“Good budget option but nothing impressive”
The hotel is in an ok location in Copacabana. The rooms are not impressive but will get the job done. Great breakfast every morning, definitely the saving grace for the hotel experience. Hotel staff friendly and helpful but one desk manager ripped us off when he recommended one of his friends to drive us to Santa Teresa neighborhood. We paid his friend 40 Reals for the drive -- a price the hotel guy determined -- but when we returned, it only cost us 18 Reals in a regular taxi. Very bad form for a hotel manager. If the price is good, the place is ok.
“chep comapre to others, clean and well located”
Rio was a great surprise for me I didn´t know what to expect, but if you are looking for a place to sleep, well located and reasonable cheap, this hotel will cover your basic needs. Is clean, and has everything you need.
“Only looks good from the outside.”
The place looks great on web, is in a good location in the heart of copacabana, impressive lobby, good breakfast. However, staff is not nice, rooms are VERY small and look old, no bath (only shower), two elevators where one didn't work for the entire 3 day stay. Totally overpriced for these types of rooms. wouldn't go back there.
“Good value”
If you want to be in Copacabana this is a great location, three blocks back from the front and 2 blocks to the nearest underground station. Reception are helpful and friendly and the breakfast is good and varied. Room was small but perfect for what we needed, I mean for the price we weren't expecting luxury anyway. The room and bathroom were clean, decently furnished and all you really need for somewhere to rest your head. Recommended if you're on a budget.
“A bit nicer than standard...”
Considering that Copacabana nowadays isn't the best neighborhood in Rio, the hotel surroundings are actually nice, and you're close to a lot very useful services: restaurant, metro, shops, 3 blocks away from the beach... quite right. The hotel is very clean, breakfast is ok, and there's an ok wifi internet. What didn't I like: customer service - hotel staff not nice at all, aweful english.
“Decent hotel for what you pay for”
Overall 3/5, but its not like I paid a fortune. Overall a decent hotel for the price.
“Stinky bathroom”
Overall, the Astoria, as a hotel, wasn't THAT bad. It certainly wasn't that great either. The room itself was fairly clean when we arrived, albeit old. The service was average, about what you would expect from a cheaper hotel. Our biggest problem was that one off the drains in the bathroom was giving off a really foul smell. We were tired enough the first night, we either didn't really notice or just didn't care. The next day was when it started becoming a problem. We complained to the front desk on several occasions, only to have a houseman come and pour a bunch of overpowering chemicals down it. This didn't fix the problem, only masked it for a few hours. I suppose we should have demanded a new room, but we're both the type of people that will simply never go back to a place (restaurant or hotel) as opposed to making a huge deal out of something. Plus we were already unpacked, and weren't really planning on spending that much time in the room. If we had it to do over, we should have either made them switch rooms or gone to another hotel. Of course they should have done that in the first place, or better yet, never have put someone in the room.
“Great location, staff not very forthcoming”
Stayed in the Hotel Astoria Copacabana for six nights in March 2009. Location is great, very close to Copacabana beach. Re overall quality, I would describe the hotel as lower end of mid-range. Room was cleaned daily but sometimes saw ants crawling near the mini-bar. Guy behind reception wasn't terribly helpful; one of those people that pretends he's doing you a favour by just doing his job. As a result of this didn't bother asking reception for any suggestions in terms of nightlife, restaurants etc like I normally would. Breakfast was pretty good.
“the worst service I ever got / unterirdisch mit korruptem Concierge”
Abzocke von Anfang bis zum Check-out incl. eines Heliflugs der nicht stattfand und damit verbundenem 6 Stunden Höllentrip durch Rio. Machen Sie einen weiten Bogen um das Hotel. Don't book even they give it to you for free, this is really the worstest service I ever expirienced!
