The staff were very welcoming and extremely helpful at making our visit to Madrid as enjoyable as possible. They advised us about tour bus tickets, which they supplied, and made a reservation for us at a superb seafood restaurant when we told them what kind of evening meal we would like. The room was clean and was upgraded from our original booking without our asking. It was also sound proof, ensuring a good night's sleep despite its superb central location.
"Old School (In a good way) elegant hotel in Madrid"
The staff's pride in this hotel is immediately evident. The checkin/out is respectful, quick, seamless.
Very enjoyable lunch on the patio.
The gym needs a little more equipment to get a half decent workout.
"Good place close to the train station and center"
We stayed here because it was only five minutes away (walking distance) from the train station, and close to the city center and the most important museums. It had a reasonable price compared to the other places that were close by. The room was clean and everything was ok. It wasn't the most comfortable place in the world, but for only one night it was good.
The hotel is in a good location close to the Retiro Park and the three major museums. However, be warned about taking a room that looks over the park. Because the photos on the website look like it backs directly onto the park, I specifically requested this. Unless you are a very sound sleeper, don't! There is a very noisy road between the hotel and the park, with heay traffic stopping at lights right in front of the hotel and then roaring off again all through the night. This made getting a good night's sleep well nigh impossible. The balcony doors do not cut out this noise sufficiently.
Because I had specially requested this room, we stuck it out for a few nights, hoping to get used to it. We did not. However, once we told the hotel staff they were very nice about it, changed us to an interior room, and made up for the smaller bed by offering us free breakfast, - should have complained sooner.
Next to the broad, tree-lined Paseo del Prado, the new extension at the world-class Prado museum is an architectural triumph. The well laid-out Botanical Gardens opposite the entrance are worth a wander and behind them lies Madrid’s green sanctuary, the Retiro park. Boat on the lake, stroll through the fragrant rose garden, and watch the terrapins sunbathe by the delicate Palacio de Cristal.
