“Second time at GPR and would go back a third”
I was at the GPR November 26-December 3 on a family trip to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday. Everyone in our party of five found the hotel to be clean and well cared for, the staff very friendly and helpful, and the location excellent. We requested rooms in the same general area as we had the last time we stayed here, and they were able to fulfill this request without issue. The standard rooms, while on the small side, are in good condition and were cleaned promptly and thoroughly every morning. The mattresses have been changed since our last visit and are now much more comfortable. We all enjoyed the patio seating area just outside our rooms. The buffet meals were really very good for buffet food, and the a la carte restaurants (Maria's and Il Pescatore) were excellent. The staff at Il Pescatore went out of their way to make my mother's birthday meal enjoyable and memorable. The beach has changed a bit in the last couple of years, but there is still that broad expanse of beautiful white sand. We also enjoyed the new screen roof cabanas that replaced the palapas since our last visit. The only downside was how the loungers were jammed in under the cabanas with next to no space between. The staff at Best Day were very helpful in recommending and arranging tours. Overall, a wonderful holiday thoroughly enjoyed by all. I will say again how engaged and accommodating 99% of the staff we encountered were.
“Can't wait to visit again!”
If you are looking for a relaxing getaway that offers a beachy feel with superior service, Gran Porto Real in Playa Del Carmen is a great choice. The staff especially the waiters on the beach go out of their way to provide you with whatever you desire or need. Everyone greets you with a smile and Buenas Dias' when they pass you. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and definitely will visit again! Hopefully sooner than later!
“Wedding Experience”
My son was married here and the wedding was exceptional. The motel provided a nice wedding package and we had a great time. I think getting an upgrade to a Jr Suite would be a good investment.
“Would not return...”
I recently stayed at the Gran Porto Real for a wedding. When we arrived after traveling for over 12 hours we were told that our room (standard) was not ready. They upgraded our room for the evening but were to move the next day. We asked prices for the upgrade that evening in case we wanted to upgrade. We had a look at the standard rooms and the pictures are really deceiving. There are no windows only shutters that open to the sitting area and outside walkway - no privacy if these shutters are open. The next day we were given totally different prices (much higher) and were suggested to move across the street to their other hotel. At that point I was frustrated and did not want to move rooms 3 times in one trip. Both at check in and the next day we were told the hotel was over-booked. When we asked if we could just stay in the room we were in, it was magically not booked and of course we ended up paying for the upgrade. The food at the buffet & restaurant on site was full of fatty and uncooked meats. I ate mainly salads for the entire week. On the last day my fiancé offered me a piece of his roast beef and I accepted as it looked cooked. Just over an hour later I was in my room throwing up for the next 6 hours. Other members of the wedding package too had issues with the chicken being uncooked and apparently they were warmed on the same grill. If it wasn't for a beautiful wedding & weather this trip would have been a complete waste of time and money.
“Great for families”
Hotel was clean, service was great. Food was reasonable, what you can expect in any all inclusive. Good for families with kids.
“Gran Porto Real”
Second time staying here. Even though the waiters and bartenders were fantastic, the drinks were worse than I remember. Everything tasted artificial as though it was made with aspartame. No real fruit juice except at the breakfast buffet. We stayed in a beach front walkout room so we had turn down service every night which was a joke . . . all we got were chocolates. Beds were not turned down, towels were not picked up off the floor, water was not replenished. Room service was great, food all around was great. The buffet for dinner was better than 2 years ago.
“Great, if you have children who are a little older. We had a wonderful time!”
Staff were great, very helpful! Room was clean and comfortable...awesome views! Teen club would have been better if named video game room only. Kids club was very unstructured and geared for younger kids... so a little tricky with children aged 8 through 11. The daily entertainment staff were great at encouraging everyone to participate. Great access to beach, lots of shells to be found. We had a wonderful time and would definitely go back!
“Middle of the road... would NOT go back.”
We are generally not complainers, so we had to be quite disappointed to actually write a review. We are not beach, pool or outside activity sort of people, so for our needs this hotel did not meet our expectations in the least. Heavy mould smell (almost suffocating) in the elevator, shower, and one entire wing of the hotel. The rooms are nicely air conditioned, but the buffet, hallways are not (open to the outside), so it is sweltering hot and uncomfortable to enjoy. Balcony was so small it was difficult for 2 people to enjoy a drink out there. Food was mediocre cafeteria food and was quite disappointing. We were looking very forward to visiting the Mexican restaurant, Maria's, but it was mostly American dishes and was sadly lacking the yummy Mexican food we were craving. The Italian restaurant was good. The room (Jr Suite Ocean View) had a gorgeous view and was spacious, but we had to call Maintenance to fix the air conditioner that leaked a puddle on the floor, and to fix the shower that wouldn't drain. A soft drink accidentally blew up in our fridge and today is day 3 that they haven't cleaned it... still waiting to see how long it takes! Be aware all restaurants shut down at 10 or 11pm except the 24hr snack bar which has about 4 or 5 items (horrible). No room service after 10pm. If you have late night munchies, you're out of luck. Very limited activities & shows (1 an hour but not a great variety). Cheap alcohol, drinks were mediocre and inconsistently made. Pool close 9p
“Pleasant Stay”
Room: We were at the Gran Porto for three nights at the beginning of November for a wedding at the Royal. We upgraded to a junior suite upon check in and were glad we did. We had a pleasant ground floor room which had a deck that faced the street. It was quiet in the room despite that and the curtains are definitely good black out ones. The beds were comfortable by Mexico standards and the room a good size. The only room issue was with the safe, which showed different numbers than the ones you pushed, so you had to remember your "new" code as it wasn't what you actually put in. Food: Buffet breakfast was very adequate. Not the huge spread of some other resorts, but the room cost isn't as high either so that was expected. Mexican restaurant was nice, but had no vegetarian options. The only thing I could order was the queso dip which was very tasty. When the waiter realized the problem, he had the kitchen make me a special meal which was very nice. The Italian restaurant was the BEST! One of the best meal we have had in Mexico for sure. Would highly recommend it, even if you aren't staying at the hotel. Beach snack bar was great! Beach/pool: the pool area is small but nice and the bar is close by. Having stayed at other resorts in the Riviera Maya with amazing beaches, I don't care for the beaches in Playa. They are really crowded for me, but they are still nice. The service everywhere in the resort was great! Overall, a good inexpensive stay close to Playa!
“Very clean, safe, and excellent service.”
My wife and I just got back from the Gran Porto...Basically its a very nice and clean place with extremely friendly service. The buffet was great and the two restaurants were pretty good too (liked the Italian much more than the Mexican). Yes as in other reviews posted, the beach does have sand bags...but they didn't bother me too much. We were very pleased with our stay and would return again.
