“Hawthorne Salem”

Old style hotel, centrally located, minutes from Logan, great restaurant and bar, well staffed, polite staff, large parking lot, large free parking lot, clear driving directions on web pages. Clean spacious room - even the boutiique room was adequate. Give it a try - you'll not have regrets.

“Great Local”

The hotel was in a great location. I never used my car the whole time in Salem. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They suggested places to eat and which museums were worth seeing. I think Salem itself was a very friendly town; most locals were very helpful.

Area recommendations
The Peabody Essex Museum was definetly worh checing out. They had a house transported from China ondisplay.

“Great Location”

An old hotel, but it was def part of the experience. Room was clean, a little small, but a very pleasent stay. The location was key...walking distance to everything, and trolly stop too. Its worth the extra money to stay in Salem. If you are thinking about stayting outside of Salem...DON'T! The traffic in and out of there sucks. And the streets aren't the easiest to navagate. Looking forward to our trip back next year!

“Tiny rooms!”

My husband and I rented a room with a single queen bed. This was the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in in my life. The room was basically only big enough for the bed. By the time we put our luggage in the room we had to rearrange the other furniture (a small desk and a chair) to be able to shut the door to our room. The bathroom was equally as small. Would not go back.

“"Very impressed"”

We were very impressed with this lovely historic hotel. Upon check-in, the clerk gave us an area map and described points of interest. The front desk and dining staff were friendly and courteous. The hotel offers formal dining and a less formal pub. We opted for the pub twice (lunch and dinner) and were delighted by the quality of the meals and the price. The location of the hotel is across from Salem Common and is within walking distance of the waterfront, the Peabody-Essex Museum, the Essex Street pedestrian mall and many more must-see spots in Salem. The room was small but that did not bother us in the least - it was very clean, quiet and comfortable. I would most definitely return.

“Good place”

I had a single room on the third floor. The bathroom and shower were in separate stalls with a door to both which was odd. The window looked onto a noisy roof. It was an ok bed-the fitted sheet was on upside down. The Tavern/bar on the first floor were great and the location was perfect.

Area recommendations
Stay downtown-there is lots to do.
Outdoors or beach
Go north to Rockport and Gloucester for great beaches-Good Harbor, Pebble Beach, Singing Beach

“Hawthorne Hotel - Great location and history”

This is a very historic and well maintained location. The Hawthorne is walking distance to many of the attractions in Salem, and is a very pleasant spot. Only problem we had with this visit was the size of the room. Some rooms are very small! If you are claustrophobic you may have problems with the shower stall. There are larger rooms, and they have a lot of charm as well -- but also higher price.

Area recommendations
Salem is best seen by foot from a hotel in the historic centre.

“Old world charm”

My two-night stay lived up to my expectations. Room was small but charming -shower but no tub. Staff was pleasant and helpful - except waiters in formal dining room a bit snooty.

Area recommendations
The downtown area where the hotel is located is within walking distance of most attractions.
Getting around
The downtown area where the hotel is located is within walking distance of most attractions. There is also a reasonable priced trolley which makes stops (with informative narration) around the touristry area of the city.
Must see
The House of Seven Gables is fun, especially if you have recently read the book. Skip the Witch Dungeon, but take a stroll down historic Chestnut Street and visit the Phillip's House $. A very pretty town.

“Very pleasant experience.”

Authentic seaport experience. Great place to vacation for a few days. Hotel was a nice change from the sterile, contemporary hotels one experiences today.Really enjoyed our stay.

“Excellent Hotel spoilt by noisy Air Conditioning.”

One of the "Historic Hotels of America". A very beautiful building, with plenty of character, delightful period decor, and excellent service, situated next to Salem Common and within easy walking distance of all the Salem "Witch" attractions. The whole experience being spoilt by the fact that our room on the 4th floor (3rd UK) faced into the central well of the square building, and that contained a massive central air conditioniing plant, and kitchen extractor which operated all night and made sleep very difficult. Not too much of an issue for a 1 night stay, but would certainly be a problem for longer.

Other
Essential to contact Hotel and request a room which does not face the central well, or at least is on a high floor.
