“Wost hotel ever”

For rate charged the quality of this hotel it was unsatisfactory - did not expect 1)not to have hot water 2) a dirty room 3) elevator that would not even come down or go up within 15 min. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Even if it is close to the cruse ships not worth the $$$.

“Staff fabulous, place needs A LOT OF attention”

Don't be deceived by the HJ brand. This is not the HJ you may know. The pluses: staff - very friendly and helpful, the location- perfect and central, the price - okay. The minuses: the property needs a lot of attention. The lobby was apparently remodeled, but the cushions in the lobby were filthy. The only rooms with a window are those in front, so bring earplugs as the stores in the surrounding area get very early deliveries. Smalls changes such as HEAVY DUTY CLEANING of floors, tile, windows, and walls could make a big difference. I was in 3 rooms and all of them had water stains and mold on the ceiling and doors. The offending 'poly' tiles on the bathroom ceilings looked easy enough to replace. The last room on the third floor had a curtain that was half off half on and had apparently been that way for some time. If you stay here, get a front room, bring earplugs, and check several rooms to find the best maintained one available.

“no hot water for showers”

The hotel is run down, no hot water for showers, no window in room. Beds are comfortable, rooms are small. No bath tub, only shower. No parking for car. We were told not to drink the tap water. Lobby was hot, room had AC. I would not stay there again unless I was using it as a night before a cruise. We stayed there for 3 days, not again.

Hotels near airport are nicer and drive to Old San Juan is better tan staying there.

“Hotel Nightmare”

Hotel is rundown and in very poor condition. We had rooms on the 3rd floor. When we arrived we were informed that the elevator had not been working for several days. We had to carry all of our luggage up 6 flights of very narrow steps to reach our room. They did not provide any assistance. They advertised complimentary coffee and while there was a coffee maker in the room there was no coffee. We asked for some but we were told that their coffee service had not delivered for the past week. The A/C was not working in one of our 2 rooms. We tried to call the front desk but the phones were out of order. The corridors and area outside of the rooms was not air conditioned - hot and humid. We tried to get breakfast at the onsite cafe but we were told that the chef was out drinking the night before and that he was sleeping it off in his car right in front of the hotel. We could see him sleeping in his car from the lobby. One positive note: the front desk staff was very friendly and they did allow us to leave our luggage secured while we took a tour around old SJ before we left for our cruise. They did not, however, offer any concessions or discounts for the inconveniences or lack of basic hotel amenities. We would only stay there again if we knew for sure that the elevator was working and that we could depend on it. I am surprised that Howard Johnson's would put their name on place that was not much more than a "flop house".

Area recommendations
Staying in Old San Juan is convenient and full of old world charm. I would look for a hotel that is in better shape and can at least provide the most basic necessities - such as a working elevator.

“Lacking maintenance”

Great location in the heart of Old San Juan, nice style of the hotel. However, phone service was down in all the hotel during my stay, and services such as first floor restrooms and the elevator were also out. Expedia should ask merchants to post updates about the weekly status of their installations. i.e. what is out of order? What is not working?

“Claustrophobic”

The staff was great but this hotel has had its better days. To start your experience, you and your luggage are put into an elevator which was installed in the 1920 to 1930's. The elevator is half normal size with a plastic drawn door that broke the next day and if you have a fear of small spaces do not get in as it is nerve racking. The other 2 couples we stay with 1 couple had to change rooms as the A/C did not work. Wife could not shave her legs as the shower was too small and the sink would not drain. All 6 of us complained about the actual mattress cover coming off multiple times during the night. Please look at another place in the same area as the location is great for shopping, food and close to forts.

“Not the typical resort but full of charm!!”

I LOVED this hotel. Now, if you are looking for all the comforts of a resort, this is NOT for you. However, it has everything you need. Traveling to Viejo San Juan, this hotel served it's purpose. It was walking distance to EVERYTHING, I had an amazing view from my balcony and the hotel staff was the BEST! So friendly and helpful! I traveled alone so I always look for safety and I definitely felt safe here. The ONLY thing I have to complain about but was the lack of water pressure, but besides that, I LOVED IT!

Area recommendations
Viejo (Old) San Juan is the only area I really became familiar with, but I LOVED it! The forts are beautiful, the various restaurants are great and delicious, nightclubs are right around the corner, and the view of the beautiful ocean is amazing! The people are the BEST! The beach ins' too far. Walking distance, if you don't mind walking, but a short cab ride if you so prefer.

“worst hotel i have ever stayed in. they don't care about fixing anything wrong.”

When I first checked in I discovered that the phone was disconnected and did not work. I was required to allow them to put a hold on a portion of my checking account, yet they have no working phone. They came up to room and saw this, but never fixed it during the 4 days I was there. 3 nights and 4 days. 2. Hair dryer never worked. I am an engineer and pointed this out in writing. never addressed. 3. Towels changed out and bed made up, but room was not cleaned daily. 4. they advertise breakfast buffet daily and show this in their book in the room, but it does not exist. 5. Wireless room very hot and you almost feel claustiphobia as it is uncomfortable to be in this room. no wireless in rooms. 6. TV channels are not correct, do not match card in room and there is no CNN or any news channel as advertised in room. 7. soap (liquid) dispenser in room, but no soap. there was bar soap and dispenser in shower, but why put a dispenser if you are not going to fill it. 8. A/C was up very high and set at energy saving setting. it never got cool except very late at night, and the bathroom was always hot and stuffy. 9. Elevator was very old, extremely slow and probably would not carry but one person, but since this is a very old hotel, it sort of matches the decor. i used the stairs daily. 10. did not replace coffee used on 2nd day or give me new package with creamer, etc. I would never recommend this hote.. the other howard johnson in new san juan looks very nice.

Area recommendations
i love the city of old san juan and would recommend they visit it. Puerto lRico is a beautiful place and I plan to make many trips there as we are planning to do much business there.
