“good hotel with good service”

Our stay was quite comfortable. The hotel itself is nothing fancy, but in a good condition. What really makes all the difference is the great service from hotel staff. They were all very nice and helpful. This is important when staying in Manuel Antonio since you often need to arrange different activities / tours / transportation etc. To sum it up - dont hesitate to book this hotel if the price is nice. But do not expect a lavish 5 star resort.

Area recommendations
Best to stay in the vacinity of la mariposa. A very good location.
Getting there
In addition to getting to / from san jose airport to manuel antonio via private shuttle or shared shuttle, you can also take a public bus that costs a lot less and takes the same time! we took this option on the way back to the airport, after taking a private van on the way from the airport. the fare for this bus is 4000 colones (about 8$!!!!!!!!). it departs from the bus station at QUEPOS - it will cost you about another 6$ to get to QUEPOS, and you can also pay the taxi driver the amount he would have taken anyway - and he will drive and buy the tickets for you!!! just ask this from the reception staff. Note that they highly recommend to buy the tickets a day before.

“terrible”

rude service, poor upkeep of rooms (toilet did not work, shower did not work), rooms were not cleaned properly and items (towels or soaps) were not restocked ever.

“Beautiful view but overpriced”

Our hotel had a beautiful view, but it was overpriced, old and needed some care in the room and outside of hotel. Our room had bugs in it. The bed was old and lumpy. The stairs were very difficult to walk on when it was raining. The breakfast was limited and had flies swarming on some of the pastries.

Area recommendations
I would recommend somewhere more on the beach rather than up in the hills. It made it difficult to travel back and forth to the town.

“Gorgeous views!!”

Second visit to this hotel. Views of ocean can't get much better. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great breakfasts. Love the infinity pools and hot tub. Sunsets are beautiful to view from restaurant and pool area. Rooms are sparse but very clean. Stayed in a standard ocean view room. Updated bathrooms nice. Like most places, could hear neighbors TV. Who needs to watch TV in a place like this? Luckily, the spider monkeys playing on our roof drowned them out a lot. Would highly recommend this place. Do plan on returning here again on next trip.

When to go
Fifth trip here. Our favorite time to go is in May. Rates are lower, less crowded. Rains a little but is welcomed. Sun usually comes out later.
Getting around
We always rent a car. They pick us up at airport. Only way to have your freedom to move around. Roads have improved over the years but some can still be tricky. Its an adventure so go for it. Only way we could find new places to stay. Don't be afraid to take gravel/dirt roads uphill.
What to pack
Take out half of what you packed and leave behind. One good pair of "water sock" shoes. Need good grip on them and can be easily washed off. All walking involves uphill and down and somewhat slippery. Leave cute sandals behind. They are useless for walking comfortably. Girls- one bathing suit, 1-2 light weight sundresses, one pair of shorts, couple of tank tops. Underclothes that can be rinsed out and hung to dry. One long sleeve shirt for cool nights up in cloud forest area. One pair of hiking pants. Guys-wick dry type t-shirts, pair of shorts, bathing suits, hiking pants, same type water socks. Bug spray, sun screen. Pack light.

“Was even more beautiful in person”

The character of the hotel and the views were what attracted me to book this hotel, but I was swept away by being there in person! You cannot capture those views in a picture. The staff was helpful and friendly. We booked all the excursions through the hotel and we were not disappointed. The food at the restuarant was wonderful.

“On top of the world”

Overall, great location and Hotel. You have a fantastic views of Manuel Antonio, sunsets and the ocean. Easy walk to one of the best beaches in Costa Rica or you can take a hotel shuttle. Unfortunately, the staff was less than satisfactory. Not overly friendly and helpful.

“1000 Monkeys can't be wrong”

Checked in a day early after a 4.5 hour drive from Arenal. Not only did they have a room they upgraded us to an ocean view suite. From our private balcony we watched white faced monkeys frolic in the palm trees less than 15 feet away. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to assist with calls to my rental car company to get a repair person on site. The grounds are beautiful, the views are world class. Highly recommend this hotel.

The main road from the hotel to the Manuel Antonio beach has several good stops for food and drinks.

“Infinity pool and beyond”

Great hotel with wonderful views and excellent service. We were upgraded from standard garden view to standard ocean view which was amazing, waking up to Playa Manuel Antonio from the hillside setting of the hotel. However our friends who were upgraded to the deluxe ocean view had to climb up to the top floor to get to their room 3 floors up and there's no elevators. There's an amazing infinity pool which lights up at night and waiters deliver your drinks pool side. There are also swim up pool bars. The food was pretty good and the setting very romantic on the terrace in the evening. There is a shuttle bus to the beach otherwise you need a car to get to Manuel Antonio or Quepos. Both bustling little towns though Quepos can be a bit seedy at night. Many venues close early at 10pm around the hotel so don't plan for late night dining. The hotel organised all our trips very efficiently, mangrove kayaking and rafting with Unique tours were great. Nothing was ever too much trouble and everyone speaks English. Watch out for the monkeys jumping round the hotel as they will pinch your stuff if you leave windows open but they are cute. Great experience and recommend La Mariposa, it is listed in that 1001 places book so what else can I say.

Getting there
If you down to Quepos from Samara I recommend the ferry trip route. We caught the ferry at Playa Narajo to Puntarenas. It takes about an hour and a half but it's so much fun. We danced with the locals onboard as latin music blared out from 5ft speakers. It made a good break from driving on the dodgy roads and we felt we got a real flavour of Cosat Rica and it's Tico's.

“La Mariposa”

We actually didn't like our stay. We tried to leave and we weren't let out of the remaining nights. The hotel was over priced and the rooms were old. The manager never got back to us about our ipods being stolen eventhough he told us 3 different times that he would get back to us. I even left my email address for him but still haven't heard from him and it has been a week now.

Area recommendations
If you want good typical food, you need to go to Quepos for it. Also, there was a cafe across the road from La Mariposa (also across from a bus stop ) that was our favorite place to eat.

“One of our best vacations ever”

Had a great time at La Mariposa. The staff bent over backwards to be helpful and accomodating - thanks especially to Andres and Johannes. Views were spectacular. We particularly liked the restaurant on the grounds of the hotel but not affiliated with the hotel. Bed was a little too firm but the room was large, attractive, and spotlessly clean. Problems (a non-working light) were dealt with immediately and graciously. We would definitely stay there again.

Area recommendations
Manuel Antonio National Park with a guide is a must. We went twice. You would be suprised what you will miss without a guide (sloths, toucans, basilisks, etc.). We also spent a day in Quepos and saw squirrel monkeys for the first time right in town.
Getting around
Bus fare between the hotel, beach. and Quepos was 240 colon and well worth it. There is a free shuttle between the hotel and beach but we often used the bus when the shuttle wasn't available.
