“Great value hotel”

This is the perfect location for me - as it is close to the office. The local restaurants are also very good - with at least 6 within 10 minutes easy walking distance.

Area recommendations
Although this hotel is 30 minutes from the centre of Reykjavik it should still be considered for tourists.

“Good basic hotel for business traveller”

Rooms are small but clean and tidy, with good, hot, showers. A kettle and complementary teabags are provided, and there is a minibar/fridge. Good (free) WiFi access. Few shops/restaurants nearby - the hotel is in the middle of an area with lots of furniture stores etc, but little else; about 30 mins walk from the downtown area, but close to conference (and other) facilities in the nearby Hilton hotel.

“Out of nowhere”

The hotel is located in an area of services/displays away from the town centre and residential areas. Although it is accessible by buses, there is nowhere to go in the surroundings including restaurants and shops.

Area recommendations
In the town centre where plenty of restaurants and shops are.

“Good value”

The hotel was within easy walking distance of a supermarket, and a lovely park with flower gardens and walking trails. It was in a more industrial area, so no nearby restaurants that we found (a breakfast is offered each morning for a small fee) . It was easy to access the highway from the hotel, and a good value.

Area recommendations
We did not stay in the downtown area, as hotels outside the city centre were cheaper, and we were not interested in the bar scene. However, the downtown contains many nice restaurants.

“Good Value - somewhere to lay your head”

At the price charged this si a great bargin. The area is commerical which is closed after 5pm so do not expect to be able to easily walk to things. But for a place to rest your head at night and spedn the day away at sights, this works very well. My very short interaction with the staff was pleasant. I would stay again

“Nice Quiet Hotel”

This Hotel is outside of DownTown Reykjavik, but the city bus has stops very close and the touring companies have free hotel pick up anyway. There is a community swimming pool at Laugardalslaug near by and it was very nice. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the morning breakfast was a nice way to save money while on vacation. They have rooms with a kitchenette and there is a Grocery Store called "Bonus" in walking distance and this is another great way to save money on your trip. I enjoyed my stay here very much!

Area recommendations
If you are trying to experience the night life of Reykjavik i would recomend staying at a hotel in downtown, taxi's are expensive and i don't know how late the bues run. If you are planning on tours around the country through the many tour companies and want a place to sleep and relax then this is a great choice! If you only want to visit downtown during the day time, this hotel is a good choice as well because the buses stop near by and will take you to the down town bus terminal which is only 1 block away from the main shopping street in downtown.
Shopping
There are plenty of shops a good 10 minutes walk to the south east of this hotel. If you get a room with a kitchenette there is a grocery store called "Bonus" well within walking distance. The neighborhoods aroudn this hotel get very very quiet at night. Most stores close around 7-8pm and there was no near by conviencestore that i found. If you want late night snacks, you had better get them before nighttime. There is a shopping mall nearby but i did not go there during my stay. But it is close and well within walking distance. Downtown you will find unprecidented ammounts of shopping. A flea market that runs on Saturday mornings along the waterfront.
Dining
There are plenty of eateries near by, but they are typically only open during the day, they seemed to close relativly early in comparison to the hours one might expect in the United States. The road "Laugavegur" will take you right into downtown where you will find more places to eat than you will know what to do with!! If you don't have a car the bus runs along this road. I highly recomend "Icelandic Fish and Chips" and "Sægreifinn" which are both located along the harbor downtown. I also liked "Icelandic Bar" which had excellent food. A must try is "Bæjarins Bestu" also located downtown.

“Excellent value.”

Clean faciliy, efficent staff and a wonderful breakfast. Not in the centre of things but all of the organized tours pickup at the hotel. Would use Hotel Vik again.

“Extremely good value - room was a good European hotel standard - hard to come by in ICeland”

Flybus took more than 2 hours to get there from KEF airport. And lobby very disappointing - just a window for reception in a small hallway. No elevators. And a long walk from anywhere but quite close to domestic airport which was my destination. But it was open at 1am for my arrival and they helped me with suitcases. Room was lovely - I went for the superioir at a good rate. Was spotlessly clean and comfortable - bathroom in the room itself so maybe not ideal for longer stays. Breakfast good and extensive. Very helpful staff. Excellent value for Reykjavik.

Area recommendations
I avoid Reykjavik. Overpriced and crawling with tourists. Iceland is so much more. So arrive in Reykjavik and fly north the next day is my tip - go to Husavik for whales, scenery, puffins, friendly icelanders....
What to pack
Thermals. No woolly hats - you'll buy loads of them
Family-friendly activities
Whale watching in Husavik with Gentle Giants - fantastic

“Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.”

As a lone traveller it was a perfect hotel as a base; comfortable, secure, quiet and clean with a really good buffet style breakfast. The centre of Reyjavik is within walking distance takes about 45 minutes to an hour but No. 11 bus service runs every 30 minutes and the tour trips that I arranged picked up from the hotel. It was good value for money and I would use again.

Area recommendations
During my stay I wandered around Reyjavik and did not consider any area to be bad and as a lone traveller I felt secure at all times. Obviously for convenience staying nearer the centre would be ideal but for economy the areas within 3miles or walking distance of the centre should be considered.
Getting around
If you are staying in and around Reyjavik get yourself a 24/48/72 hour welcome card from the tourist information and this wll get you free bus travel, free access to some museums, free ferry to the Island of Vidney, free access to thermal pools and discount in some stores/restaurants.

“Hotel Vik - Iceland”

The capital city of Iceland is very difficult to get around for a foreign visitor. However, the hotel, a real deal for the money in an otherwise expensive city, had actually one of the largest rooms out of the 26 nights I stayed in Europe (that is not to say the room was particularly large by U.S. standards). I did not use the optional breakfast buffet. The hotel is on a very quiet street.

Area recommendations
Because of limited time in Iceland, and the fact that I could not seem to navigate through the capital city, I actually opted to concentrate on the country as a whole, rather than the city. The southeast part of Iceland is the most scenic, but the northside also has some very interesting, and beautiful, topography. The Blue Lagoon is very hard to find, because it is not located on the road that most maps put it on. However, if you go to the Blue Lagoon from the capital, it's probably not a problem. Most roads in Iceland, except the main circle road, are unpaved, and in very poor condition. English is spoken everywhere.
