We have stayed at this location multiple times, at different times of the year and we have never been disappointed. If you are looking for all-inclusive at twice the rate, consider a larger outfit. If you are comfortable choosing your own dining arrangements either on Concierge recommendation or just from exploring 5th Avenue, you won't be unhappy. Breakfast is very reasonable at this hotel averaging less than local restaurants. They have a happy hour of which we did not partake because we spend most of the time on the beach at their primary Beach Club called Mamita's. Ask about alternative beach clubs based on your preferences. Mamita's food and drinks can be expensive. If you have specific food requirements such as vegetarian, make your requests known. Most places will accommodate you even if not directly on their menu. Hacienda Paradise now has room service, too. Adventuresome? Inquire about their other hotels in the area and their amenities. We explored a newly acquired hotel in Holbox (pronounced Holbosh) that was very nice as part of another excursion. We can't say enough about the staff! These folks are professional care givers every step of the way. Chef Jorge R. and his staff are wonderful and the Concierge Jorge made all our arrangements without missing a beat. Front desk personnel will become your best friends and the Hotel crew members work non-stop to please you. We've been to many locations in Mexico; this is by far our favorite place to stay!
Area recommendations
This city is tourist friendly despite News Media sensationalism. If you speak only English, you can easily get by with most attractions and restaurants. If you can speak even minimal Spanish with the people of Mexico, you will make their day as they listen to your dialect and pronunciation. 5th Ave is the main shopping / restaurant district, but ask around if you are more adventuresome. Some of the least expensive entertainment and food are outside of 5th Ave. within a block or 2. There are tourist Police, Federal Police and more keeping everyone safe. We've been visiting Playa Del Carmen and Cancun for 10 years at least once each year, and never any issue. Don't be surprised by the merchants. They will ask you if you want "drugs" of every nature, quite on the sly. Resist. It could be an entrapment. Know your sources before saying "yes". Same for "Cuban Cigars". Some are not real. Merchants like to barter for price despite stated signage. Never offer less than 50% of current price, it's an insult. I'm always happy if I can acquire a nice piece for 60-70% of price. Some restaurants automatically add tips to the bill. Look for the word "Propina" on your receipt. Most places will accept USD or Mexican Peso at the on-going rate of the day. We usually stick to USD personally.
