“Would definitely go back!”
Let's be clear, this hotel will not be everyone's cup of tea. The buildings and rooms have a summer camp feel - not modern or luxurious at all. It has a very old school resort feel to it. There is no real onsite entertainment or disco (but a really good live band played one night). Here's the deal. The staff, beach & location are all rare and lovely. The food is good quality and the snorkeling excellent. This is the kind of place that you spend all day in a bathing suit & a coverup and maybe throw on a sundress in the evening and be in bed by 10 or 11. You are walking distance to the town of Akumal & Akumal Pueblo, so you never get that 'stuck in a resort feeling'. You can walk for miles in either direction. The area is safe, and close to many area attractions. Collectivos (Local white vans) can whisk you in either direction up the coast for the equivalent of a couple of dollars. Would I go back? In a heart beat! :)
“A Hidden Gem”
My husband and I discovered Akumal Beach Resort a year ago when we were staying at the Grand Sirenis (10 min drive north of Akumal on the Mayan Rivera). We did not enjoy the impersonal service and expansiveness of the larger resort and preferrred the more personal, Mexican owned and operated appeal of the Akumal Beach Resort which sits on a magnificent expanse of beach and coral reef. We have just returned from our second stay and will return again next year. The snorkelling off the beach is the best. We have seen giant parrot fish, grouper, sea urchins, lobster, manta ray and a myriad of fish. It is like swimming in a giant aquarium. The accomodation at the resort is basic but clean . There is an excellent selection of food at the buffet and the resort has three bars, a huge swimming pool and a recreation staff. We prefer to stay in the 500 or 600 series rooms which are oceanview and oceanfront respectively. The former overlooks the pool and recreation area so if you want quiet you may prefer the other. This resort is not for people who like alot of activity and restaurant variety. It is more laid back . We enjoy walking the beach, relaxing with a good book under the palms and meeting other like minded folk. It is a large enough resort to have privacy but small enough for a more personal stay. The quaint village of Akumal is just a short stroll down the beach where you will find a few shops and quaint seafood restaurants. We have found our 'little Maui'.
“So peaceful!”
We loved how low key it was. The staff and guests were very friendly. It was delightfully peaceful and the food was excellent. The beach was absolutely wonderful and maintained. It felt very safe, including the surrounding town. The snorkeling was great - we actually saw several turtles and swam along side of one- bring an underwater camera! The main draw back was the beds. They were painfully hard, ask for an egg crate cushion to make it bearable. All the rooms are very close to the beach, so we thought it was definetely worth if plus it was a great value! We want to go back.
“Great for families”
Would go back in a minute
“Simple and perfect. needs better beds!”
My family and I travel 3-4 times a year we like simple smaller places. Akumal its the bill perfect, GREAT staff, wonderfull beach, you can walk up the beach to go shopping at one of a few local stands and they dont bug you to buy everything! The resort is clean, well kept and an overall joy to be at. Only complaints, hot tub should be HOT not ice cold! they need to use mattresses instead of box springs(yes you get to sleep on a box spring, I looked) our last day there I found out you could get a mattress pad. Overall if you like simple not loud freindly resorts that are not overcrowded with the hairy germans in speedos this place is a great choice!
“Good value”
Akumal Beach Resort is a good value. Good food, attentive staff, gorgeous beach--you cannot beat swimming with sea turtles. Surrounding villages and activities are an added value. A few pesky irritations...screens and shower doors that didn't quite close, an inefficient andj irksome system for doling out beach towels. But we felt pampered and safe and I would go back again.
“I love this place”
If you are looking for fancy digs, this isn't the place to go. Yes, the beds are hard, but I got used to them after a couple of days. And the room is really basic, but the area is soooo beautiful that I spent very little time in my room. The best thing about Akumal Beach Resort is the beach. I snorkeled almost every day and saw different things each time. The sea turtles are amazing - they just go about their business while you stare at them in awe. The second best thing about Akumal Beach Resort is the staff. The entertainment crew consistently kept my 13 year-old son busy, the front desk bends over backwards to help you, and the tour office staff gives honest advice without pushing you to buy anything. The food isn't fancy but there is lots of variety and again, the staff is super-attentive. And no one has their hand out - you pratcially have to insist to tip anyone!
“Cheap Paradise Alternative”
5 star location, the beach and snorkeling is great. Definitely 3 star hotel, the rooms are comfortable, could use some TLC, A/C was just OK (can't imagine being there in the summer, A/C would not have been adequate), food was great, entertainment staff and bar staff superb. Lighting to building 6 and 7 by the beach was non functional at night. Pros: location, location, location. All inclusive was good. Great staff. Food at buffet was good and had great variety. Snack bar food OK (burgers, dogs, nuggets, fries and ice cream). Variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Cons: A/C, no fridge or mini-bar in rooms, only one beer choice with All Inclusive (Dos XX), computer service expensive/limited (but why do you need that on vacation?) A-la-carte restaurant very limited menu.
“Always love ABR!!!”
Perfect place for easy travelers!
“Best Beach hotel in Mexico”

Akumal - Kantenah, Quintana Roo, Mexico: Snorkeling and diving are popular in the small resort town of Akumal, and at Kantenah beach to the north, where the coastline runs parallel to a protected coral reef. In the summer months, sea turtles crawl onto the white-sand beaches by moonlight to lay their eggs. Yal-Ku Lagoon, once a trading route for the ancient Maya, is a bird watchers paradise, and can be explored by foot or kayak.
