“Good for honeymooners...”

Great location, great concept and look of the hotel. Room was a bit too small for me, but since Playa is not a place you want to stay cramped up in your room, then you will have no problem. Other that, was extremely satisfied with the stay at Mosquito Beach.

“New home away from home!”

Love the atmosphere at Mosquito Beach. Was able to walk 20 paces in one directio to the beach and a half block in the other direction to restaurants, shops and nightlife. Suite was more like a large room than a true "suite", but still great accomodations for the price. Will definitely go back, but may try a larger room on the next visit. Bathroom was very unique - square toilet, cool shower. Room could use a bit more optional lighting, a dresser (or place to unpack your things) and maybe a mirror.

“The hotel staff was very accomodating and catered to every need....including an umbrella for rain!”

The Mosquito Beach Hotel was very accomodating. The wait staff was friendly and service was excellent. The management personnel was exceptional.....visiting the tables and talking with guests and making everyone feel at home.

“CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK”

This was the second time at Mosquito Beach Hotel and just as great as the first time. The associates were charming and very helpful. We plan to go back to Mosquito Beach as soon as we are able. The beaches are beautiful, the people are wonderful, and we highly recommend shopping in Playa Del Carmen.

Area recommendations
We highly recommend Playa Del Carmen. We have been to Cancun three times and Playa Del Carmen twice and like them both but prefer Playa because of the shopping, beaches, and unique blend of influence. We are hoping that New Orleans restores the direct flight from New Orleans to Cancun so we can go more often. Go as soon as you can! They are waiting!
Outdoors or beach
The water in Cancun and Playa Del Carmen is the most beautiful we have ever seen. The colors are incredibly clear and blue and we recommend the couples parasailing so you can get a good look of the beach and the magnificent view of the water. Walking around the town is convenient from Mosquito beach hotel as well and very easy to walk to from the hotel.

“Just right for us”

The location on the beach was perfect. The wait staff at the beach were friendly and attentive. The hotel was very open to letting us change rooms to a more quiet location. Be aware that during some parts of the day that Police do not let taxis and vans cross 5th Ave. to reach the hotel. You may have to walk 2 blocks.

“Poor beach service - not impressed dark rooms, the only thing this hotel has going is it's location.”

Great location, so not worth it! Yes the rooms were dark and the toilet's funny - but we knew this from the reviews! The rooms don't have mirrors - no good for getting ready to partying or out for dinner! Pool area is nice and the beach is just a walk down a path. Forget getting drinks or food from beach staff at hotel, they seem to ignore you, we had to ask for drinks and food over aqnd over before anything arrived. We ended purcahsing soft drinks from local shop as the bar staff at hotel were not interested and didn't seem to care, they were rude. Reception staff and mangement were helpful and polite. The houskeeping were lovely! Met other tourists who said illusions hotel opposite so much better rooms are airy, twice the size and half the price! Hotels situated in a pedestrian area, you don't always get picked up at the hotel for excursions taxis to airport etc.

“mosquito beach”

We read a million reviews of every hotel in the area and to be honest we were not sure what to expect when we got to playa del carmen but I am happy to say that Mosquito Beach was very nice. It's modern, clean, the breakfast is delicious, and the beach is a stones throw away. We had read that the rooms were small but there was plenty of room for the 2 of us, our clothes, and my guitar. It was quiet at night and the staff was very helpful. Playa del carmen is lovely but it is certainly a major tourist destination. There are very nice restaurants, hotel and resorts, great beaches, and people from all over the world. But if I could do it again I think that I would stay in Tulum. Tulum is also a popular destination but we saw fewer hotels, fewer people, and the beaches were breath taking! It just seemed like a more secluded, quiet, and romantic spot. The ruins of Tulum and Coba are very nearby and its easy to get to Playa and other destinations by car. Either way you can't go wrong. Playa is exciting and bustling with tourism Tulum is more laid back. Have a great trip!!!

Getting there
If you want to see the ruins, go snorkeling, see the area, etc....rent a car. We got one at the airport and drove ourselves everywhere. Parking was no problem in Playa del Carmen. We parked on the street with no problem. If you can't find street parking for some reason there are parking lots that cost $10 US a day.
Must see
The ruins at Coba are Amazing! The ruins at Tulum are great too but you aren't allowed to get very close to any of the buildings. Coba you can see all the structures and climb up the pyramids! Rent a bike (or take the bike taxi) to see everything! It's a lot of fun! Also I would recommend getting a guide. The ruins are fascinating and you'll want to know more about the buildings and Mayan culture.

“Darkest rooms on the planet!”

Dark brown walls, floors and inadequate lighting made this room about as inviting as a dark cave. Our air conditioner leaked and one of the two light bulbs in the bathroom was burned out. When I reported it was treated as "oh well." The staff (with the exception of our house keeper) were inept and paid little attention to detail. No commitment to guest satisfaction. The toilet (bathroom in general) was the most ridiculous I've ever encountered. The saving grace of this hotel was the beach beds mere yards away in one direction and the vibrant nightlife of Playa mere yards away in the other direction. Location is all this place has going for it. The sheets were made of paper, inadequate room furnishings, little privacy (all rooms face each other with sliding glass doors) and bad customer service will not ever briong me back to Mosquito Beach.

Area recommendations
The beaches are exquisite and the bars and restaurants along 5th Avenue offer something for everyone. I'd go back to Playa del Carmen in a heart beat. The shopping isn't all that spectacular but if you hunt you can find things that are of quality and interesting. Lots of junk shops, but a few cute and quaint boutiques.
Dining
We're foodies and dine out 3-4 times per week whether at home or travelling. I'd recommend Casa del Aqua, Sur, Di Vino, John Gray's Place, and Restaurante de Bruno - all along 5th Avenue. Avoid Mexican food tourist traps like La Parilla and Frida. Bad food - worse service. Little Thai place called Babe's - extremely casual, but great cashew chicken. Comprehensive wine lists can be tricky to find. The best I encountered were at Casa del Aqua, Di Vino (although they were out of several listed) and Sur had the best lists. Juan at Di Vino's coffee dessert martini made up for the missing wine selections. Yum! Their tortellini was amazing, as well.

“Great Location, but room is small”

The hotel is very nice, very modern, and has a great location. It is right on the beach and the beach lounge area was fantastic. There are great black beds set up on the sand, big enough for two people to lounge all day comfortably. The beach bar has great food and drinks, breakfast overlooking the ocean was delicious and perfect every morning. The rooms are decorated very nicely, but they are very dark and small. We didn't spend much time in the room, so it wasn't really a problem for us, but there is barely enough room for two suitcases and you will be dressing out of your suitcase because there is no dresser. It's tough to beat this location, so just be aware that you're paying for location not large spacious room. Also, although they advertise down pillows and comforters they are definitely not...and no hottub in the hotel was a bummer.

Shopping
The hotel is right in the middle of downtown Playa del Carmen. Fifth avenue is half a block away, if you can't find shopping, dining, and nightlife there is something seriously wrong with you. It is everywhere and we were able to walk in to every restaurant and bar without a reservation no problem.
