“over priced”

Hotelrestaurant Auerstein is not located at the central of Heidelberg. You need to take a transportation to go to the old town. It has no nice view, but only very normal "street view". The hotel has no elevator. Mainly it seems a "restaurant" than "hotel". The bathroom is very tinny. The room I stayed was quite large in comparison of other Germen small hotels but the price is way high than others too.

Area recommendations
Old town in Heidelberg is very interesting and worth to stay a night at least.
Must see
The castle in Heidelberg is "Must-see". You can rent a audio with the language you prefer to walk through the castle. A brief introduction is quite helpfull.

“4 days in Heidelberg”

We had a cracked sink in the bathroom, and very thin bed quilts with no covers on them. Breakfast was good, evening meal very expensive.

“Affordable stay”

The hotel is in a convenient location, though not in the center of the city, but very close to a tram stop. The quality of breakfast and food is good. Rooms are practical, no luxury, however. But it is a fair deal. You should not necessarily get a room facing the front since the noise of the tram might disturb you.

“Nice, clean, friendly, flexible and helpful”

We planned to be there for 2 nights, because our baby needed treatments at the University hospital which is nearby. The welcome was very friendly and we were offered to chose from all available rooms, which we did. We picked #36, which was at the top of the building, very nice, light, large, quiet and had a nice view as well. When the hospital told us that we could leave a day earlier, the hotel was willing to refund the 2nd night without problems. However, when it then turned out that we had to stay a day more not less, we could stay a 3rd night in the same room for the same special rate. Breakfast was also very good and the waitress very friendly. So all in all we had a great experience and the only downside was the missing lift, which wasn't important to us.

Getting around
We picked the hotel for its proximity to the university hospital, but one should know that it would be a little too far to walk from there into the old town of Heidelberg. However, there is a tramway right in front, which can take you quickly to wherever you want to go.
Must see
I actually studied in Heidelberg hence lived there quite a while, and apart from the famous castle, I would suggest to walk the "Philosophenweg" along the hill opposite the old town, and to spend at least one evening with a student pub crawl along the "Untere Strasse", which is close to the "Heiliggeistkirche" in the middle of the town. Also, in summer, it's nice to join the crowd sun bathing on the "Neckarwiese" right by the river across the "Theodor-Heuss-Brücke".
Dining
The restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel has great reviews and rewards, but unfortunately didn't meet our expectations. They may have had a bad day, but I think a much better option in this part of town is the "Alt Hendesse", where you get better food for a better price! Together with the "Sudpfanne", which is downtown at the end of the "Hauptstrasse", these are my favourite restaurants in Heidelberg.

“The location leaves something to be desired”

This is a charming old hotel, the staff are courteous and pleasant, everything was immaculately clean, and the room was spacious, tastefully furnished, and very light and airy. The only downside to this hotel is the location. The hotel fronts on a busy arterial, so the street noise is considerable, even into the late hours of the night. Indeed, the hotel even provides earplugs by the beds. The street noise problem is exacerbated by the fact that, like most European hotels, there is no air conditioning, so, during the hottest summer months, you have to keep the windows open to keep cool. It should also be noted that this hotel is located in a more outlying, predominantly residential neighborhood. There is little to see or do within easy walking distance of the hotel and almost no restaurants at which to dine other than the one in the hotel itself (which looks quite good, but is typically pricey as hotel restaurants are apt to be). All in all, there is much that is positive to be said for this hotel, but the location presents challenges which may not be to everyone's liking.

“Mixed Reviews!”

The Auerstein was a nice hotel with 'character'. We would not stay at either hotels we were at. We were not aware that there was NO air-conditioning in either hotel and both were on busy streets. Fortunately the hotels supplied fans. From now on we will make sure our hotel rooms are air conditioned.

Traveller's tip
Make sure your European hotel has AIR-CONDITIONING when you vacation. The weather can be very warm and uncomfortable!

“Good hotel, great restaurant!”

The hotel was very comfortable but not lavish. The staff was friendly and helpful. The best part of the staff was the wonderful restaurant. The food was incredible! The breakfast, which was included in my rate, was very generous and high-quality. The dinner (not included) was the best meal I had in 2 weeks in Europe.

Traveller's tip
Good location. Although the hotel is not located right in the Altstadt (Old Town), it sits right on the trolley line. It's a very convenient 10-minute ride to the Old Town from the hotel.

“Gute Unterkunft”
