“Would like to return”

We were very pleased with our accomodations and the hotel staff was very polite and helpful and spoke English. The large bathroom was very well maintained and looked brand new. But the best of all was the restaurant. We enjoyed several dinners prepared beautifully and served with European flair. The morning brunch was included in the price and was far above the included brunches you receive at US hotels. Overall we were very satisfied and plan to stay again when we return to Riga.

Area recommendations
I would recommend enjoying the sites in Old Riga. Beautiful, historic architecture, a nice variety of shops and the best place to eat (and good value), any of the Lido's restaurants, which were very accessible.

“Worth it”

It's a very nice hotel. The only observations would be that the breakfast was more of 3 star hotel not 4. But otherwise the premises were very nice, lots of character. Staff helpful and location quite good as well.

“If you only ever eat one hotel breakfast....”

Fantastic breakfast! Gorgeous restaurant with delicious breads, hams, cheeses, sausages, eggs 4 ways, jams, fruits, vegetables, and even salmon and herring! It's a lovely old building with beautiful common areas and well heated rooms in winter. Eurpoa Royale is an easy walk to the Opera, the Old Town, or the train station. From the airport, take the 22 bus to the station area, and grab a taxi or leg it from there. Hotel staff is great, and even loaned us an umbrella in the rain. Rooms have a clean bathtub for soaking after a day of walking the cobbled streets of the Old Town.

Area recommendations
Get lost in the windy old town streets.
Events and shows
When in Riga, you must take in a ballet. Tickets are cheap, and eastern Europe really knows how to do this. Plus, the opera house is beautiful, and you'll score points with your wife/girlfriend.

“Tale of 2 Hotels”

There are 2 parts of the hotel, the beautiful old part with big old fashioned rooms and the new part with close to cheap Motel rooms. We were there a week and thanks to a review on the internet asked to move from our new crappy room on the 4th floor to the old part. After one night we moved to a 2 room suite suited to a top notch hotel. The problem is that there are so many tours passing through, you have to be lucky to get a good room. They have a public use PC in the lobby and intermittent free wifi in the rooms. All in all, considering the price and location, this hotel is a good choice. You can walk to the old city or central market and train station in a few minutes. The buffet breakfast was well maintained every day and had something for everyone.

Area recommendations
The Old City and Central Market/Train Station. It is a good idea to take an established tour especially if you are a retiree.

“Beautiful Historic Hotel in Riga”

My family and I have visited Riga several times over the past years, but this was our first time at the Europa Hotel. The hotel is very beautiful, and almost feels like you are staying in a museum, yet it is comfortable and approachable. Our deluxe room was spacious and quiet, overlooking the interior courtyard. The food at Benjamins was delicious, and service excellent. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Latvia!

“No better place to stay in Riga”

My family (5 people) stayed there for 10 days in 3 separate rooms (2 Standard rooms and 1 Deluxe). Each room had its own charm but try to get one in the ‘old’ portion of the hotel to truly enjoy the palatial feel. The beds were a bit firm for my liking, but the rooms were very quiet and extremely comfortable. The little things like having a full armoire for clothing add to the charm. The A/C was icy cold (if you wanted it that way) and purred like a kitten all night. Don’t expect broadband speeds with the WIFI and the service was a bit iffy at times, but for checking email or general surfing it’s just fine. And don’t get too excited over the casino. This isn’t like Vegas so unless you really do have money to burn and don’t mind being intently watched... However Benjamins restaurant is absolutely perfect so save your money and enjoy a delicious meal or 3. The staff was top notch and went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The location in the city was ideal. Within easy walking distance of Old Riga and other shopping and fine dining. We go to Riga nearly every year, and this is the only place we will stay at from now on.

Area recommendations
Old Riga. Walk amongst ancient buildings and churches and explore the rich history of the city. You’ll find everything from the 1300's to today. World class dining and great little shops around every turn. Street vendors selling traditional Latvian crafts and so much amber it’ll make your head spin.
Dining
The dining in Old Riga is amazing. It truly rivals any other western city for not only selection but quality. There are so many choices it’s nearly impossible to decide. Gems exist in the least likely places so take a peek in the travel guides because otherwise you’d never find them.

“Excellent stay in Riga”

We have just returned from an excellent stay in the city of Riga. Our hotel was not only in a very good situation with everywhere we wanted to go in a short walking distance but also very comfortable and charming as a hotel. The complimentary breakfasts offered a wide range of dishes and service was very efficient. We also ate 2 dinners in the Benjamin Restaurant which were of excellent quality and good value. All the staff in the hotel were corteous and helpful.A place we would definitely return to and recommend to friends.

Area recommendations
The old town is very attractive and interesting to visit. However areas within the new town ( near the hotel) and in the Art Nouveau district also had a great deal to offer.
Getting around
Although within the centre we had no need to use public transport it was obviously plentiful and efficient. We prebooked with our hotel a taxi from the airport which seemed the best and cheapest option. We took two day trips on the train - one to Jurmala ( Majori) and one to Sigulda. The trains were very good value and ran efficiently.

“Great value in Riga”

The first impression of the hotel when taxi pulled up in main street was not great but when you go round corner into side street where main door is located it improves greatly. Receptionist was very friendly and spoke excellent English. Our room was huge bright and airy bathroom was enormous with separate bath and shower and was spotlessly clean. Buffet breakfast was adequate but not what you would want everyday for a week. Hotel location is great just a short walk in a straight line to old town. Great place for a short break/

When to go
Paddy Whelans Irish Bar. Ask for Tom. A really friendly barman and most helpful if you want to do a group activity like shooting, bungee jumping etc. Great atmosphere , entertainment if you want it or just a quiet seat in a comfy chair on the first floor.

“Will definately go back”

Booked into this hotel and really enjoyed it. The hotel is less than a mile from the centre of Riga - where everything happens. Room was spacious and of a high quality. Breakfasts were excellent - buffet style and typically Scandanavian. Hotel decor is fabulous - especially the originlal part of the property. All in all a great location to explore Riga.

Area recommendations
On balance this location is perfect. It is close to to the centre of town, near the bus and train station and quiet at night.
Getting there
Flew via Helsinki Finnair. Good flight and prety much on time. We had an hour in Helsinki and just made it to the plane as a) we got dropped off at Gate 36 - the last gate in the terminal and b) despite the fact we were transiting had to go thru passport control - that was a surprise - we had to queue and we just made it to the plane. Coming back was a dawdle as the arrival gate and the departure gate to London were next to eachother.
What to pack
we went in early August and the weather was hot, humid and had clear skies. Riga is pretty informal - no need for evening dresses etc. We had very little in the way of rain (just one thunder plump) - but the locals said it rains on averge each 3 days. Most of the evenings are spent outside sitting in pavement cafes/bars/restaurants.
Must see
There is a lot to see and do in Riga - must sees are the churches, the art noveau buildings, the market. There are walking tours in the various guides they hand out and they are really good. We spent a week there and did a lot of walking around. We also walked into the suburbs - that was an interesting day out - just showed that in no time you can be in the suburbs which are quite rural! Did not feel threatened at all in our walking. We did take the train to the beach at Jurmala - it was great. Train is easy to catch and there is a tourist desk in the station if you get stuck. If you go to the the Grebenschikov Church ( Golden Dome) - women must cover their hair and wear skirts - trousers are apparently not welcome ( as we found out) Tip - go to the trourist office and getas many handouts/maps as you can. I also bought a bus route map - it was 75p. Very useful to see where you can get to. Must admit - never used it.
Dining
Lots of cheap good quality roadside caffes/restaurants. No problems with the food quality and the prices are good.
