“5 star prices, 3-4 star quality”

Well placed on Copacabana beach with helpful staff and efficient room service, concierge and porters, the hotel was let down by somewhat run-down room decoration and the 40 minute wait for check in. I expected better at these high prices but want to thank the staff for doing so much to make my stay enjoyable.

Area recommendations
Copacabana and Ipanema are both relatively safe after recent efforts to tackle crime in the favellas

“Quality Experience, Great Locale”

The location of this hotel and it's open and beach-facing rooftop pool made this the perfect pick for me. Thanks to UK Consulate for recommending.

Area recommendations
Copacabana beach area is filled with bars and clubs and a shorty walk to the more subdued Ipenema.
When to go
October onwards
Getting around
Loads of taxis everywhere
Other
be sure not to pass up the opportunity to get some cash on hand, not easy to find an ATM, especially one that takes a wide range of providers.

“Excellent Hotel in excellent location”

Would definately recommend the Othon Palace, its ideally located overlooking Copacabana beach with easy promenade walks to Ipanema and the shopping district. They have an excellent breakfast buffet, lots of choice, the restraunt is perfectly positioned for a sweeping view of the beach. We were on the 26th floor & apparently the highest floors are the best currently as there is some renovation on the lower floors. Minor ommisions are: no coffee maker or wi-fi if you want to be picky !! So next time we'll take a coffee jug & dongle !!

Area recommendations
Christ The redeemer: Awesome, everything you imagined & more Sugar Loaf: Views, amazing Ipanema: The girls obviously (as in the song) Copacabana; Excellent beach with good surfing Promenading: Day & night, fascinating sites Very good restraunts behind hotel, grills offer virtually unlimited meat at very reasonable prices

“Rio Othon Palace”

We stayed at this hotel because of its location on the map, knowing little about Rio or the surrounding areas. the hotel is right on the Copacabana beach, but place we would stay next time in Rio is either ipenema or leblon. Copacabana had a lot of tourists and not as nice as the other areas i mentioned. the hotel itself we felt was over priced for what it was, the rooms are very basic. there where several days that the hot water in the shower wasn't working, even tho they gave us a notice about this it was still bad. the restaurant on the top floor was very nice. also the pool area on the top floor is fairly small but was never overly busy so cant complain to much about that, also great views from the pool. the breakfast was nice but we stayed there for 2 weeks and it is the same thing every morning, but there is plenty of choice and couldn't really ask for any other food to be provided. there is a gym on the top floor next to the pool and also the bottom floor, but it is not part of the hotel and you have to pay extra to use them. they have ok equipment and some PT's there. we never got round to using the gym tho! the internet/wifi was expensive, for the amount we paid to stay we felt it should be free. the concierge was extremely helpful and helped us out on several occasions!

Area recommendations
look at the Sheraton hotel, we went there and it was a lot nicer. this hotel isn't terrible but i did look at a lot of hotels in the area and this is the best of the ones around the same price. i wouldn't stay in the Copacabana if i went to Rio again. i suppose it depends on your budget, but i would pay extra to stay in the Sheraton, it is a bit further away from most places, but ipenema and leblon are really nice areas to go for lunch/dinner drinks what ever. its a lot nicer/expensive area tho.
When to go
Go for the carnival if you can!
Getting around
yellow taxis are quite expensive but the best to get straight to where you want to go. the metro is very good and safe and also surprisingly clean. there are also white buses that drive along the beach front that are really cheap.
Must see
Christ statue, Sugar loaf, Favella party on Sunday night, Favella tour, boat trip around the islands.
Shopping
Shopping is extremely expensive!

“Rio Othon is nice but needs some upgrades.”

I had such a hard time to check in at Rio Othon Palace Hotel. First, they didn't want release my room due to missing my son and myselt document with photo identification number . I mentioned that Hotel should send me a message about it, however, they said is not their job, it would be Expedia responsability. Also, I had reserved 2 rooms with 2 beds and 1 king size. However, they said Rio Othon Palace Hotel doesn't guarantee any reservation, depend on the availability. Finally, after a lot complains, they decided to give a room as I reserved. The room wasn't that clean, the refrigerator was dirty and TV was too old. The shower drain was plugged, I had to call 3 times for the maintance, they took a long time to come to the room to unplugged it. On the check out, they were charging me for several missing snacks and drinks. However, only one snacks was taken. The Hotel is nice, but needs some updgrades.

“Happily stay here again”

I was worried by the number of negative reports but found my own experience very pleasant. Staff were helpful and it just did not seem the same place so many people had complained about.

Area recommendations
Try visiting Ipanema and Leblon plenty of good places for food and drink.

“Come back any time”

The hotel is situated directly on the famous Copacabana beach. It is nice, clean and well maintained. The staff was realy friendly and concierge service very effective. The room was not very big but but big enough to make you feel comfortable. The only drawback was the breakfast that was a "mass consuption" in a crowded room without any privacy. The breakfast itself was good. All in all impression was very good and I would come back anytime.

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for your comments posted on the Expedia. We would like to inform you that the renovation of our breakfast room will be finished in a very near future and it will add more quality to our installations. Should your future travels bring you back to Brazil, we will be looking forward to seeing you at our property in Rio Othon Palace Hotel to provide you with the special blend of Brazil and Othon hospitality.
