“Exactly what we needed - don't believe the negative reviews”

I was nervous about choosing this hotel given some of the comments - but had no problems at all. To quickly address some of those points. Distance to beach - it is about 10 minutes walk - or 3 minutes drive as you can park almost on the beach. The beach is good although there are better. Staff speaking english. The receptionists all speak english and you can get by with the rest although it is only polite to learn a few phrases. Hotel run down - I didn't think it was. Rooms dark - perhaps a very little, but I think it was fine Food poor quaility/ expensive. The food we had was fine and the cost was on a par with local places. Breakfast limited. There was a choice of cereal, toast fruit, croissants, cakes, meats, cheeses, omlettes and other stuff - what more could you want? It is down a dirt road - no, it is a very new tarmac road Moving on, the pool was excellent. The hotel also has beach umbrellas etc that you can use. The building is old, so could be a problem if you get noisy neighbours, but they would have to make plenty of din to be a problem. Also they do have a disco part, but it is not amongst the residential part.

Area recommendations
I would recommend any of the beaches towards villasimius and around
When to go
We went in September and whilst there were people about it was not too crowded. It certainly looks like many places close after the last weekend in September.
Getting there
From the airport follow the signs for Villasimius - if you take the route via Poetto it will take 15 minutes longer. When you see a turn on the right for the Kala e Moru beach take the third exit which is signposted. It does take about an hour in total
Getting around
You do need a car to get to the best beaches - but if you want a stress free day don't even think about going into Cagliari!
Dining
We found the da barbara restaurant to be the best but it is about 10km towards vilasimius. The nearer Van Gogh was not as good. The hotel restaurant is also good and not expensive especially for pizza

“True Sardinian Flavour”

A place one doesn't want to leave. Friendly staff, lovely pool and excellent restaurant with local cuisine in beautiful surroundings. The conversion of a monastery into a really trendy and tastefully designed hotel is quite unique. Old an new blend beautifully. The location is superb, as it is near the Motorway, the beach and Cagliary. Would go back tomorrow.

“Cute, relaxing and good food”

We came away for a 'do nothing' holiday and it was perfect. The rooms were cute, although the mattress was a bit too squidgy for my preference. The hotel is set in the middle of nowhere so a car is essential to get around. Staff were friendly and kept themselves in the background. The food offer varied - breakfast was very basic, but dinner was lovely with amazing pasta dishes and second plates. The hotel has a large pool with shaded areas for lounging in, plus crazy golf, ping pong and fusball next to it for some entertainment. There were 2 things that we didn't like, the first being the size of the shower - it was tiny (and I'm only 5'2"!) but the power was good which is the main thing. Secondly, I'm not sure if this was because we visited in early season (June) but the dining area really lacked atmosphere with all the tables facing to the door to watch newcomers walking in. Silent diners listening to piped music. Hhhmm. This aside, the holiday was exactly what I needed to unwind from the stresses of my job.

Dining
The restaurant itself was good if a little lacking in ambience. For lunch, experience the real Sardinia at Il Gambero (about 5-10 mins drive). Amazing fish dishes and in the evening they serve pizza too, although the strip lighting they use later on ruins the effect a little. We also tried (something) Barbara which was also divine. My fiance is still talking about the biscotti we had at theend of the meal with our coffee.

“dream place”

I booked this hotel with mixed feelings from previous reviews but I can honestly say that it exceeded our expectations. From the moment you arrive you instantly relax. The pool area is a dream, the hotel itself is rustical and interesting and although the rooms are basic you have everything you require. We would certainly recommend this hotel and we would certainly return here. The restaurant and service was also excellent.

Traveller's tip
You will need to hire a car to explore as it would be around 20 mins or so to walk to the nearest beach.

“Hotel II Monastero”

This is a very unique Hotel for anyone who wants a 'place with a difference'. The Hotel can barely be seen from the outside but once you have walked through towards the Reception area the lay-out is superb (depending on one's point of view). As the Hotel was originally a Monastery care has been taken to keep the rooms just as they would have been used - with brickwork and plaster. When the huge wooden shutters are closed there is no daylight at all. However the rooms are comfortable although the lighting we found inadequate. The grounds are beautiful and the Hotel is surrounded by fields of home-grown vines and herbs. The tranquility is wonderful and there is one of the loveliest natural built swimming pools - along with crazy golf, table tennis etc which was not advertised. A lovely beach is approx 15 mins walk. The only drawback in this location is dining - Hotel menu is limited although food very good and you need a car to drive to the nearest Restaurant. Other than that would recommend as an ideal centre for those who are willing to drive and explore - you DO need a car here.

Traveller's tip
You do need to hire a cAr for this area as local attractions tend to be off the beaten track and the local bus service is unreliable. Also attractions do close before end of September.

“a trully refreshing step back in time”

Stunning location, quiet desolate, literally in the middle of nowhere, stunning views, beautifully furnished, lovely friendly staff, only problem really would be the restaurant, which didnt have too much choice, otherwise il monastero is a wonderful place to stay if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, and get away from it all. stunning beaches nearby, but one word of advice dont come here without a car, or bike as walking on the winding mountain roads is very dangerous, no foot paths, so you really need a car to get around!! all in all wonderful would definately go back

Traveller's tip
make sure you hire a car or bike, you'll need a good mode of transport to see stuff here

“Sun, sea and sand and nothing else? This is it!”

Good basic hotel, shop, beach and a couple of restaurants are within walking distance, if you are looking for just a week by the beach/pool then it is great. Staff are polite and made us very welcome. Not many restaurants so if you don't have a car you are a bit limited. The dinner menu in the hotel is a little limited although breakfast is fine. If you walk down to the other end of the beach the restaurant Van Gogh has good traditional Sardinian food. Hotel has good facilities, hammocks are great. Beach nearby is lovely, not overcrowded. If you take a bus to Cagliari or Villasimius, try and get a ticket before you get on the bus, although we never worked out where from, if you dont you get shouted at.

“verblijf augustus 2011 Il Monastero”

We spent a week in this hotel with our daughter 13 and had a wonderful time. The staff was was helpfull and friendly.
