This was our first visit to the area. We stayed for two nights. The front desk is a 50-yard walk from the valet and the elevators are another 50-yards beyond that. Not sure I fully understand the design or need for a promenade walk the length of a football field, but we found it completely inconvenient. Check in was great, smooth and simple. Staff asked about our plans during the process and offered recommendations. Very knowledgeable about area, dining and attractions. Hotel was very busy - couple of weddings and a reunion when we arrived. They did not miss a step with service. Kudos to them for that because the place was packed. Overall it was a good experience despite a fail in my opinion on the layout of the main floor. Other areas are addressed below.
We were a late arrival, but proprietor Dawn made us feel right at home and pampered us! A candlelit patio, hot tub with beverages of our choice (in a frosty glass no less), beautiful plants and art thoughtfully placed....all we had to do was relax and be refreshed at the Mermaid's Porch. Did I mention the freshly baked cookies and the cozy bed, beautiful room decor, fluffy robes & other special touches in the bath? What a delight....and then there was breakfast - any kind of juice & fresh, bountiful plates, lovingly prepared. You can walk right out the pretty red front door into the charming historic district, just a few blocks from an amazing waterfront walk - paved, and with historical markers. You will not be disappointed - just book it!
The staff was friendly and helpful, and the room was clean, but worn (burn holes in bedspread, scuff marks on walls and doors, broken drawers in dressers, etc.) In a rough neighborhood, but staff do an excellent job keeping the facility/ parking lot safe. Another nearby hotel was much scarier on a recent stay. Breakfast buffet was goof for the price (danish, muffins, yogurt, waffles). Not a bad choice if you need to be right in Posrtmouth.
I stayed here for a night while attending a concert. It was within walking distance. The hotel is located in Old Towne near some decent bars. The hotel is dated. The room was clean but could use updating. There was a rip in the desk chair, some left over "substance" on the desk and a couple non-working lamps. The place was OK for the night but not for a long stay.
Shipbuilding provided the impetus for the creation of Portsmouth in the mid-17th century, and still remains an important part of the city. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard here builds and maintains the US Navy fleet. The Naval Shipyard Museum is located here too. Olde Towne Portsmouth provides shopping, dining, and activities along the Elizabeth River near Portsmouth’s historic center.
