“Bare Bones”

This place was fine for the most part, but I likely won't stay here again. First they requested that we put down a $100US deposit, which I refused to do as I have stayed at plenty of other hotels in Playa and such a request is unheard of in my experience. Accommodation was very bare bones and loud. All noise from outside the courtyard could be heard in the room, so needless to say, we didn't sleep all that well. It sounded like whatever that was happening outside, was happening in our room. I would also recommend bringing your own shampoo and soap if you stay here, as what they provide smells unpleasant. On the upside, it was very clean and in a great location.

“Friendly and Great Location”

The most relaxing time we have had anywhere (and we have been all over - from China and Bali to Europe, Bolivia, Hawaii, Indonesia, Afganistan, and Turkey). The staff is superb and the location is the best. Go to the 30's off Avienda 5 and you will find the best restaurants in Playa.

Area recommendations
The 30's - far better than any Calle below.
Getting there
Ado worked for us.
Getting around
Feet - by far. And stroll 10th and you'll find some less expensive, but delicious, food stands.
Dining
La Cueva del Chango - mmm! The best foood in Playa!
Outdoors or beach
Mamita's is the cleanest, most relaxing, and mellowest in Playa.

“Coco Rio”

Good, small hotel. Not strong English but very clean, looks nice. Staff is friendly. Great location to the more interesting restaurants, bars, etc. off Avenida 5th. Also close to better beach area. Good deal.

“Great location, not the cleanest.”

The location is the best thing about this hotel. Check-in was a breeze and we were even "upgraded" to an Executive Suite with a kitchenette. PROS: *Great location - easy walk to beach, many restaurants and shops, Starbucks is right around the corner *Staff were very friendly and accommodating *Balcony that overlooked 26th street *Computer with internet available for use; free of charge *AC and ceiling fan kept the room very cool CONS: *Room smelled strongly of mildew upon arrival (we went to Mega and bought an air freshener which helped) *Cockroaches! It wasn't infested but we had 5 cockroaches throughout our 5 day stay. If you're easily creeped out I wouldn't stay here but if you can rough it a little, it's not terrible. After all, cockroaches are a fact of life in Mexico! *Poor water pressure in the toilet OVERALL: If you aren't a high maintenance traveler and are looking for a good deal that is centrally located, I would highly recommend this hotel. Only due to the cleanliness factor would I not recommend this hotel to families with small children. Adult travelers looking for a safe quiet place to sleep will do just fine here!

Area recommendations
Cozumel is a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen and is a must see. The ferry is a 15 minute walk from Hotel Coco Rio down 5th Avenue. Renting a scooter on Cozumel is a great idea so you can really see a good amount of the island in a short time. Most of the beaches have scooter parking areas with a man that will watch your scooter and cover it if it starts raining. You should give him a tip when you leave since I'm sure he's not paid for doing this good deed. Also, don't let the rain scare you from visiting the island. It's just an inconvenience but wear your bathing suit under your clothes and it usually stops after 15-20 minutes. Also, there are shuttle vans (collectivos) that leave from the corner of 10th Avenue and Calle 2 that will take you to Tulum for ridiculously cheap. Get dropped off at the ruins which can be seen in an hour or less, then catch a taxi to the beaches about a mile and a half away. The shuttles and taxis run frequently all day long and you don't need reservations.

“Moderately priced with great location”

Check-in was the only negative of our stay. We had to hunt someone down to check us in and there was no one to handle our luggage and our room was on the third floor with no elevator. The room was very nice and reasonbly priced with a superior location. Hotel ambience was fine also.and we had a nice semi-private balcony with lounge chairs outside our door. Most likely to stay again when back in PDC.

“Great Staff, Simple Comfort, Minutes From Best Beach in Playa”

Skip the big hotels and head for this pleasant, small hotel with friendly, helpful staff. We loved the palms and banana trees rising from the stone courtyard. The comfortable bed suited my ache-prone back, and the A/C and fridge helped keep us and the Sol cool in the September heat. Ask for the half price coupon for Mamita's beach chairs and umbrellas, and take the short walk to what we found to be the cleanest and happiest stretch of sand in Playa del Carmen. While others may be happy stuffing themselves at the buffets at the all-inclusives, we had one of the best vacations of our lives (and we consider ourselves well-travelled) relaxing at the beach, visiting restraunts, bars, and taco carts away from AV.5, and resting up at Coco Rio,

“Coco Rio is a great Choice!”

Coco Rio is perfectly situated near 5ta avenida and the beach near Mamita's Beach club. As a guest you receive 50% off all beach chairs and umbrellas at Mamitas. It is also near shoping and restaurants. The Staff was very friendly and helpful and the rooms as well as the lobby was immaculately cleaned each day. For a budget traveller and for anyone not interested in staying at the big resorts this place is a wonderful choice.

“Very Pleased with Stay”

This hotel was exactly what we wanted. The room was very clean and the staff were friendly. It's only a few steps away from 5th Avenue where all the shops and restaurants are. We also liked that it was on the quieter and newer end of 5th Avenue. The beach was only a short stroll away. If you are looking for something more intimate than the mega-resorts, this is a great choice. For the price we were very pleased with everything and can't wait to go back!

Area recommendations
The newer end of 5th Avenue where this hotel is is an ideal location. The other end feels a bit overcrowded, but this side felt more upscale and quite, but was still lively and enjoyable.
Getting there
We took the ADO bus from the Cancun Airport to Playa Del Carmen. It picks-up right at the airport and drops you off at 5th Avenue. The bus was half the price (about $US per person 1-way) and took less time than the shuttles. The buses are new with TV's and A/C. Tickets can be bought in advance or at the airport/station (just after you leave customs their counter is with all of the other transportation companies). One major tip - people will approach you as soon as you leave customs asking if you have a ride to your hotel. These are not helpful airport employees trying to get you to your car, they are timeshare sales people. Just smile and say "no thank you".
Getting around
In Playa Del Carmen, as long as you are staying near 5th Avenue you can walk to all the shops, restaurants, and beach. Colectivos run up and down the highway along the Mayan Riviera if you want to visit another town. They are cheap and convenient and always available. Basically these are the mini-vans that many local employees use to get around. The fee is the same no matter how far you need to go (about $3 US). They stop frequently along the road to pick up people, but they drive fast to make up any time lost! Just tell the driver where you need to go (and remind them when you are near). In Playa, they pick up on Calle 2 between Avenue 15 and 20 (a quick walk from 5th Avenue)
Must see
Chichen Itza and Tulum are both incredible. The Cenotes are also amazing. There are dozens of them around and many are included in Chichen Itza tours. Ik Kil is a very nice one.
