Overall a very good hostel - certainly some of the best showers I've have had in a hostel. Bathroom a bit of a walk from the dormitory (across the stairwell and past the kitchen). Good location - not that noisy (if you close the windows) seeing as it's located right next to university and was at the start of the new academic year. Great time - would certainly stay again if I went back to Coimbra
The front desk staff were a bit stiff, but helpful with whatever you asked of them. The breakfast room lady was the real sweetheart, always smiling. Architecturally and historically, it is a really interesting place. There is so much of it that has survived from the days when staying at a swank hotel was a signifier of social standing - and therein lies its charm.
This was one of the most enjoyabkle experiences I've ever had. I've stayed at 5 star hotels all over Europe and the US from NYC to San Francisco and this was the most delightful of all my travels. The service was outstanding and I had the best Sea Bass I ever tasted, and that includes the top resteraunts in NYC. The wines were delicious and inexpensive. I will be back within a year and I shared my experiences wirh all my co-workers. A most delightful experience to say the least.
My wife and I stayed for a few days whilst visiting relatives in Tavira and really enjoyed the hotel's location. It is close enough to the town to be convenient by car, yet far enough out of town to be a somewhat quieter and more relaxing environment.
If you need the internet, the wifi is free in reception and the reception staff can supply a code to access it. If you purchase a coupon for internet access in the room, be sure to check the validity carefully though as the "24 hour" access passes they gave me varied between 5 to 63 hours validity in reality when I checked the expiration time and date printed on them.
Be aware as well, if you have any valuables you'd like to secure in the room, although the hotel supply a small safe in the wardrobe you have to rent the lock and key from reception.
Although the staff are really very friendly and pleasant, they are often overwhelmed by guests and it can be quite an exercise in patience whilst waiting if you need anything.
The meals were very nice and breakfast was very pleasant indeed. The only thing which I would have liked is if the egg station could cook more than just pancakes - I really fancied the idea of an omelette in the morning and this was not possible.
Overall though, a lovely place to relax and to base yourself while exploring the local area.
