellent food, usually for steep prices. Shopping in the Old City is richly varied but you will not find many bargains here.
When to go
The Festival takes place in July and August and it's packed with tourists during that time. If you're not interested in the Festival, you should go in May-June or September-October. Those who plan to ski at one of the Austrian or Swiss resorts could spend a couple of charming days here in the winter.
Getting there
The fastest way from the US is to fly to Munich and take a train. There is a local train (S1 or S8) from the Munich airport to the main train station that costs 10 euros and takes about 45 minutes. From there it's about a 2 hour train ride to Salzburg through charming Bavarian countryside.
Getting around
In the old city you can walk everywhere, including the most interesting parts of the new city across the river.
Must see
In addition to the music festival: the Cathedral. the Residence, Mozart's birth house (Geburtshaus), the house the Mozart family's occupied when Papa was working for the Prince Archbishop (called the Mozart Wohnhaus), the Castle (Festung Salzburg).
Shopping
There is plentiful and varied shopping in the charming streets of the old city. It's heavily tourist-oriented so bargains are rare.
Dining
Most restaurants serve traditional Austrian fare which is hearty and delicious but limited in scope. There are several excellent restaurants near the old city that serve really excellent food. Prices tend to be high.
Events and shows
The Salzburg Music Festival takes place every year from late June to early September. Is is one of the world's great music events and attracts the best musicians, singers and directors from around the world. The performances include operas, symphonic music, chamber music and vocal ensembles. Mozart is naturally emphasized but many other composers are also performed. Tickets should be ordered (online) by the prior January in order to have the best selection, but some tickets are available last-minute at a few ticket sales offices around town. Tickets are expensive unless you are used to New York prices and even so will be towards the high end. The performances we saw, however, were well worth the price.
Outdoors or beach
There are several places to take walks in the immediate vicinity of Salzburg. We went to Maria Plain, a Baroque pilgimage church a short bus ride (bus 21) from downtown and a brief but pretty walk uphill through a deep forest. The view from the church is spectacular, overlooking the valley and the city with the castle in the background.

“Personal Service and Comfort in the Heart of Salzburg”

The best thing about this hotel is the manager, a personable lady who goes to great lengths to welcome her guests, and see to their needs. The building is a very old one, which adds to its charm. My room was spacious, and had a nice, modern bathroom. A small terrace at the top of the building was a plus, a place to sit surrounded by pots of flowers, and views of neighboring roof gardens. I would easily return here...just a nice place to relax and be low keyed for a few days.

“Location, historic building”

For a unique experience in Salzburg, choose to stay at The Goldener Ente. Must understand that this is not a hotel, but a Gasthaus. The building is 700 years old, tall and narrow. Small elevator. Stone stairs.Rooms small--three of them are set up for families. Bathrooms modern, but showers spray water out onto floor (plenty of towels). Wall soap dispensers harder to use. Great breakfast. Lots of personality.

“A good hotel”

The receptionist and morning breakfast host were very nice. The parking was a bit of a pain, but it was an easy walk back (I think a lot of hotels probably have the same thing - just ask in advance so you know!) The room was nice though aged. I liked the canopy around the bed! The only major problem was that my husband and I wanted to take showers in the evening before going out to dinner, and both nights there was no hot water! We complained both times, and I guess there were other complaints as well, and so they had to turn the water heater off and on (??) Water was back to normal in the morning. The breakfast was really nice, and the location is perfect. Also, the restaurant downstairs has delicious food!

“Hope to Visit again”

Ulrika was so wonderful. She arranged to have us picked up at the hotel for a tour we had booked. She recommended a wonderful restaurant for dinner. I hope we can visit Salzburb and Hotel Goldenen Ente again.

“just okay...”

we were not blown away by the goldene ente. the rooms were quite outdated. our bathroom had no shower head attachment, so you had to take a sitting bath every time. the TV didn't work. no wireless. stuffy old furniture. on the plus side, the location is great and the reception very friendly. it's an okay hotel. just don't expect anything spectacular.

“Wonderful Old-World Feel in Updated Building”

We stayed in this hotel one night in July 2009 and were pleasantly surprised by the location - right off the main square in the old part of the city. It was an excellent starting point for all of the big sites we'd planned to see. We were also pleasantly surprised by the fact that this building had an elevator, something we had not encountered at many other places during our travels! The rooms had all been updated, but the character of the building was still evident throughout the hotel. The only drawback for us was that we had arrived in town during record-setting hot temperatures(97 degrees +)and there was not air-conditioning in the rooms. Being on the 4th floor of this older building made for an uncomfortable night, but the rest of the accomodations made for a wonderful stay. In addition, the hostesses were charming and welcoming, and very helpful during our visit.

“Small, quiet hotel with perfect location”

This hotel is in the ultimate location for oldtown Salzburg. We were just a few minutes walk from every major site in the old town. The restaurant below was also excellent with friendly service. The hotel itself is small, quiet and the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I plan on returning to Salzburg soon and I will definitely book a room at this hotel. The rooms are a little small by American standards, but I spent very little time in the room, so I did not mind one bit.

Traveller's tip
The Getreidegasse (Salzburg's famous shopping street) is only a 3 minute walk from this hotel.
