“Rio November 2011”

This is an expensive hotel however it is located at the heart of one of the best places in Rio close e everything you would want to see and easy access to the beach. The service is excellent. The only negative is that on this second visit to this hotel I ended up staying in a room that did not have a nice and secure lock on the door as you would expect in a hotel of this quality. They need to address this on a few of there rooms. Ensure that you do not end up on one of these rooms. Also the breakfast needs to be complimentary for the price they charge.

Leblon. Close to everything great shops and all key areas to visit. Also I felt secure very secure in this area

“Rio de Janeiro vacation”

It was a great time! Rio is a beautiful city. The food and music are the best! The hotel was nice (apartment style so you could cook) and very close to the beach and shopping! Leblon (city the hotel is in) is the safest area in Rio de Janeiro.

“not impressed”

the noise pollution around the hotel especially traffic sounds did not let us a comfortable rest and sleep even in nights,and the windows didn,t prevent noise at all.

“Great complimentary coffee, by the thimble full sized cup”

Leblon is an upscale neighborhood with many excellent restaurants within walking distance of Mercure. The beach was a disappointment, removed from the hotels, street restaurants,and apartments. by a 2 lane service road and another wide boulevard that beach users have to cross. Relatively quiet atmosphere.The only live music found was on Copacabana beach, where an elderly band could barely get through Girl From Ipanema and did not know Copacabana song nor another popular bossa nova song. However, I was assured that there was a bar or restaurant in Ipanema beach area that had live bossa nova music every night. Mercure restaurants were adequate. Breakfast restaurant on top floor was also used at lunchtime and had great view of city from the patio. Mercure hotel room had kitchenette with a few basic items of tableware and cooking utensils. No soup bowls or ladles. Supermarket just 2 blocks away. There were free shots of expresso in a thermos in the lobby. Excellent coffee, served in the tiniest mini-cups you can imagine. Two free PC's available in the lobby for guests seemed to be always available and working. Front desk staff were friendly and very helpful despite our broken Portuguese and Spanish. Their English was acceptable. On checkout, Mercure cashier tried to double charge for prepaid room, but Expedia Manager intervened to ensure correct billing.

Area recommendations

The attraction of Rio is the miles long beach of white sand that runs for miles through Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. Any of these areas are fine. There is a night arts and crafts market on Copacobana beach and a Hippie Fair every Sunday on Ipanema Beach. Leblon had a wide variety of good restaurants. Taxis were plentiful and bus service seemed very frequent. Curiously, churches (even during Holy Week when I was there) are locked up except during mass behind huge metal fences and have security present during mass. Most of the crime is in the north Rio where the bulk of the Rio millions live, including the favelas built on steep unstable hills subject to mud slides during the rainy season.
