“Perfect spot for a quiet retreat (if you don't mind the food)”
Great resort, perfect beach for snorkeling. However, the food options are rather limited, there are only 3 resorts on that beach, and all their restaurants are rather westernized. Don't expect to find any authentic Thai food here. It's ok though for a few days, the nice setting (bungalows on the hill side, hidden among trees) and cocktails at sunset well make up for it. Don't bother going to the other side of Ko Samed. Ao Prao is much nicer and not crowded (there were never more than 20 people on the beach at the same time - this was during August).
“Not worth the money...”
Koh Samet (Samed) is a lovely island with a good mix of restaurants and bars for all ages, couples and families and we enjoyed our time there. The Ao Prao however is sadly not even close to being worth the money they are charging. The rooms are distinctly tired and in need of a serious overhaul and although the pool is pleasant, the adjacent beach and the sea are not clean. Their 'famous' sunsets were also, for the time we were there, not that special and shrouded in mist so that the actual sunset was not visable. The Ao Prao is on the West of the island, whilst most of the island life is on the East. As the hotel does not run a shuttle one is forced to pay an inflated price at the neighbouring moped hire place or to walk across the island in search of reasonably priced food and drink as well as a pleasant ambience and (in our opinion) a nicer beach. All the activities the hotel provides can be found at up to half the price elsewhere on the island and are of a similar quality - they even charge over the odds for internet usage. The hotel restaurant prices are silly money for Thailand and there are only a couple of other choices nearby, compared with many many more on the East - we had our best meal of the trip in a tiny restaurant in this area. If you want to go to Koh Samet, stay on the upper East side, around Ao Phai or Haat Sai Kaew. If you really want to stay in the Ao Prao area, try the hotels next door. Avoid the Ao Prao unless you enjoy paying more for less.
