I was visiting Prague for a conference and a couple of days for sightseeing, and I chose the Karlin because it was outside the now uber-touristy Old Town area and in a more residential neighborhood with bars and restaurants. If you are looking for an alternative to the Doubletree, Clarion, Hilton, or Ramada, this is probably not the place for you. If you are looking for a quiet, very clean and comfortable room (with balcony) that you can use as a base for day trips, this would suit you. The hotel is great as a base from which to get around Prague and beyond- avoid the taxis/ tours and use public transport (Metro, tram), which is cheap, fast and efficient, and right near the hotel. The breakfast buffet will set you up for a day of sightseeing and walking (eggs, cold meat/cheese, fruit, bread, yoghurt etc). Wifi service is excellent, and the staff very nice. Want a quieter night? The local bars and restaurants offer food, wine and beer at very reasonable prices. Forgot toothpaste. shampoo or some other product? There is a toiletries shop next to the hotel. Want to pick up food for a picnic? There is a supermarket (Billa) down the street, and they have wonderful bread! Unless you are having serious Frapuccino withdrawal syndrome, I'd recommend bypassing the local Starbucks and going straight to one of the many nearby lovely coffee shops, and sample the cakes and pastries with a little coffee. Just remember to bring comfortable walking shoes (lots of cobblestone streets)!.
