“"Very conveniently situated hotel with very friendly staff"”

Although we booked a "Classic Room" for my wife and I, it was no way a room for 2 people. Room was very small, there was even one side table (insead of 2).Other than this everything else was very niceespecially the decor.Staff was ery friendly especialy those at the reception.

“Completely Disappointed”

This Hotel is supposed to be one of the best in Rome. We were barely greeted at check inn by Stefano who apparently had other things to do and made us wait to begin the check inn process (not very common at 5 star hotels!) the process ended with him accompanying us to our room on the 1 first floor of this elegant but in extreme need of renovation hotel. He showed us in. I guess he was expecting some kind of Tip I wasn't going to give for the un proper way in which we were "welcomed" at check inn. Having only one night in Rome, we quickly left the hotel to visit our favorite places in this beautiful city, and did not finish to check the rest of the room out. When we came back late at night, we found a very dirty small bathroom with dirt in the corners of the shower, mud came out of the bidet...etc. This is a 5 star hotel? not a chance! Since our flight was scheduled for morning departure, we headed for the breakfast buffet offered to us at check in. What a terrible experience! the way the food was displayed, the runny eggs without someone tending the look of the food and the way the whole buffet looked.... really undeserving of half a star. My wife and I, have stayed at less expensive hotels in Rome and in cities throughout Europe and received service far better than we received here. I really regret having stayed here having equal or better places to stay in Rome. I left a handwritten note to the Hotel Manager explaining our experience. We still have not herd from them.

“Getting a little old. Best feature is it's location.”

I have stayed at d'InGhilterra before a few years ago and liked it. This trip however, I noticed the paint was flaking off in the bathroom in our room, I had to ask for a bathrobe which, while it was delivered promptly, was a little tatty. The hotel front desk staff was a little grumpy (except for Paolo who is great and has been there for years). Frankly, this should be a four star hotel NOT a five star. I suspect it keeps it's five star designation because of it's long history.

“Rooms didn't feel 5 star.”

I stayed 15 months ago in Venice at Christmas in a 5 star hotel (St Angelo) on a similar Expedia hotel/flight break. The rooms in the d'Inghilterra in Rome were not a patch on that and felt more 3 star than 5. It possibly ticks the boxes technically; TV in room, own toilet and shower, 24 hr service, doorman/bell boys etc but the rooms were small and gloomy and the shower cubicle was rather low budget. The price deal overall and the location made it OK but it was defintiely not the same value for money as Venice. Our room maid was excellent and there was an excellent "fine dining" restaurant ; pricey but no more than you would expect. Our guide book said expect lower quality for more money in Rome. Perhaps this is an example.

Area recommendations
I climbed the steps of the "Wedding Cake" (the Vittoriano; the moument to Vittorio Emmanuele II of Savoy). Having been to Rome several times i had nevertheless missed this. What an asotnishing view from the upper levels with a very nice terrace cafe, enclosed against the weather. I saw the excavations of the expanded forum area near Trajan's column and the rest of the old forum as never before, down to the Collosseum. Do try to book Collesseum (or Vatican, etc) a day beforehand, to guarantee entry time. We wanted a guided tour to the collosseum but went there on the day. The (later) available timing meant we kiled time in the forum. We really wanted to do Collosseum, then Forum then Capitoline museums finishing with the wedding cake, but were too tired after endless queueing. I went back the next day to the wedding cake, but my wife missed it, nuring a sore knee. She would not have done so had we not got the timings wrong.
Dining
We came across a series of food-oriented outlets including cook shop and bar called Gusto near the Piazza Augusto Imperatore, not far from the Ponte Cavour just off via del Corso. One of them, the Osteria, (entrance on via di Frezza, off the del Corso) ) serves wine and an all you can eat "tapas" (or Roman equivalent) for a modest sum from around 6-ish pm. It was a somewhat early but very cheap meal for the evening, We npoticed onme or two places subsqequently which offered an early eveing "happy hour" but where the focus was wine and food, not simply cheap booze..

“Nevr again”

What a disappointment! Our room (259) hardly met the standard of a 3-Star-Hotel. Furnitures might have already been used by Hemmingway/Liszt. No radio, no clock unless you turn on the TV, mini roomsafe that does not fit a laptop (5 stars?). The hotel seems to have plumbing problems - water from sink drains after minutes only (reported on arrival, no action). The shower is 2.5x2.5 feet and does open only half way (hits toilet). Dark light and no make-up mirror. Anythink positive? Yes, the location.

“Used to be my favorite hotel in Rome”

I have stayed at this hotel 4 times, 3 of which were highly favorable... this time, the hotel just was not up to par.. the room was "tired", our friend's room looked like a CSI crime scene.. and they were changed into a room that was so small their knees touched the wall when they were sitting in the bathroom.. I am embarrassed since I raved about the hotel on our other stays. No more! Need new hotel in Rome now.... what a shame

Traveller's tip
stay someplace else...... great location, no longer great hotel...

“Nice hotel comfortable - small rooms”

Sylvia & Allesandro at the front desk are very helpful - ask for them. The hotel is nice but the rooms and baths are very small. The beds are comfortable but the rugs in the rooms need replacing they are stained. Breakfast is pricey - eat elsewhere. The location is great - close to Spanish steps and in the middle of all the expensive stores. Unfortunately the euro compared to dollar makes shopping unreasonable. Close to metro which takes your right to Vatican and the colliseum. easy to get around. Unfortunately Italys 5 star does not compare to the US. More like a 4 star

Traveller's tip
Try to research dining. We did not find the food in Rome to be all that great. we did hit one restaurant if you make a right out the hotel and a right at the corner walk 1/4 mile or so until you can't go any further. Right near a louis vuitton there is an excellent restaurant with homeade cannoloni which was out of this world. pas on the gelato it is cheaper on the streets

“Not impressed”

In the midst of a July heatwave in Rome, the hotel had little or no air conditioning. After complaining, we were grudgingly given another room with the excuse that the air conditioning was only not working in our room. Three rooms (and three nights) later it was clear that the air wasn't working at all. The management was not at all helpful about this and wanted to charge us for the extra room (even though we were told we needn't move our belongings until the next morning on that first night). Also, there was confusion about whether breakfast was or wasn't included in the room rate. After being told yes, the charges for all of the breakfasts we had taken were on the bill and would not be taken off.) Front desk had an "attitude". This is not a 4 star hotel.
