“Trip to Rio”

Hotel is conveniently location in Copacabana right next to the beach. The room is clean and service is decent. However, we were assigned to a room located in the back of the hotel where there was construction going on. When we complained about the excess noise from the construction, the staff relocated us to a higher floor with an ocean view.

“Great choice for a week end stay at Copacabana and Ipanema”

My wife and i just stayed there the week end of May 21st, 2011 and were very pleased with the hotel. We got what we paid for (considering hotel rates in RJ are very high). Pluses: a) Great location you are across the street from Copacabana and just 3 blocks from Ipanema so you hit 2 beaches easily. b) Buffet breakfast included in rate is very good and givers you enough gas to run non-stop for 6-7 hrs... until late afternoon for a good meal at Ipanemea c) The rate we got thru expedia was very good considering that walk-in rate for standard room was almost 2X what we paid. Minus: a) Internet service sucks and US$15 a day for lousy signal, b) Concierge service un-existing so don't expect any good advise on where to eat or go from folks at the front desk just have your plan ready before you get there. Otherwise you may get trapped in RJ at 10:00PM disappointed without anywhere to go which is quite unbelievable considering you are in Rio !

Area recommendations

Quite disappointing in RJ is night life... you better have a good plan before you get there (depending on your won personal likes...). The conventional answer when you ask where is a good place to go and have drinks is "Lapa". We didn't like it, just a few blocks of some average bars and nothing really to see. If you prefer hotter places get to the internet and you'll find plenty of choices but you need to write down directions and do your homework. Just don't think because you're in RJ party is good and everywhere. Some taxi rides may take 30-40minutes so you better know where you going.

“Not impressed”

Hotel amenities pretty basic. Neither the safe deposit box nor the internet worked. The room price is too high for what you get..

“Avoid the Standard Rooms”

Do not book the Standard Rooms. They are not well ventilated, very old and the beds are very unconfortable.

“Not impressed with the room, but?”

The only redeeming aspect of this hotel was the breakfast buffet. The pastry was outstanding. As good as any we have had in Paris, France.

The rooms overlooking the beach have an amazing view. The hotel is not bad but the service is standard.

“Great experience.”

Very friendly and helpful staff who spoke both Portuguese and English. Front desk could do a small currency exchange. The hotel was right on the beach, with easy access to it, restaurants, shops, etc. My room was lovely, with a few more amenities than I had seen in previous hotels in Brazil. The hall outside the room needed some work, though, and the windows didn't open more than an inch (although they did in other rooms.)

Area recommendations

Copacabana is great, with a lovely beach. I haven't stayed in another area in Rio. It was easy to visit Corcovada, Pão de Açucar, and other tourist sites. If you are there between August and February outside of Carnaval, look into visiting Ciudade de Samba for a Carnaval experience and a glimpse into the building of the floats.

What to pack

We were there in May, which is winter in Rio. Definitely take layers, and a lightweight jacket or hooded sweatshirt is a good idea, especially for the evening. The hotel provided needed toiletries except for a shaver and toothbrush. For most activities, casual clothing is fine. Take good walking shoes.

“ok”

no view from the room but good location. Got terribly smashed by a wave on Copacabana right in front of the hotel and staff was friendly and helpful - didn't charge us for late check out.
